Yeah, I always thought that would be the case for the Academy Awards. Don't know about others but if it's not eligable for the Oscars I can't see Disney submitting it for consideration at any other awards either. Could be wrong - I have the vague notion BATB got an FYC despite being ineligable.<br><br>Best thing to hope for is either a leak of the 'sessions' or a future official expanded score release.John Powell composing the eternals would be a dream come true. It’d be so amazing. I also want Lorne to compose a super hero movie but he has yet to do one which is very odd considering how popular he isvery underrated score - you can't change my mindHenry Jackman seems to be composing Black Widow, it's great news. The bad thing is that Joseph Trapanese composes The Eternals, would have preferred Powell or has one of the Gregson Williams brothers (preferably Harry).Zimmer himself confirmed on Facebook that this score wouldn't be eligible.
What a beautiful score... The 'Opening Titles' is probably one of HG-W's best dramatic pieces. Very beautiful and haunting, and overall a great showcase of Harry's dramatic sensibilities. I remember reading somewhere that he's very proud of this score, and it's not hard to understand why if you listen to it.but the lion king is preexisting music that has previously won an Oscar. "S.T.A.Y." is so damn amazing! I was just testing it on my 5.1 system. How is it possible that you can put so much emotion into something so minimalistic? Even Arvo Pärt hasn't achieved this level yet. :P
Oh and of course, not to forget "Stay", I really feel the rocket launching and try to hold on the couch. :D This is really a score for big speakers.

I'm really dieing to know what soundtrack is played when he reads the 23 years massages right after coming back from "Miller's planet"

Is it "Running Out" or "No need to come back" I really think it's no need to come back but I don't remember who said while he was watching the massages, Hopefully someone can enlighten me. :D

Actually the first half of S.T.A.Y is a very, very similar cue and that first couple of minutes might as well be a repeated cue from that scene. It's basically an extended version of that cue you are thinking of.

btw to understand and appreciate the value of a soundtrack in a movie you have to judge the music as a part of the story/narration etc that's how you judge how good the music is. judge a score as a standalone album is pure nonesense. I've listened to TASM2= movie is sh** and the music does not bring anything to the movie...
that's why Hermann is still to this day one the greatest composer of all time. Music was a character and was a part of the drama.

Judging scores based on their albums is hardly nonsense. If it was, then there wouldn't be any albums and none of us would listen to film music at all. Judging a score based on how it works in the film is fine for a thesis or something, but when it comes to us fans, I find that judging the album is much more useful and relevant.

you are talking as a fan. I am a fan as well. I enjoy the album as well as a fan. but as an aspiring director and also as a film critic I cannot judge the music as a standalone because it's not meant to even exist as a standalone. Film music, at the beginning, was never meant to be commercial. no albums, no nothing. It was an actor of the movie.
well now we need to give our opinion. judging hans' last album like he is a rock/pop star is a none sense. I don't think hans pretend to be all that. his goal, like a director of photography, is to give life to a director's vision. it is part of a piece of art. that's film music.
But that's the problem I think. there is often a difference between the reality and the perception. I have been to a master class last year where hans was the guest and clearly, even tho the guy enjoys the success, he does not have the mind to think he could compose music on its own, without someone giving him a headline, a director feeding his imagination with pictures, stories, characters and all. because it's a very different job.
that's my take on film music, i cannot judge it as a standalone piece of art(except if it's, measure for measure, recording sessions directly from the movie) altho i enjoy listening film music.

Whatever happened to the Hans Zimmer who wrote such beautiful pieces like "Honor" for The Pacific mini series and the Gladiator soundtrack? Now those were wonderful works unlike the blaring, barely melodic, mostly dissonant experimental music of Interstallar.

Nolan presents Hans with a piece of paper, asks him to read it and write for a day, etc, etc. We have all read about the circumstance.....Hans writes for a day, Nolan listens, things connect, Interstellar is born. And, as we wrote, he literally knew nothing, at all.

How can u suggest he does not have the skill to compose something great without being told how to by someone? If you think he has never written music for a film without any basic context, you are clearly mistaken. Those circumstances have produced some of his best scores.

