It's nothing short of a masterpiece, a modern opera. The choir is beautiful, and the choice of gospel for the first track gives it a unique identity, though I'm not sure how well it meshes with the orchestra. It feels a bit off, but will hopefully improve for me on further listens. <br><br>The composition, has to me, elevated Powell to the status of the second best living composer (Williams is still first for now). It's pure orchestral beauty and mastery with variety of texture, color, and style, with seamless tonal transitions. The complexity rivals some of the great works of the past. <br><br>It's strange to me that this is called "choral works". Rogue One is a bit of an odd one. From what I'd heard, Desplat had joined on the condition he'd be allowed to do his own thing and not ape Williams. But once they decided to overhaul the film, they pressured him to go that exact direction. Things stayed still for a while (in which he still got paid) before he was finally let go very late into production. So the idea he sorta just left is interesting, so I'm curious to hear what that was about.<br><br>For BW, it seems very likely to me that Marvel simply were unsure about Alexandre's music, so I'm guessing they hired Balfe to do some demos and decided from there. Who knows what the exact timeline is, but I'd wager it'd have to at least be this year if he's been on it a bit. Especially with AD's name having stayed on the posters during it.Hybrid, Desplat left Rogue One just for his own idea? Thanks! A shame it doesn't clarify the nature of Jackman and Margeson's collaboration better, but it's nice to know what Dom Lewis did at any rate. He's a really good composer, often seems to contribute to some of the best moments of whichever score he's working on at the time (Cap 2).

One thing that puzzles me about this score is that, on album, in many areas it sounds as if we were given the synth mock ups for the score, rather than the recorded cues.

Anyways, yeah, this score sounds fun from what I've heard of it, but the style is all wrong for Winter Soldier. Not saying that score is good - it's dreadful for the most part - but this cool Bond/RC hybrid sound wouldn't have worked at all in that movie.

Hybrid, what do you find so good and enjoyable in this score? I've struggled to hear it once entirely, and during the movie it did me absolutely nothing, just a serviceable but random background music... So I never played it again.

I think TASM2 is way more enjoyable when it comes to fun electronic music for superheroes...

Well first of all I love the film, it's one of the best Marvels with Iron Man 1 & Thor 1...

When I first heard the OST I was like "Wait, what ??!", then I saw the film... :)

Then, as a kid from the 90s I love the constant influence of dance/electronica from the 90s on Jackman (in the Cap suite). Love the Cap main theme, and there's a great balance between pure orchestral madness by Dom Lewis & electro action by Margeson. The Winter Soldier I find the theme pretty impressive with the character, and it's actually a "theme", not ambient, just great electronica (and Dom Lewis' voiced sampled lol). The film also has a big influence (no idea if it's direct, indirect or totally unwanted lol) from the Metal Gear Solid saga, and the Hydra theme (choir & all) has also an influence (coincidence ?) from some of HGW's cues from Metal Gear Solid 2 (which I love :)).

And those who wanted CA 2 to be "traditional", well I think there's quite enough of that in the score (check the amazing Dom Lewis End Credits arrangement of the main theme, John Williams' style lol).

There's nothing wrong I can say against this score. Then, it's my taste, works for me... That's all... :)

I really hope a complete score emerges for that one soon. There seemed to be a lot more good stuff in the film than made the album, which was apparently designed to showcase as much of the unappealing music as humanly possible. I feel like I can't really fairly judge the score yet.

However - SPOILERS - I think the Winter Soldier theme is terrible. Besides making me want to claw my ears off for the most part, it's a totally inappropriate "Why So Serious?" wannabe forced onto a completely different character. The Winter Soldier isn't an agent of chaos, he's a good person who's been mutilated into a weapon for evil, and the theme seems to only acknowledge that latter half of his character. The mid-credits stinger in particular was ridiculously mis-scored - that was a moment of Bucky regaining his humanity, why did they layer that Godawful screech over it?!?

The new theme is OK, but unnecessary. Silvestri's - twisted into darker, less WWII-ish variations, of course - would have done a much better job. The rest of the score on album is third-rate by-the-numbers RC action and suspense that could have been in anything. Some of it, eg "Fury", represents pretty much the worst that RC can get IMO.

What's frustrating about this score is that at times you can clearly hear Jackman's talent peeking out and when it's in its good moments, it's really quite good. It's just that when it's in its bad moments, it's really, REALLY bad, and there's way more bad moments than good moments on that album. Like I said, I'd love to hear a complete for this one.

Yeah I can't wait for this movie and score! Matt Vaughn is an incredible director, and the music in his movies has been consistently cool (Kick-Ass, what a crazy score...) so I think we're in for a fantastic ride!
