@Cercei<br>Hybrid can definitely answer that best. Richter’s score is used (alongside Balfe’s material) as well as some source pieces. If I remember correctly it’s a mish-mash of the two.I do know that piece, it’s very pretty. I’ll check out his other works, thanks for the recommendation. In terms of minimalism I really am into Brian Eno at the moment. His “Music For Airports” and “The Lovely Bones” are excellent if you like more introspective music.btw, you're saying Lorne recomposed and reworked the entire score. as i haven't seen the movie yet, did the producers end up with not using richters score for it at all and just used the score from Lorne?thanks for your information. but i actually don't understand why they have done that. i've heard now Lornes cues and Richters cues. all those cues from Lorne, they sound very similiar to that what Richter composed, but somehow with less melodies. And you really have to work hard to not use fewer melodies then Richter, as he's a minimalist at its best ^^ with that being said, i can't hear any groundbreaking differences from Lornes part, so what was their idea on hiring it and getting the same style of music, but in a more "light" version? :/i really admire Max Richters work, he isn't that new in this scene. his style is that repeating minimalism. maybe you've heard once the cue "on the nature of daylight" which was used a lot by many other movies. his last score which knocked me out was "Hostiles". such an emotional and intense score, you need to hear that, and probably see the movie as well (with Christian Bale). <br><br>
Really surprised at this album, I’ve never really heard anything from Max Richter but I really like what he ended up writing for this score. It surprisingly flows well for a stand alone listen. It’s funny that the producers wanted a different approach, I think Richter nailed it.<br><br>Balfe’s contribution is excellent as well, I particularly like that repeating chord progression (which is starting to become one of his trademarks considering how many times he has used it). It’s disappointing that they didn’t include more of his contribution though, since he apparently rewrote the entire score.Lorne said in his Twitter, the first album for His Dark Materials come 3rd November, no date, for the moment, for the second album. Was the producersi haven't understood the fact, that Lorne was involved in this. Can someone explain it for me? Was the director not satisfied with Richters music? Was the deadline too near? Or what was the reason why they have brought Lorne to this project?"The Wanderer", "Event Horizon", "You Have To Let Me Go" and "Tuesday (Voiceless)" = WOW WOW WOW!!!
Zanelli is no James Newton Howard, but he did a fantastic job with writing a large scale fantasy score. I’ll even say that, while I think the first Maleficent is stronger overall, I personally like the action writing better here. Also 2 little things I’ve noticed;<br><br>1. The new theme here sounds fairly similar to the Father/Son tune from KFP3<br>2. 2:20-3:30 sounds like it may have been temped from the finale of Fantastic Beasts. (Or maybe I’m just crazy lol)Great work of Zanelli, if is not as good like JNH's Maleficent, is a tremendous work, with a terrific writing and orchestrations, even the most tender parts are terrific. It’s definitely Balfe. I’ve seen the film for the second time two weeks ago so my memory is kind of hazy but luckily I decided to record the end credits for reference and I think it plays in Balfe’s section / variation of one of his themes played on a solo string instrument. <br><br>I think we got most of Richter cues as it was mainly his release. I feel that Lorne has moved on from this project - he didn’t even mention the release so an extended release of his material seems unlikely to happen :( <br><br>For those interested the credits suite plays as follows: <br><br><br>“A Trip To The Moon” (synth part)<br>“I Put All That Away”<br>Variation on the theme in “Underground Lake” at 0:14<br>Variation on the theme in “Trip To Neptune” 0-1:00<br>“To The Stars”Season 2 premieres in 2 weeks, if he was scoring he would be working on it at the moment. But yes no confirmation regarding his return or a new composer. No news regarding new composer might be a hint whether Djawadi is returning or not.I only listened to the first couple of cues so it is too early to form an opinion comparing it to JNH but I disagree the first half drags. Maybe because I love tender themes.
I suspect that the release was just what they had originally planned, with a couple of bonus tracks thrown in to appease Fox. They likely didn't put too much thought in what they added, since people who have spoken with Lorne said he wasn't aware of the release and was surprised Prayer wasn't on it. I'm just glad anything got released at all after everything that has gone before.<br><br>Regarding that theme you mentioned, is it one that sounded like the personal motif Ethan has in M:I Fallout? Because while I did initially assume that was Balfe too, it seems it was actually Richter. Haven't gotten to hear Lorne's parts yet, so who knows he if he also did a similar thing. It’s not included and I’m very confused. I think there’s a good amount of unused tracks or the way the score was used was so terrible that only few tracks were memorable to me. <br><br>There’s a theme that plays during two tragic moments - I thought it was “Prayer” but it isn’t. I think it’s by Lorne as it’s closer to the direction he took. <br><br>I wish they gave us more Balfe :(I know this is probably the wrong place for it but I'd love if Hnas would one day release a CD of just his demo sketches and suites. I find hearing the original intentions/ideas even when rough really fascinating.11.22.19Yeah lol one way or another... :P

Saw the film tonight. I really loved the score, and I see what certain reviewers meant when they called it "religious". The theme really is nice, especially in that final scene, the organ was really impressive in both its quieter and grander appearances, and the score really synched up well with the picture—I would say better than any Nolan movie so far.