And, in terms of film music, who really can't cant judge the artistic characteristics of score separate from a film? One of my favorite examples is The Green Mile. You can't judge the quality of that score apart from the film? As an aspiring Director, you won't let other film music influence you own work?

I don't need to watch an artist paint something original before I decide to hang it on my wall and stare at it everyday in amazement.

and you can believe that? one letter and he came up with a complete score or at least most of the cues? haha. i think you have the wrong perception on how a music composer is working imo. this is just good story-telling and marketing to my ears and it's at the best partially true. i think the amount of time they spent talking about the music was huge. what's the movie about? who are the characters? themes? etc etc even if hans is crazy he is following the director's vision and it implies talking a lot, exchanging a lot of ideas etc. If a director a photography is blind, the music composer is deaf. how the movie sounds depends on the director. the goal for the director is to push the composer to believe that there is a music that makes sense in his universe.

He said he does not have what it takes to make music that is not for a movie because he needs something to work with. whether it's a letter, a script or really anything. that's the start and then they talk a lot. it's either not hans' desire or his way to work. he said people (fans mostly) often comes to him asking him if he will write a symphony one day or write music that is not part of a movie. he said he simply can't. it is not his job. he doesn't do that because he does not know how to do it. it's simple to understand imo. he is not thomas bergersen for example. with all due respect that i have for the work of TSFH, this is not the same job.
this is not nonsense, this is pure logic to me. a composer for films makes music for films.
did you really believe that chris nolan gave him a letter, take a quick feedback at the end of the day and then walk away saying hans "see you in 6months/a year".
give interstellar another director (like Steven Spielberg) and hans wouldn't have made the same music because the director do not have the same vision.

Guitwo, he didn't come up with a complete score, only with one piece of music, which is, I guess, the main theme. Nolan wanted his movie to be centered on a father-children relationship, hence this letter, leading to that soft, organic piece of music.

If Nolan had told Zimmer about a huge sci-fi movie, it would probably have influenced his initial approach.

I think the rest of the score was composed with full knowledge of the movie.

and from my perception, the father-child relation-ship while being obvious and dominant in the movie, interstellar is more a movie about human nature and what it is to be a human being (father/mother is a part of our species). what makes us human.

Hello, everyone. I would like to request something here. Before I do, I want to point out that I'm not a sensitive person and I am well aware this is the internet. I have noticed that we're using "IS" as the acronym/short version for Interstellar, much like TDK trilogy and TASM2. However, using "IS" only reminds me of ISIS - The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria. I hope no one is bothered by me requesting so, and I fully expect there to be backlash. But I figured I'd at least try. And can't we all do better than "IS"? Like maybe "INTS" or "INTR" or something. There's gotta be something good we can think of. Thanks :)

I find it interesting that if a person posts their opinion here that they don't care for a particular HZ score, they are demonized, chastised, are told that "nobody cares" and are ruled out as "irrelevant". Really? I'm a big HZ fan (or I wouldn't even be on this website) but I'm not a drone who just automatically loves everything that he writes... especially one that hasn't even been released yet (like IS). Most of this soundtrack is already on youtube. some of it seems mislabeled and some of the timings on the clips are different than the ones above, so its hard to tell. Detach seems to be the one, but again, hard to tell.

I wish they'd release this OST early so I could get the real deal!

The angst that this speculation is causing is amusing. I'm certain Imperfect Lock is the theme we are all looking for, perhaps edited down by a few minutes. By my recollection, there is a build up cue to the pivotal rotation scene that is repetitive. With 2+ hours of eventual score release, everything has to be there.

Just be patient for the initial release on the 18th. It will be there.

