I don’t care about those. Sure, I hope they get released for everyone who does want them badly, but I personally have zero interest in those. I will say it would also be nice to get Dunkirk and Inferno released at some point as well.

Imagine hoping for Inferno and Dunkirk while simultaneously not caring at all about Beyond Rangoon which is one of Zimmer's absolute best scores?! (Although I don't know how much there is missing beyond the album, I've never actually seen the film)
Unrelated side note - it seems like the credits have changed quite a bit on Chappie since last I looked. I seem to recall "Mayhem Downtown" being a solo Hans cue, now there's four guys!

Also, suddenly Ryan Amon's credited on a couple cues as well? The plot thickens...

I’m not a huge fan of either, but Dunkirk is meant to flow as one long piece of music. Not that chopped up album presentation. And Inferno does have a handful of interesting cues unreleased.

Edmund - if I recall correctly, those credits have been there for a couple of years at least. I don't remember ever seeing any solo Zimmer cues on Chappie, even when the page first went up.
And re: Beyond Rangoon, I do see where you're coming from, but to be fair, the material that's been released is very satisfying IMO, whereas I suspect some of the better Inferno material didn't make it to the album (that's just a hunch, though, as I've not seen the film; I just don't find the album presentation very contiguous).
mpolonest123
2019-01-24 23:02:21
@Ian Exactly. I’ve heard Beyond Rangoon on album and enjoyed it a lot. I’m more than happy with the presentation of music. Whereas Inferno (as flawed as it it) has a number of really good cues missing which I feel may have improved the listening experience for everyone, especially since the album suffers from that odd sequencing. And don’t get me started on Dunkirk....

i'm in the same boat here, but not for beyond rangoon, much more tears of the sun. so, how about tears of the sun? so much stuff that hasn't been released. just watch the movie and you hear plenty of beautiful cues. and it's 16 years now and still no complete score. batman v superman has borrowed a cue from it and everyone flipped out how unbelievable beautiful that cue is. tears of the sun has plenty of them, but no one speaks about it. just about dunkirk, inferno or chappie, those scratchy noice soundtracks -_-
So, now it's official that Blomkamp is directing the "Robo Cop Returns", do you guys think he will work with Hans? Or may be he would like to join hands with Lorne, seeing how his OATS Studio shorts are all scored by Lorne.

Love to hear a Zimmer RoboCop score but this has Balfe written all over it.
I've searched for days for the song at the end credits the soft beat, I can't find it anywhere. It also plays when he gets beat up and is on a hill with a dog but still no luck. I've listened to all the original soundtracks but is there a name or place I can download this track? It's driving me crazy

Tetravaal Tour was completely replaced in the film by another cue.
The other 2 are in the film but they were clearly rearranged after.
Very nice though, one is actually better than its film version !

I thought so, they don't sound as rich, spacious and organic like the rest of the score. Interesting as Rich is listed as synth programmer.
When you compare the two you realize how much effort that had to be put into the score to make it sound as good as it does despite being all electronics. It's remarkable how well Zimmer succeeds in making his electronic music sound organic, flowing and lifelike.

I LOVE Steve's work on this score. I am so happy he's working with HZ, if I see "HZ + SM" on a cue it's certain to be good. Really really hope there will be a Chappie 2 and HZ and SM returns do to the score!
The analogue Vangelis-ish electronic sound Zimmer & Co brought to Chappie is mesmerizing, wish we would hear this sound more often. As Vangelis has pretty much retired from film scoring, I wish to see Zimmer & Mazzaro follow in his roots as they seem to have the skills and equipment to do it.

I'm surprised to see Ryan Amon's name here, what input did he have?
I re-watched this movie this week and finally the score is very good. There are many more good musics than in the CD (which is misleading). Anyone knows if an Expanded score is planned ? Because it's really frustrating, like the Thin red line's official score :)

I was so impressed by the score initially (huge fan of the 90s synth scores from Hans (DOT, PH, RH, TR and esp PONR)....i love the analog string and saw wave sounds. This score FIT THE MOVIE PERFECTLY! I would love an expanded or complete score. One of my fav themes not on the CD is when the punks beat up Chappie, then it shows him on the railroad tracks disoriented, then walking up a hill over the city. It plays another time or two. The chord progression is superb! Thankfully, I recorded it from the end credits. One of my fav Hans & Co scores!
Unfortunately, I think the score to Chappie is pretty crappy. Another great opportunity missed by Hans. Just more themeless electronica experimental stuff. Come on Hans, please PLEASE write real epic scores again.

Hans always worked by periods. He started with soft synth-driven scores, then moved to electronic action scores (90s), then made (and became famous for) grand epic scores (2000s)... Now's the time for experimentation. If you don't like it, don't worry: the old scores still exist and we still can listen to them, so why do you complain??

I completely disagree, the score was fitting for the emotions per the scenes. Yes it has electronica but I think the decisions made fit perfectly!
Whenever I listen a ost before watching the movie and I like, I'm afraid to go to the cinema because maybe the same movie not live up to the music. For example: Jupiter Ascending, which has a very good music but as a movie is a disaster. But with Chappie has been one of those times when I leave the film even more eager to hear the music, because the images work together with Zimmer's music for an amazing way.
I'm more than a week in shock with this music, every day is a ritual hear it, hit my mind and the movie has finished breaking.
I do not understand the criticism towards it (or even to the music) but I must say, that Not Watch this film in Cinema is a serious mistake.
Can I have an honest opinion, if HZ's name wasn't on this release, but it sounded exactly like it does now, would you guys still like it, or even know of it's existence?