Hybrid was right, though: there are a lot of pauses in the score. I'm looking forward to listening to this again once it's released, but I'm actually glad I heard it in context first. It makes it that much more meaningful for later listens.

Mike2014-11-09 04:39:32
Also, I really think most of the music will be here on the OST, seeing as it's 90 minutes long, seeing as there were a lot of scenes without music, and seeing as many of the cues were repeated throughout the score.

I saw Interstellar last night and honestly....some parts made me cry. The work of Zimmer perhaps comes from the deepest part of outer space. Amazing.
But I need to say that. Chris Nolan has failed this time on how and when use the score in the film. Even the pilot fails, it's more fantasy than sci-fi but the holes in the script are very significant and some times absurd.
But it is a really movie theather experience.
I need a worm-hole to go to Nov 18th and take listen the Zimmer work in all his fullness.

I heard The Thin Red Line somewhere in the film. I don't remember where though. But I liked it. It doesn't bother me when I can hear parts of one score in another. I like that, actually.

What's your point ?

Zimmer can't use an organ because it was done before ?

Then forbid any new music in films !

Zimson2014-11-08 21:46:52
Everyone wants to see a rip-off in everything Hans does. It turns out to be a disease. For the record just because Glass used an organ (synth?) doesn't mean that other composers aren't allowed to use it as well, dot.

Saw the movie last nite, had not seen that Hans Zimmer was the composer. A lot of the soundtrack - which I loved!! so much organ power! - sounded a lot like philip glass ...

Levin2014-11-07 20:32:02
I agree! There are several parts of the main theme that reminded me Koyaanisqatsi. Beside that Hans zimmer really did a great job on this score. I can't wait to hear the soundtrack album!

Ben2014-11-07 23:27:09
That's exactly what I thought when I heard "Day One". Probably because there is a lot of organ's arpeggio.

The score and film fit together perfectly. Even though I did not get to see the film in IMAX(not available where I live) it still blew me away. Chris and Hans should inspire other Directors and Composers to push harder for more films like this in the world we live in today.

Mortifer V.2014-11-07 16:25:42
Exactly! These kinds of movies are truly worth creating. This is one of the most beautiful movies I've ever seen. The score is simply stunning.

henri reply Replies: 1 || 2014-11-07 13:03:00
the mixing is really poor, the soundtrack is way too obtrusive. while there definitely are nice parts, most of the score sounds like zimmer gave some acid to his employees and afterwards forced them to improvise on organ pads.

Zimson2014-11-07 13:16:48
Interestingly, I had the exact opposite experience. Are you sure you were in the right cinema hall?

And when the father-daughter theme that developed its meaning throughout the movie kicks in at the end I couldn't help it but cry.

Mike2014-11-06 23:55:12
So how do you like the score compared to Zimmer's previous scores with Chris Nolan (like one comment asked below...lol)? I'm seeing the movie in two days.

Zimson 2014-11-07 00:15:36
I loved the score and I think it was a good decision to release the soundtrack after the movie. Now you really get the meaning of the music when you are listening to it. The score itself is compared to inception or dark knight at times rather low key but there are scenes where the music is really visible in the front, despite its unobtrusiveness. Of course there are those thrilling scenes where the music is big and bright but that's not the "heart of it".
However, trust me, it's unlike everything you've ever seen. So outside of the box.

Mike2014-11-07 00:26:45
I can't help but wonder whether this "release soundtrack after movie" thing will become a new trend (rather like the recent trend of really solid HZ soundtrack releases!). It would be a welcome one, in my opinion. :)

badbu2014-11-07 08:30:09

I hope to see the film on Saturday, and I must say, I'm as excited about the music as about the film itself!

Anonymous2014-11-05 23:02:00
i know it's probably unrealistic to expect a simple reply to this question, but do you like it better than Zimmer's (and Balfe's for Inception) previous Nolan efforts, Hybrid?

Hybrid Soldier2014-11-05 23:04:05
What to say... It starts with that same kind of Arvo Pärt thing that started The Thin Red Line... But that's the only resemblance I can find with TTRL...