Hans Zimmer is a monster who needs to be stopped.
To quote a Dylan Thomas poem that Interstellar beats into the ground,Hans Zimmer isn’t the type to go gently into that good night. Like John Williams before him, a Zimmer score is another character in the movie, begging you to pay attention to the sheer profundity of the scene at the expense of actually hearing what’s going on. In his New Yorker review, David Denby agreed: “Delivered in rushed colloquial style, much of [the dialogue], central to the plot, is hard to understand, and some of it is hard to hear. The composer Hans Zimmer produces monstrous swells of organ music that occasionally smother the words like lava. The actors seem overmatched by the production.”
This was an issue in Inception, whose iconic gong-like interruptions had a way of drawing viewers out of the movie with their sheer volume. Like the most oppressive Transformers production, Interstellar is loud, and Zimmer doesn’t know when to turn it down, a problem that also plagued his deafening Pirates of the Caribbean scores. During a rocket launch into space, Zimmer’s organs pound even louder, leading audience members to clutch their ears in agony. Interstellar, thus, cements Nolan’s status as the thinking man’s Michael Bay.
If you must see Interstellar in theatres, my advice? Bring earplugs and keep them on for the rest of the movie. It’ll help.

Considering just how many people are complaining about this mixing issue, though, I don't think it should be dismissed that lightly. Sure, the film might sound better in a super ultra hi-fi hi-def 7.1 surround sound IMAX setup, but Nolan/the producers/Zimmer/sound mixers/whoever needs to acknowledge that the majority of people aren't going to see the movie in that environment, and adjust the sound mix accordingly. It's a legitimate criticism.

Keep in mind I haven't seen the movie yet, so this is all theoretical on my part. :p

I think the reviewer's biggest problem is that he simply does not like Zimmer's style. If you notice, most people who complain about the Interstellar score... were already complaining about the "loud" Inception score. These people do not like this kind of music, so of course they're not happy to hear it at full power in some scenes. Then they call it "deafening".

Hell, this reviewer even dismisses the Pirates scores, which contain some of the best material HZ and his team have ever composed.

I've also seen the movie 3 times in a few days, everytime in a different regular cinema, I had no problem at all. The sound and the mix was just good. If there's a blockbuster where Hans "turned it down", it's Interstellar. A lot of scenes have no music at all, and a lot of others have very quiet atmospheric music. But of course, when it needs to explode, it's a full blast, and it's so memorable that nobody could forget to mention the score when writing a review of this movie :p

Maybe some showings did have sound issues, and there's no doubt it's a loud film, but "leading audience members to clutch their ears in agony" is just another example of the stupid hyperbole that infects much of film 'criticism'. Unlike many movie-goers, I do think there is a place for critics, particularly in raising awareness of small gems that may get overlooked. What I don't have time for is director love-ins, shameless tag line generators and vapid commentary OR hyperbolic nonsense, forced put-downs and dismissive smugness passing off as "criticism". And particularly with Interstellar we've seen some deliberately provocative articles, designed solely to generate controversy and attract the ire of the most delusional Nolan fanatics. And sadly, the click-bait has worked a treat!

I like film critics who are insightful, critical (in the actual sense of the word), analytical, knowledgeable, fair-minded and entertaining without having to sort to cheap shots. Sadly, I would contend that the majority of critics don't fall into that character and are merely mediocre. The signal-to-noise ratio in the critic world is frightfully low.

Well, meandering organ music without much percussion doesn't really make for a great Hans Zimmer score - at least not on the popular side.

Most everybody wants Zimmer's next "video game music".....

I can see why they don't really like this score as much, seeing as it's as meandering as Thin Red Line. Both scores are great, but like I said, many people at the end of the day just want a good score to play Call of Duty with, or some such nonsense....

There seem to be a lot of trolling around here... Anyway, as there are a lot of arguments about personal tastes, wanted to to chime in (and thank Mr. Zimmer for brilliant work!:

I'm fairly sure that we all agree that Hollywood film music in general –though we love it and listen to it, otherwise why be here– is not usually know to be groundbreaking. Which it shouldn't be in the current studio system, as making big budget films is a risky endeavour and studios are trying to minimise their risks as they best can. Hence they tend to use a fairly limited number of trusted film composers, and on the other hand film composer have to have a high level of professionalism to always deliver. For proof you just need to look at what happened to the brilliant M83 on the Oblivion score (despite the production problems I think the end result is quite fantastic, though he didn't want the M83 name on it).

