I was honored, back in 2006, to meet both Nick Glennie-Smith and Harry Gregson-Williams.<br><br>I talked with both about The Rock, and here's what they told.<br><br>Nick & Hans worked very closely on most of their cues. That's why it's so hard to notice any difference between their own styles (and why they share most of the credits).<br>Harry worked separately from Nick & Hans. He remembered working on the San Francisco Chase (though we know Don Harper helped at some point in the process), and on "a lot of the action material from the second half of the movie, once the heroes reach Alcatraz".<br>The credits here tend to prove they were right.<br><br>All the Opening Titles / SEAL Attack is a bit complicated. Hans might have written the theme, but it also might be arranged for pictures by Nick Glennie-Smith (plus there's a lot more going on in these tracks than the man theme alone). So, well, I guess the final result still is a collaborative effort.A brilliant score, no matter what some people might say. Some of the darkest and most beautiful themes by Hans Zimmer were born here, as well as a lot of very exciting and propulsive electronic techniques. <br>Heck, I even like the movie! The score fits like a glove.<br>It helps that I'm a huge Tony Scott fan though.<br><br>Zimmer would even 'steal' from this score quite a bit in some of his later films. The 'Wayne Manor Suite' from TDKR comes to mind, as well as one of the Blade Runner 2049 themes being strangely similar to The Fan's 'Opening Titles' theme, and I'm sure there are other examples.<br><br>I would love for a complete version to be officially released sometime. It's very unlikely, but one can dream...Listen to the first demo at NGS demos album of "The Rock". The opening and SEAL Attack have a few notes from original NGS theme. That's why NGS is credited to it.I remember hearing something about NGS not wanting his name in the opening credits since it was a Hans cue playing. So yeah. I think the opening is really just Zimmer and the NGS credit is a formality since it was supposed to be Nick’s score.I'm sorry, disregard EVERYTHING I just wrote...The credit on "SEAL Attack" is HZ/NGS/Stern, not HZ/HGW/Stern. Not sure how I missed that. *facepalm*
OK, so a thought...<br><br>"Opening" and "SEAL Attack" are functionally identical; Hybrid says that Hans originally wrote it for the latter scene and it was then placed over the main titles of the film. However, the former is credited to Hans and NGS, the latter to Hans, HGW and Steven Stern. Presumably, since HGW/Stern aren't credited on "Opening", their contribution to "SEAL Attack" is limited to that first minute, which does indeed have a lot of HGW-ish percussion work to my ears. That leaves the rest of "SEAL Attack" as Hans' work alone, which begs the question: why the heck is NGS credited for "Opening", then, since it's basically identical? Screw it, I'm labeling that a solo Hans cue. Always bugged me that there wasn't at least one on this score. :pHi dear hans , i'm farzin a film composer from iran , i composed many films & tv series in my country also winning some awards and some of them are in IMDB , but music comunity is verry small here and i think i'm wasting my time & music here , its pleasure to be your assistant or working with you or anything you think i can be useful (sorry my english language is not good). please please just listen to one track of my music (i will send some for you if you reply me with email) and if it was qualified email me and let me know , also i have to travel to california this December cause my family lives there. i'm always thankful hans for your help & attention. Cheers mateI agree. Great score. This is "Hans Zimmer Dark Minimalism" done absolutely right. And the Oscorp stuff has to be temp. It goes up and down in just the right places.Forgot Macrotus, so the numbering messed up on 5-8 lol... Macrotus = Father to the Rescue + Hide in the Dark + Courthouse Pt. 1... Just want to give this score (and film) some major props. It seems like Ron Howard is one of those great directors who brings the best out of the composers he works with. It’s also interesting hearing just how much Lorne Balfe’s voice really comes through here.<br><br>Also, I wonder if it’s a coincidence just how much the OSCORP tune from TASM2 sounds like “Watergate Montage” (or did Marc Webb like a temp lol)Yeah, that theme starting at 1:35 is totally Black Rain! I love it though. So is nobody going to point out that Hans just casually slipped a theme from Black Rain into the middle of "Millennium Theme"...like, note for note? :pI hope there will be an album for Angel Has Fallen by David Buckley.PM me on YouTube for further questions.

Now here's something interesting. Amazon has not only a Limited Deluxe Edition listed now (for $17.99), but also simply the "Original Motion Picture Soundtrack" (for $11.88). BOTH editions are labelled as having 2 CDs. So I wonder, what will the deluxe version have that the regular version doesn't? Probably extra/expanded tracks like The Hobbit.

Either way, I'm extremely happy WaterTower Music is using what they did with The Hobbit as their example in releasing this score. Maybe if this score sells well, they'll release more scores like this. So, fellow Zimmer nerds, let's support them when the time comes. :P

Aragorn2013-04-22 10:50:44
lol, wouldn't it be a shame if it turned out that the only reason the deluxe edition was deluxe was because it had like 6 remixes not on the normal version? XD

Mike2013-04-22 10:53:42
HAHA, well, you know, Aragorn, it can't be as bad as On Stranger Tides. 7 remixes. O_o

I bet we'll find some extra tracks not present on the original version, extended versions of a few others, and maybe a remix for the heck of it. I doubt the album will be too full of remixes...*Gary Oldman voice* But I've been wrong before...