Depends on who composed it. If it would have been Cliff Martinez I probably wouldn't have liked it, since he's the master of electronic soundscapes and Chappie doesn't quite match up to it. The major reason I like the score is the "New-effect". He hasn't done this "8-bit-dance-whatever-step" thing yet so it's quite interesting to explore it. It's neither as enjoyable as TASM 2 nor has it many memorable moments but it's fresh as opposed to, let's say The Lone Ranger. I need to watch the movie, though, to make a final statement.

The movie is a blast. Original, funny, touching, bombastic, insane. You dont see many movies like this today. And the score was freaking brilliant, capturing the energy and making a few scenes incredibly epic. Another good point is that most of the music is included in the album. 2015-03-12 09:53:38
The problem I had with the gangsters was that they can't act lol. I would have wanted them to come in later, after chappie had grown up a little with his maker.
The they could have damaged him and made him throw k Ives etc... Digit et weaver has 5 minutes of screen time and those guys who aren't real actors have like 1 hour 30 minutes...what's up with that?
And lol the security of that weapons company is definitively bollocks lol:)
But all in all I think the movie raises some interesting questions and whenever chappie is on screen, the movie is good! All in all though I think it doesn't work as there are major problems with it!

I think that Yo-Landi was alright and pulled that "gangster-turned-mother" transition rather well. But Ninja, on the other hand... He seemed as the kind of guy that makes aliens postpone their visit of Earth. (Someone could actually pitch it to Blomkamp as a movie premise.) And, according to some reports, he was a huge dick to everyone on set (which doesn't surprise me at all... because, well, he chose "Ninja" as his pseudonym, you guys).

Why the wait? Is there some release of information that I don't know about? Not complaining, just genuinely curious.
Also, does anyone happen to know if this is in film order, and if all of the tracks are the film mixes or if some of them are suites? I haven't seen the movie, and probably won't until I can rent it, so I'm just wondering what's up.
When I first heard this score. It was just loud and brutal. After having seen the movie and having listened to the score multiple times I can say that I really like it a lot. It is a really emotional score in parts. Of course you get the awesome epic HZ sound but this is if you look closely a very emotional score...
In my opinion there's a great sadness throughout the movie with chappie and the gangsters he grows up with...
Funny this is that this is a "no orchestra, entirely synth" score.
Yet, it sounds like all the other scores he has done since Inception which featured orchestras.
If Hans keeps writing this kind of music he really doesn't have to bother with orchestra if he mixes it to sound like synth. It's waste of budget

2015-03-05 10:36:02
Man's got a point. On some of his scores (not all), I really do have to wonder why Hans even bothers getting an orchestra to record anything. Take Man of Steel...I really can't tell the difference in sound between the entirely-synthetic sketchbook and the (presumably) orchestral recordings in the rest of the score. If HZ had gone all-synth with that one nobody would have even noticed.
I don't like it. Makes the score sound cheap. I much prefer a more organic, "clean" synth-orchestral blend like TASM2.

The person who doesn't hear an orchestra in Inception has some serious issues... lol
Ds
2015-03-05 11:36:44
Edmund, about Man Of Steel, don't forget that most of the cues are not orchestra-based. Everything related to Zod was all drums plus some additional electronic distorsion. All the "soft theme" is just Hans playing his piano, plus sampled instruments (the weird guitars he used to suggest wind on electrical wires). So there are just occasional bursts of orchestra... most of them in parts that are not included in the sketchbook.
For me the sketchbook really sounds like synth, I don't like listening to it very much, while I simply dig the score itself.

I would pick this over that seriously overrated TASM2 score any day of the week. Chappie grows on me with every single listen. Hans has taken extremely fresh approach with it and it certainly shows. This unique score feels to me like a merger between 1980's and 2010's and I hope Hans explores this style more in the future. It's like a dirtier, grittier cousin to Daft Punk's Tron: Legacy, and I mean that as a compliment.
@Hybrid Do you know if there is still any music in the movie or on this album composed by the original composers who were gonna do this movie (Ryan Amon and someone else)?
An "Additional Music" credit on the FRONT COVER? First we had JunkieXL credited directly on "Arcade" and "General Zod," then we had everyone credited as one on TASM2, and now this? My, times are changing!

It's about time too.

It's a step up from those slightly shady "music produced by Lorne Balfe" credits on Inception and Sherlock Holmes. :p

That's a role model for the whole industry. Hundreds of ghost writers never see the light of day.

I meant light of day lol :D
I've listened it through now. This is completely out of the box for him. I guess the industry will change vastly in the future. The market will be overrun with music producers from all kinds of genres.
I love both hans orchestral and electronic scores, but I must say, this is not really my piece of cake. There are some moments where the typical hans harmonies can be heard and those are pretty awesome, and the soft tracks are nice, but some tracks are just dance beats...I hope there's some nice unreleased music in the movie, not heard on the ost.
Does anyone else feel like this about the score?

Not entirely... but it's YOUR opinion that counts.