Personal tastes apart –which all this conversation has been, and there's no right or wrong answers in that kind of arguments– I love the fact that Zimmer has the guts to try something different in today´s studio environment, here in collaboration with Nolan. With the Batman, Man of Steel, Inception etc. soundtracks he created a recognisable, powerful style with that for me seemed something different from the typical embellished and lyrical Hollywood fare and seemed to fit the zeitgeist with it's darker, more somber tone. But as Nolan & Zimmer pointed out, that style seemed to be worn out and spreading to other movies.

With Interstellar Nolan clearly had ambitions beyond a mere Hollywood blockbuster, he was aiming for 2001esque level. To have a typical Hollywood soundtrack when you have more artistic ambitions would simply not work – you need to push the envelope on all fronts if you hope to create an end product of significance. 2001 had it's classic music, Interstellar has it's organs.

I can't be sure how much of it is a good story and how much of it really went down (people tend to embellish this kind of things later on), but I love the creation myth behind the Interstellar music. The end result with it's recurring but developing theme certainly sounds like it's based on a seed that was created in a day. Not having different themes for different characters seems a fresh choice and emphasises the human story at the heart of the movie during all the grandiose views. The music is used with skill to create contrasts between scenes (which is not a given on any Hollywood movie).

In coclusion: a tip hat, dying to get the soundtrack (on Spotify, I hope).

I didn't visit this page for quite a long time. Two days ago I watched Interstellar. You know, when I left the theatre after I watched Inception I was totally blown away and thankful for that special experience. But now, after I've experiened Interstellar, I found myself shocked. Various times I cried. Various times the people around me didn't get it due to the "complexity" of some scenes. I wish I could give you some examples but I don't want to spoil anything. Let's say they wouldn't ever understand the basic knowledge of Einstein's and Thorne's theories, which the movie explains to you anyway. Nevertheless, I was shocked. Why? Interstellar is Nolan's most emotional movie, in my opinion. The way Nolan plays with theories I mentioned is nothing else but awesome. I just say "ending"^^. I think about this movie most of the time and I will certainlay re-watch it. There are plot-theories that came into my mind and I want to figure out if my brain is bullshitting me. And of course there is this fear - did I get it? Did I understand it all? I think I have but there are a lot of things I missed for sure.

The score was...unexpected. I expected something different but this music was so different from Hans. The music nailed it. Nothing else to say. Hans nailed it. To be honest, I was disapointed by Man of Steel. I found the music annoying and distracting (at least in the action scenes). But as I mentioned. Hans did a perfect job.

If all you listened to is the film I could certainly see it that.

I've said it a few times, but I think in the film the music and sound all slushed together to the point that you couldn't tell whose theme was whose, what was going on etc.

But on the album, it's pretty clear what the intention is. I still think Man of Steel is a good album, and I enjoy listening to it and imagining an actually good film in my head, in the same way I listen to the star wars prequel scores.

I didn't have that problem with Interstellar, I could pretty clearly tell which themes were which.

I agree with Edmund, Filmtracks is a good site, but I wish he'd spend more time reviewing other good scores than complaining about Zimmer.

I mean don't get me wrong, the ostinato/bashing drums thing *has* infected mainstream action/drama scoring, but it's unfair to blame that on Zimmer. It's what producers want. And I don't buy this "death of film music" stuff. There's still plenty of great scores being produced if you're willing to look.

For example, last year, the score to Philomena, in my opinion, was the most clever and moving score of the year. How many people here have heard that? Did Clemmensen?

That's just factually untrue.

And "non-traditional" doesn't equate to 'good'. There's stuff which seems to get an easy pass because it's 'experimental' or 'different'. Steven Price's Gravity score for me, was an example of that. I don't want to beat up on the guy, he's a young (and clearly VERY talented) composer, but it did little to enhance my experience of the film (in fact at the end it actively detracted from it, because all I was thinking was that someone else could've written something better), and nothing for me on CD. Yet everyone loves it for some reason.

