I think that Lorne Balfe write some material for that film because some of cues are similar to him and this film is one of the biggest blockbusters of that year and this is hardly to imagine if Hans Zimmer would write it without his best arranger Lorne Balfe. It's only my opinion

Lorne didn't work on MoS.

I still don't understand how Hans didn't call Lorne for Mos and BvS.

it’s simple: he never picked up the phone and dialed

Or better yet: Hans simply thought Balfe established himself well enough at that point, and decided instead to bring on people that needed more experience at that time.

Although I like the soundtrack, I think Jackman, Djawadi or Balfe would have worked better than Mazzaro or Kawczynski

So, I was wrong. Mr.Unbreakable, I agree with you. If Hans hired that people soundtrack would be better. It's good anyway, but would be better.
P.S. The main action motif (half of score)) inspired by King Arthur's Main Theme - "Woad To Ruin"
Has anyone else noticed that the last 2 minutes of the Zod suite sound very similar to the last 2 minutes of "We Are Now the Gods" from The Last Airbender?

Perhaps it's just me, the chords and tempo sounded close enough although the structure is different.

Yeah I can hear a slight similarity, very interesting.
Actually thought all the BvS cues were unreleased but appears Wreckage and The Desert are the only ones.

He's also pitched the audio down by approx 10% using a program like audacity, which cannot be reversed without severe defects/distortion/artifacts in the audio. Which kills it for me.
Ahmad
2016-10-19 23:36:24
To me the only unreleased cue is "Wreckage"! The rest were actually released. "The Desert" is just edited "Blood Of My Blood", "Post Apocalypse" is "Must There Be A Superman?", "Thug Fight" is "Fight Night", "Underground Torture" is an edited part of "New Rules". In case anyone didn't know that already.
Some of the cues I wish were released are: Bruce checking the drive (Meta humans) Bruce training Variations of "Day Of The Dead" (when superman arrives at the capitol building, when he fights doomsday, the cue right after "Black and Blue" when he flight to go fight Lex, Supes statue vandalism) Variations of Lex's theme (Lex Corp Helipad scene - choir parts)
mpolonest123
2016-10-20 00:51:28
Actually the first 30 or so seconds of Post Apocalypse are unreleased, although it's nothing substantial.
Everan
2016-10-20 15:47:48
I think some tiny bits of Desert and Post Apocalypse are used in the extended cut, just to add those few seconds of cut content. Wreckage is definetely new, and the start of Post Apocalypse sounds a bit different in the film due to the World Engine sound effect.
I recall Zimmer claiming he composed the final battle sequence between Superman and General Zod, yet here we are, with a co credit with Andrew Andrew Kawczynski and Junkie XL. Pretty interesting, but a tad issapointed. :P

Mike
2016-10-19 15:18:17
*sigh* I don't mean to sound like a bitter curmudgeon, but here goes, for everybody... :)
Hans *did* compose the final battle sequence! The entire "If You Love These People" / "Battle Continues" cue is written 90% of the way in the MoS Sketchbook suite. Even the final product may be 98% Zimmer. We don't know what Andrew Kawcynski contributed, but it may or may not have been substantial. A
nd even if he made all the changes from the suite version to the cue version, we need to remember a point that has been made several times here: Hans co-writes most of the cues! So even if someone else contributed, *he* still wrote it, too. It's not like he just sits back while everyone else goes to work on things.
Great, however "First Flight (Film Mix)" doesn't correspond the actual film version.
In the final part, the violin stem is missing. Instead of this we get the electric guitar. Is this another case of the "No-time-for-caution-problem"?
Hybrid Soldier

Yep, and all is here, the mix is just buried a little... Get over that kind of things, people... lol

It's not even close to being a NTFC problem.
Medigo
2015-03-09 13:02:55
The violin stem is clearly there in the track its just not easy to hear
Mike
2015-03-09 14:23:10
Yeah, at this point, we just need to get over it. It's a much closer mix to the film version than the Flight track on CD, and it's much MUCH closer to its film counterpart than No Time for Caution was. The strings are definitely there, louder than on album. Be happy!

Hybrid, thank you very much for clarification.
It's interesting though how this discussion leads to aggressive reactions. There's no need to be rude.
My comment was rather meant as indication, not to moan about differences between the versions.
I've listened to the film mix again and indeed the violin stem is there. I was just a bit confused because this stem is much louder in the actual film mix.
The term "No-time-for-caution-problematic" is to be unerstood in a general manner. I chose the Interstellar example to give this problem a name because it's the most known and most drastic example of differences between film and CD version.
Again, I have to apologize if my comment led to any inconveniences but there's no need to get aggressive and rude.
Now, let's get back to listen to some good MOS music ...

Inceptions 'dont think about elephants' is a much better NTFC case anyway, heh

Where in this First Flight "Film Mix" does this violin stem appear?
Anonymous
2016-03-05 16:13:01
Old discussion and maybe this is too off-topic but one film-version cue that's even more troubling than NTFC for me is the Batman Chased cue... :P At least the core of NTFC is the same as the film version, they changed changed the organ emphasis. Same with the Flight alternate.