It's very different from HZ... The piano reminds me of The Weather Man, and some cues weirdly reminded me of The House Of The Spirit, but that's pretty much it. It's hard to describe, a lot of organ everywhere & elegy... Need to rewatch it... lol

Hybrid Soldier2014-11-05 23:08:37
Well I don't like much comparisons, the scores can't be more different... This score is like Hans told me a year & a half ago, "very personal", you can feel it. Mazzaro & Kawczynski might have done some programming & arranging here & there but it's all Hans. Inception really had a lot Lorne. But comparing those scores is like, I don't know, comparing Star Wars & The Thin Rin Line, it just doesn't make much sense ! Both are great in very different ways...

Leo2014-11-05 23:51:56
Is the film itself worth watching, disregarding the score?
(I am just as excited for the score release as anyone on this site is, don't get me wrong)

Hybrid Soldier2014-11-06 00:05:47
Oh yeah I loved the film...

Ds2014-11-06 01:31:57

Ds2014-11-06 01:36:19

Ds2014-11-06 12:58:46
Hybrid, don't you think these additional tracks may be alternate versions? Because I really can't see a difference between "Cornfield Chase" and "Flying Drone", for instance.

badbu2014-11-06 13:11:18
Hybrid, do you think we get some clips about the recording?

Looks like this year Hans is going to get his over due second Academy Award. He should have got last year for Rush.

Ds2014-10-28 19:29:18
isildur, I certainly hope so but with these people from the Academy, you never know. Closer to the voting date they become highly predictable, but several months in advance anything can happen.

Plus, don't forget that some critics are still bashing the "overpower" of Zimmer's score, which is, according to them, "distracting" from the movie. To me, it's bullshit (a score by HZ is never too loud and will always be 100x better than any line of dialogue), but to them it may be a reason not to give him a much deserved 2nd Oscar. Also, maybe Interstellar will be completely snubbed at the Oscars, just like Rush last year...

Zimson2014-10-28 20:49:00
Lol, I wonder why anyone is still taking the Academy seriously. Hans should have kept boycotting the Oscars. Who needs recognition by a bunch of die-hard grandpas? Most likely Birdman or sth. like that is going to win Best Score.

You're right, it's been forever...

The good thing is that to help me wait for Interstellar, I'm listening heavily to TASM2, and I can know say it's an absolutely incredible score, even more than what I noticed earlier in the year.

theeaglesfan005 2014-11-03 22:04:04
Hans was a busy guy (this year)

Winter's Tale
Son of God
The Amazing Spider-Man 2
Interstellar

Hybrid Soldier2014-11-03 22:08:05
Mmmmh Son Of God not really it's just last year's Bible... And Winter's Tale he just wrote the main theme last year during one night... lol

Scorefan2014-11-03 22:17:06
So, Winter's Tale: Main Theme
Son Of God, just few themes.
The Amazing Spiderman 2: Just few themes
Interestellar: All the score, without additional composers

Hybrid Soldier2014-11-03 22:21:10
Strongly disagree about Spidey 2... There's a lot of him & a lot of the others in it... I guess it's hard to understand, but it's a band score you know... lol

Ds2014-11-03 22:31:02
I think Zimmer really delivered the last 2 years. I'm still blown away everytime I listen to Man Of Steel, incredibly excited when I listen to Rush, I feel insanely cool with The Amazing Spider-Man 2 basting through the speakers of my car. And I'm already 100% sure that Interstellar will be outstanding (I'm digging what's been revealed yet). Count also several parts of The Lone Ranger and Winter's Tale. Really, 2 great years.

I can't believe some people keep saying "Hans has lost it". No way.

2013 and 2014 have been, for me, something of a career revival for Hans. No, I wasn't exactly Man of Steel's biggest fan, but between Rush, Lone Ranger and Spidey 2 he's definitely on the up and up after a couple pretty weak years.

But there's another Special Release coming up later this year.

Don't know much about it.

so wait... the star projection set doesn't come out until December 18th?

I thought its release date was November 18th

Yeah... i just checked myplay's site for it

Release is December 18th... but you do get a digital MP3 copy of the soundtrack

Hopefully it's all 2+ hours of it and not just the 92 minute one you can get off iTunes

Wish it was a lossless download... but oh well

"but you do get a digital MP3 copy of the soundtrack"
when? 11/18/2014? that would be nice :-)

from the myplaydirect page

Hey Hybrid. Non relevant item to this soundtrack but you should add Jacob Shea - The World Wars OST to the site. Great soundtrack I just discovered on Spotify! Classis Zimmer sound!