My problem with Clemmensen is that he holds Zimmer to a standard that he doesn't his derivatives. It's unfair to say Zimmer does the same old thing, he doesn't. Whether you like his music or not, it's completely untrue to suggest that Man of Steel, Rush, 12 years a slave, Spiderman 2 and Interstellar are all the same.

But in general he's a pretty fair reviewer, and even when I disagree, I usually see where he's coming from.

That's not true though. Study your theory, they're a bit more complex than that.

It's impossible to know how good the music is as a standalone until it comes out on CD. I'm not sure the degree to which I like it as just music, but I do know though that I found it very effective as a complement to the film. For example, I found the first half of the "Day One Dark" track incredibly captivating and frightening, but the organ bit a bit of bludgeon. However it worked really well in the film! So it did its job.

It stuck with me. I liked the way the main tune related back to the original fairground. Perhaps, I'm biased though, I loved the film and I loved the fact that a British/Irish indie film on a grim subject matter didn't just get the same old boring, bland, 'gritty', dark score, and actually attempted to address the character and her story, rather than just sit there and say "this film is really dark, y'know. Like, REALLY dark!"

I just saw this movie today. This next week, until the 18th, will be the longest week of my life.
Even though I've only seen the movie and heard the score once, I plan on experiencing it a lot more, and this is possibly my favorite Zimmer score.

It seems, based on the Interview with Chris Craker, that we won't have a complete score. "The selection of cues" meaning there are missing cues. I rewatched it this morning, too! It was even better than the first time around. Perfect movie. Perfect score. Can't wait to hear "Stay" again, it's hauting me now...

I wouldn't call the movie perfect, I don't think movies can be perfect, but for sure it's one hell of a ride... I see something like around 80 movies in theater every year, and for sure in 2014 it blasts everything else I've seen. It was since Rush I hadn't seen a film that blew me away and I so wanted to see again like immediatly...

For me it's also the best I've seen this year (out of 70 movies so far). It's funny because my number 1 movie of last year was Gravity (I saw it like 4 times in cinema), and this year it's Interstellar... I didn't know I was such a fan of space :p

I rewatched Gravity last week... And if the film is greatly done, good acting, great score, it's pretty much all... The rest, the writing & all is just empty like space itself... It's all about how it's done, and rewatching it was not really interesting to me...

Hybrid, as you may suspect I strongly disagree about Gravity. If you want to look at it in a "traditional" way, of course it may lack writing, or something people call a "plot". However I think it was meant to be lived as a sensorial experience, it's litterally 85min under the skin of an astronaut under extreme circumstances. Added to this, the direction, cinematography, visuals and sound-design/score were all top-notch. I had a blast everytime I saw it (4 times in the cinema, and then several times at home). Far more than I expect of any 85-minute movie :p

Honestly I think Im done with this movie. Like Gravity, it's one of those kinds of films you watch once and never again....

I watched it. It was a huge spectacle. I don't need to go back and revisit it....

Hans score, on the other hand, will have to wait and see...

I totally agree that Gravity is not about the plot, and for me also not about the acting. It's totally about the visuals and they way they are filmed, edited, mixed with the music/sound etc etc. I love it for that. The message is in the images so to speak.

But Interstellar, while the images are beautiful as well, has of course lots of plot. And it's what I'd expect from a Nolan movie: deep, socio-critical, embracing science and new ideas,... the Nolans have their own philosophy and they put it in their writing. I agree with the philosophy, so I love their films.

Finally saw the movie

Do Not Go Gentle could be from scene after the wormhole, but the time doesnt fit I think

First Step may just be the music for when they board the Endurance

otherwise I dont think much major is missing, mostly short cues before they go through the wormhole

I do hope that we get that very quiet slow theme as they pass Saturn

Have to agree with Edmund here. While it's indeed a terrific and very inventive and personal score, I think it's just too early to claim it is "the best score ever". The movie's been out for a few days, the soundtrack hasn't even been released... I mean, maybe it IS Zimmer's best score, but it's too early to know it. It's impossible to compare new music you've just experienced, to music you know by heart since you're a kid. You have to let it grow and see what you'll think of it in 1 or 6 months, or even several years later.