Hans said in one interview that it got "really boring" after a while. or something to that effect, which is why he cut it back. But the stuff not there is undoubtedly in one or more of the other tracks. That tends to be how "shortened suites" work.
mpolonest123
2016-01-24 17:50:19
Wrong post, sorry
@Hybrid, any idea what the cut music was? If Hans thought it was "boring" maybe it just was ambient filler stuff....
@Hybrid, On twitter Eric Whitacre confirmed he was working on Hans Zimmer score for the next four months. That wouldn't happen to be for a certain super hero film would it?
Final Confrontation and Battle Continues are the mother of all third acts in film soundtracks.

What do the numbers mean in the track names for complete scores? For instance, "3m15b First Flight"? thanks!
Anonymous
2015-03-10 21:48:01
Like the film themselves when they are delivered to theatres, the music comes on reels. the first number represents the reel the music is on. The m represents "music", or "cue". The next number represents what cue # it is. And "b" means it's the second parts of the cue. There was most likely an "a".
Thanks Soldier. The complete film score of Man of Steel is ultimately the BEST I've ever listened to! Kudos to Hans Zimmer, Junkie XL, Andrew Kawczynski, and Steve Mazzaro!

After listening over 3 hours of the Man of Steel complete score, it's extremely difficult for me to find which track was the best. All of them are the best, IMHO, because it truly match the action and emotion directly from the film.

Adam
2015-03-08 18:51:21
Me too, Ds!! :D
Edmund Meinerts
2015-03-08 19:18:48
Fanboyism is not something to be proud of. You can be a fan of somebody without blindly praising every score they put out and saying it's the greatest thing ever written (until, of course, the next one comes out). There's plenty of stuff by John Powell that I'll be the first to admit isn't that great (Fair Game...zzzzz) - doesn't stop me being a fan of his! Same with Hans. I'm really not trying to take the fun out of music or anything, but the tiniest amount of critical listening really does go a long way, IMO.
Edmund Meinerts
2015-03-08 19:20:57
Also, Ds, I should say that I don't think YOU are a "fanboy" in the negative sense of the term. You're certainly enthusiastic about Hans but you also have actual things to say about the music beyond "OMG SO AWESOME BEST EVR" - that's really all I ask. :)
Marcos
2015-03-08 20:00:49
is not Fanboyism, is just the fact that at last we got something we have been waiting for long long time. Besides is the same music of the album but expanded, there is not too much new to say about the score.
Edmund Meinerts
2015-03-08 20:08:23
A person saying that this is the BEST score they had ever heard (based on one listen to the complete score) isn't fanboyism? I get that people are excited to have this...but come on.
Mike
2015-03-08 20:12:12
Ds, what Edmund said. :) Trust me when I tell you I'm a huge fan of Zimmer. Most of my scores—heck, most of my music, maybe!—come from him, but as Edmund pointed out, it's good to appreciate someone's music AND be able to listen somewhat critically, beyond just "OMG GREATEST SCORE EVER".
I admit, "fanboy" tendencies come out in me from time to time (like when this score first came out...I thought it was the greatest thing). But largely due to commenters like Edmund, and much as I almost always disagree with it, sites like Filmtracks, I now approach scores with both an enthusiastic and a critical ear. I still like MoS a lot and listen to it often, for example, but I now also notice some of its faults more clearly than I did at first. :)
Marcos
2015-03-08 20:19:19
well . . for me is really the best!, after the dark knight trilogy of course. :P . All Zimmer's works with Nolan (as producer in this case) curiosly are his best works, and i say this musically speaking
Adam
2015-03-08 20:35:15
It is healthy to be able to criticize HZ because there's too many people who drool over all his works and say he's the best!! Does it count if I say Pirates 4 is horrible? :P
Mike
2015-03-08 20:37:49
Eh, idk...doesn't EVERYONE agree about POTC4 being horrible? ;)
Marcos
2015-03-08 20:44:20
I swear , i listened All Zimmer's works (released of course) , but i never listened even one album of Pirates of Caribbean, i don't know why . . is rare because i know that it's one of his most important works, but some of this does not appeal to me
Adam
2015-03-08 21:10:00
That's why I asked if it counts about Pirates 4! :D
I may have to think of some other Zimmer scores that aren't great. Hmm this can take a while!
Ds
2015-03-08 22:02:29
Well Edmund I think you are right. Even if in this case I ´m almost incapable of criticizing any Zimmer score. Even if some of his output surprised me in a bad way, I learned one lesson: Zimmer is a visionary and I have always ended up liking his music. Always. Maybe a few days or weeks or even months later. In other words I choose to trust his talent over my (limited) musical taste. The same applies to Thomas Bergersen as well, but that´s it.
But yeah I am also a bit tired of people screaming that every new score is his best ever. Everyone knows his best are King Arthur and At World´s End :-p

Hans can hardly be blamed for how POC4 ended up
Mike

I think of PotC4 as like a "best of" from the trilogy lol!
If there was one complete score I was eagerly waiting for, it was definitely this one. So freaking amazing action music, Escape From Ship, Smallville Duel (10 minutes of violence!!), Final Confrontation... I'm delighted. What a week, thanks HZ!
