hello people, do you know if the track "original sketchbook" was superman first entire arc? that would make some sense since other cues appear to have elements developed from it. also, any chance you guys know similar tracks in other scores?

The Sketchbook is indeed the original idea, the final version being actually called "New Superman v57" (it got edited for the OST release, but in fact the 4 minutes missing at the end of it are just the track "This Is Clark Kent", making the demo run 32 min). You pretty much have got everything in the demo, Superman, Clark Kent, Lois, Krypton...
Then, usually, Hans & his team will have a go and develop other demos based on this material. The "Earth" suite was done by Mazzaro, where he "guitar-ized" Clark's theme. Junkie basically took a part of the Krypton material of the suite and would develop "Zod & his gang / World Engine" ideas. The most interesting and unfortunately not released in any form is Atli's "Superman Theme v5.8", which develops Hans' Superman theme in a "punchy" version & really gave life to Lois theme in what would become in film the epic --Superman Saves Lois-- idea used in "Escape From Ship" & "Faora Attacks"...

“Superman Theme v5.8” Wow, that sounds amazing! I always wondered if that string theme was initially meant to represent Lois or that was just some decision by the editors.
Hybrid Soldier
2018-08-01 15:46:25
I honestly doubt it was meant to be Lois' theme in the first place. It's in the "New Superman" theme, but really as a sub thing.
Atli made it big & epic, and I guess indeed they (Hans, editors, whatever) decided "oh it sounds good for that rescue !" and de facto it became Lois' theme. I wonder if all of this was decided at the last minute, because none of the cues with the "Lois theme" appear in the soundtrack.
And that theme basically vanished in Bat V Sup, for some reason I don't know...
mpolonest123
2018-08-01 16:38:56
That’s possible, especially if the “Escape From Ship” cue was actually a last minute piece.
However, the theme actually makes a mini cameo in BvS, at the tail end of the “Falling” cue right when Supes flies up to face Lex Luthor. It sounds heavily temped from “Alien Ship Arrives”.

thanks, this makes me very happy Hybrid : ) i will be looking for similar tracks.
when i took HZ's masterclass he said something like developing an "arc". and composing like writing a "diary". but then in other interviews he said sometimes you want to write music as the film is being worked on. or even sometimes you don't get to know what is going on in the movie. so let's say there are various techniques. (this one would be a favorite)
And THIS is why I love Zimmer. His little attention to details. If you listen to “This Is Clark Kent”, at 1:14 and 1:59 he inserts the Krypton motif subtly into Clark’s theme(s), suggesting that little bit of alien that’s there.
I hope Danny Elfman understand that Zimmer's Theme for Superman (AKA What Are You Going to Do When You Are Not Saving The World?) is and will be the musical personification of THIS Superman. I love John William's Superman but the two themes are great, each one in his universe.
It's a fantastic melody (Zimmer's Theme) that always inspire me hope and joy, and not sadness like many people affirm.
Would be the best option ti resurrect Superman in Justice League.

True, but as we saw, Zach Snyder had no idea how to handle that theme at all. After building up to it in MoS, he completely backtracked in BVS and only used it in that "Day of the Dead" variation (and even then that was just a dark variation on the theme). I was hoping Whedon would let Elfman give it a heroic spin again, but who knows at this point.

No Hans told me he wanted to use it but just could never find a scene in Bat v Sup where he could actually do it...
mpolonest123
2017-10-02 18:27:59
And THAT'S one of the biggest issues with that film. Instead of allowing a nice balance of darkness (Batman) and hope (Superman) you instead end up with a depressing mix of darkness. And the music reflected that, there were hardly any moments that would compare with "Flight" or "What Are You Going to Do". It was definitely an issue on Snyders part, not Hans...
Mortifer V.
2017-10-03 04:01:04
There's no issue in having a "depressing mix of darkness".
Hybrid, you might be able to clear this up. The main tune from Arcade: did Hans or JXL do that? Cause JXL said in a "Studio Time" Batman v Superman video that Hans asked him to come up with a rhythmic device for MOS, and what he came up with was the rhythm from Arcade....but that started as a Hans tune, if my understanding is right.
So did Hans do the main Arcade tune, then JXL used that tune as a rhythm, or did JXL come up with the rhythm, and then Hans wrote a tune over that?
Max Potcats
2017-05-09 10:26:18
I watched the last Studio Time too, and I understand that Hans make the "orchestral part" and ask JXL to make the rhythm with the drum orchestra after. But yes, I hope that Hybrid can clarify that too ;-)
So hearing JunkieXL's scores recently, this has really made me wonder...did Zimmer *really* work on the Arcade and Zod theme suites, or are they really all Junkie and Zimmer's name is a nice formality? Because they don't sound especially Zimmerish *anyway,* yet they sound identical to JunkieXL's recent output. ;)

Junkie did some drum programming on MoS as far as I know. Given his top credit on Dawn of Justice it would be no surprise if he was involved a lot in the first one.

Choosing the sound palette, mostly... What samples, instruments to use, what could fit the movie...