Like, the Amazing Spider-Man 2 soundtrack took me a good 6 months to fully appreciate. The first time around, I thought it was a fun little score, now I think it is simply brilliant and can't stop listening to it.

But you guys really have to pay attention to what you are saying. Best score ever? have you ever listened to all the score that has been released since the begining of the film industry?
Zimmer could record a score of him making noises with his fork in his plate you will still say its the best thing ever created in the whole universe.

I enjoyed the film a lot, it was great experience. I'm looking forward to seeing it again in a less crowded theatre. The bit where Cooper fell in was genuinely frightening and I don't often feel scared by films - but it was visceral. Great stuff.

I think the score was very *effective*, which is why it's being mentioned in a lot of the reviews, more-so than scores often are. It picked its moments well.

Ds, while it may have taken you a whopping 6 months to become attached to TASM2, it may not have taken that long for others. Everyone is different. Some people can develop an appreciation for something early on, some can comprehend things more than others. If someone says this is their favorite score, only they can know that. How can you say it's not? I do think it is still early, but there's no doubt this will be many a people's favorite score.

Sometimes it doesn't take long at all for a score to become a favorite. The Last Samurai I heard once when I saw the film, and even without having listened to it by itself yet, I felt pretty certain it was a favorite. Sometimes scores do take time to get used to (I didn't really like TASM2 when I first heard it; now I appreciate it a lot more), but in my experience, that's a rarity.

So, I had the pleasure of seeing this in IMAX, which required some effort on my part, since there is not an IMAX theater within three hours of where I live.

Ummm, WOW. What an experience -- I have never, lol. I have seen many films in that same theater, most recently The Equalizer, MOS, and others. I was awestruck by the visuals and the sound literally shook the seats and took my breath away at several points.

There's really no point to comment on the spectacular bond between the film and the score -- in my mind, this is personally the best example I have ever seen -- ever.

The transitions in the film created a lot of tension for me -- things moved fast, then everything got incredibly cerebral. So, I need to see it again, and will. At one point, I felt like I did after I watched The Sixth Sense -- the clues that were not obvious UNTIL they were obvious.

I walked away from the film looking for a personal characterization, something I could rationalize in my mind. It was overwhelming on many levels -- what I ultimately arrived at for me in a single word is COMPELLING, in the strongest sense.

I really don't think I have been moved and personally impacted this much by a score from Hans. I've read all the articles and the pretenses about the genesis of the score -- the score has a heart beat to it. And, in that respect, a comprehensive human element -- love, family, responsibility, desire, will, sacrifice, failure, imagination, etc. The score is every bit of all of these things.

I cannot congratulate Chris and Hans more for this ultimate work of art. Now, waiting for the initial score release and the deluxe one in December is painful enough! Cornfield Chase, Coward, STAY, Imperfect Lock.....

This score was different...Was it good? I can't really say...It was more Thin Red Line with a Pipe Organ than anything else....

Honestly I don't remember any themes at all. Surprised may of you caught them....

Finally saw the film!

A truly beautiful film, and a real Nolan. I know some people like it, some don't, but I think you either like Nolan's way of thinking and writing or you don't. I love him, and I remain a fan.

As for the music, I was so happy to find that the music from the very first trailer was actually what I'd call the "main theme". I thought we hadn't heard any music of HZ in the trailers, and I'm glad this one was actually his. I love it. Always have since the trailer came out :)

I think the way they mixed the music with the film is perfect. But I can't say much else about the music. It was not as much "right in your face" as with the other Nolan films, and apart from a few scenes, I really have no memory of the music to make any judgments. I can't wait to hear it on soundtrack, though!

In Nolan and Zimmer I trust.

I know the "credits" wars on here get stale, but I legitimately liked watching this movie and not having to wonder who wrote what. Knowing it was all Zimmer helped me enjoy it more deeply, weird or paranoid as it may sound.

As Hybrid has said, Steve Mazzaro and Andrew Kawczynski did some programming here and there, but they basically just copied suites onto the picture. And by Hybrid's comments it sounds like they did a few scenes, but by no mean all. So yes, it's 99% Zimmer. ;)