Edmund Meinerts2013-04-22 12:00:19
As long as they don't do what they did on The Hobbit and make it so that you have to get both versions in order to have all the music...

Ds2013-04-22 12:05:06
I think there'll be at least one remix by Junkie XL because he worked on Man of Steel. The TDKR one was useless but not crappy.

Hybrid Soldier2013-04-22 19:10:57
Junkie XL conducted the drum section.

But yeah, he might as well have done a remix... LOL

Ds2013-04-22 19:52:58
Is your "LOL" some kind of sarcasm?

After the release of TDKR, Hans Zimmer said in an interview that the Junkie XL remix included in the album was "legitimate", since the man actually worked on the score.

So who knows, maybe Hans will again let him do a remix of MoS and include it in the score album.

Mike2013-04-22 20:52:34
@Hybrid, you say, "But yeah, he might as well have done a remix... LOL". Are you saying the drum section will sound like one? O_o

Hybrid Soldier2013-04-22 21:32:06
No no... I just meant that as he worked on the score, well maybe he did one like TDKR...

But looks he also worked on Madagascar 3 only on the score... :)

Johnson2013-04-24 17:59:11
Why does that trailer track remind me of his Pearl Harbor score?

The piano? The high pitch synth instead of his lower pitch synth?

Pearl Harbor it is...

JamesT2013-04-25 05:04:02
I love the clip -- especially the movement from the major to the minor. Very heroic. And, I thought his comments, in the most recent article about the score, highlight ideologies in scoring around the obvious central character in The Bible and the one in Superman. If what's in the trailer is the theme, bravo Hans! Very excited about the seeing the film and appreciating an expanded score release.

Is this track really titled "An Ideal of Hope"?

Mike2013-04-22 10:58:11
Regardless of what it's called though, I find myself liking it more and more as I listen to it. I wonder if this score, years from now, will be seen as superior--or at least on par with--John Williams' work.

Does anyone know what the music in the second trailer (NOT THE THIRD) was from?

Mike2013-04-22 10:47:05
The first part is "Elegy" by Lisa Gerrard and Patrick Cassidy from the album "Immortal Memory". The second piece is "Storm" by Craig Armstrong and A.R. Rahman from "Elizabeth: The Golden Age".

Johnson2013-04-18 19:00:55
Based on what I've heard, Zimmer keeps the same key as Williams' theme in that cue, and even the tempo matches up slightly so it doesn't sound all that foreign to the Williams' theme fan.

I think it sounds good but if you ask me, had that piece been for some other movie, I honestly wouldn't be able to tell the difference between it and any other piece of Zimmer's music....

I hope he does similar justice to Lone Ranger...

julien reply Replies: 8 || 2013-04-17 21:41:05

The more I hear it, the more it grows on me. I was unmoved by it at first.

Anonymous2013-04-17 23:59:15
So how many people are forgetting about The Lone Ranger score?

Mike2013-04-18 00:01:57
lol...This guy. I can't help but wonder if TLR will be...let's say, not given as much of Hans' investment as this film. After all, wasn't he added to TLR pretty late? Still, I'm interested in the score.

Edmund Meinerts2013-04-18 00:06:53
I think I'm actually looking forward to Lone Ranger more than Man of Steel, oddly. Hopefully that one will be a return to the fun Hans Zimmer of Pirates of the Caribbean (1-3) and the (first) Sherlock Holmes score; Man of Steel I can see sounding more like the overly-brooding taking-things-too-seriously Zimmer of the Nolan films. Both sounds have their place, of course, but personally I prefer the more fun side. Unless he's ruining it like in the latest instalments of the two aforementioned franchises...

Mike2013-04-18 00:18:15
I, for one, am worried that this album will have BB's and TDKR's problem of not including the best music. For example, in Batman Begins, I really liked the Backup and Train Fight parts, as well as the end credits, yet they were nowhere on the album. In TDKR, they released a lot of the music which had already been used for the previous movies, when they could have released more new stuff, or more of Zimmer's suites or something.

So, here's to hoping this gets a good album release.

Guitwo2013-04-18 12:10:56
edmund:
i don't think it'll be too serious like TDKR. You can hear that it's a little bit more soft. You can listen hope. when you listen at Nolan's trilogy it's dark. You can almost feel the toughness of the character through the soundtrack.

Anonymous reply Replies: 1 || 2013-04-18 04:04:14
It's almost unfair to make Hans Zimmer score Man of Steel. I mean, look at the situation: John Williams is considered (by many) to be the greatest composer ever. Hans Zimmer is considered (by many) to be the greatest composer ever. And John Williams wrote a Superman theme. Now Zimmer has to make one. The comparisons will be inevitable.

Guitwo2013-04-18 12:08:03
I always liked Williams' theme but nowadays it would inapproriate to stick to that theme.
I'm not saying the new superman theme is as good as willims' one (i haven't hear the original) but I think that Zimmer's theme will have, at least, the same impact on people.

I can't wait for a preview... Zimmer recently gave us a track from "Rush", it could be so great if he did the same for Man of Steel :)

I want to preface by saying I really am excited for this score. But I must say, I hope it gets a better release than TDKR did, where A) a lot of noteworthy music was missing and B) you didn't get all the tracks from one source.

No Lorne Balfe contribution? It's a miracle, or just a mistake?