I love how you can spend months tinkering with the sound palette and what comes out at the end still sounds like synth demos...that's amazing.
Well, Tom (Junkie XL) tweeted that he is composing the trailer music with Hans for the Batman v Superman trailer coming with Mad Max: Fury Road. I am going to be honest, I am extremely excited about seeing and now HEARING the trailer! I think Man of Steel gets a great deal of undeserved flack. I personally found it an excellent score both inside and outside of the film. But anyway, enough of my thoughts. Curious to hear about all of yours in anticipation of the trailer!
Watched it on my new home theatre system... my God, Zimmer didn't lie, the surround mix of the music is astonishing. Drums everywhere in the room. Great experience!
Hey Hybrid Soldier, do you know where in the film the Marco Beltrami cue "The Long Walk" from The Hurt Locker can be heard? I really want to know this cause I cannot seem to find it anywhere! Thanks :)

mpolonest123
2014-12-05 20:53:17
Yeah that is a shame, probably some last minute cues after the album was pressed.
It reminds me a bit of the OSCORP theme in Spidey 2 or the "nature out of balance" motif in The Lone Ranger, not really heavily featured on album.
Mike
2014-12-05 21:41:02
Speaking of the Sketchbook suite, Hybrid, do you know what the 7 minutes of it cut from the album are (you said the original was 35 minutes)?
Man of Steel for me is one of Hans Zimmer's best works...From look to the Stars, to This is Clark Kent, to Ideal Hope and of course Arcade...all i can say is wow! I have no patience with internet nitpickers who have not composed a cellphone ringtone but are now experts at criticizing a legend in our time. Currently enjoying the interstellar soundtrack...Could you please bring that organ to some of Superman. Especially the sounds on STAY, had a superman heroic feel. Keep up the good work!
Hans Zimmer revealed in an interview with Comic Book Resource that he will be collaborating with Junkie XL on Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. The composer mentioned that Junkie XL aka Tom Holkenborg will be providing music for the Batman character, while he will take care of Clark Kent/Superman. Zimmer previously scored Snyder’s Man of Steel. Junkie XL composed additional music for Man of Steel and also worked with Snyder on 300: Rise of an Empire. Zimmer had previously expressed hesitation to score another Batman movie when he was first asked about the project given his involvement with Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight trilogy. Batman v Superman starring Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck, Gal Gadot, Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne, Diane Lane, Jesse Eisenberg, Jeremy Irons and Holly Hunter is set to be released on March 25, 2016 by Warner Bros. Pictures.

If Zimmer will make Superman his focus here, he BETTER make sure to develop his theme a good deal! It'll be so disappointing if we just get rehashes of MOS material once the score is done. Please, Mr. Zimmer, really make the Superman stuff count.

2014-11-11 01:46:06
The Music from Man of Steel was fantastic, so I have full faith in Zimmer continuing to expand the sound, music & feel he started with that wonderful score. Junkie XL did a fantastic job with DIVERGENT too, so I have no worries that he will create a great new Batman theme, music & sound for the new Batman.
the best theme of Man of Steel for me is General Zod theme. what do you think ?
it always remind me how music can bring out a character. just like Hans Zimmer did for The Joker.
every time i listen to General Zod's theme only one quote comes to mind "I was bred to be a warrior, Kal. Trained my entire life to master my senses. Where did you train? ON A FARM?"
I really like this idea. From what I've heard from Junkie XL, I've really enjoyed. I'm just hoping it's something very iconic, it may not last forever as one of the great themes, but as long as the theme is very easily identifiable. I'm on board.

Oh Crap...
I actually like some of Junkie's music, but for him to handle Batman...we'll see
Mike
2014-11-04 01:34:05
Ah, my original idea (that Zimmer would have someone else work on Batman) was correct! As for it being JunkieXL, judging by his contributions to MOS, I find this news to be....somewhat disappointing. Still, looks like this series will have a "tradition" of JunkieXL having a heavy role (since he did a lot of the Zod stuff here in MOS, and will do Batman's music in the next one).
I wonder, is Zimmer eventually planning to hand this series to JunkieXL, so that he doesn't need to be tied down with Justice League films? :P
It's batman god damn it, he can score john maclane or godzilla i dont care but batman has to have a theme. Hire Newton howard of James Horner instead please.
Ds
2014-11-03 21:42:35
And what exactly makes you think Junkie XL is not going to write a theme for Batman?
pardon my ignorance but looking through all this comments, i just have one question. what is a "cue" ? i can't find any good definition for what it is. is that how you guys call a track on a score ?
thanks.
Hybrid Soldier
2014-11-02 15:06:54
It is a track... Most people wrongfully call them "songs"...
I hope Zimmer does another long "sketchbook" suite for Batman v. Superman! It's really cool to hear all those demo ideas.
Lambegue
2014-10-30 20:28:37
There are more and more suites on Zimmer "big" releases lately : TASM2 had two of them on the special edition, for example. So I suppose your hopes have a fairly good chance to be fulfilled.

Yeah too bad I've got the midi files to compare the two, they are both based on the same material. Just like the "Water"/"H2O" theme from angels and demons is just a reworked version of "Malleus Maleficarum".
