You know, I'll never understand why "The Spaniard" theme from 'Duduk of the North' was never utilized throughout this score. I'm guessing it was Ridley's decision but considering how beautiful the piece is, it really is a shame.
Same thing with the expanded Zod material in MoS

I recently listened to Duduk of the North and I thought it was an excellent piece of music. But, you know... a good idea doesn't always make the "perfect" idea. You can't keep everything. I love how Gladiator turned out: The score in the film has a flavour and a consistency that is pretty unique, a wonderful achievement as it is!

2017-04-24 01:11:57
Very true. The film definitely comes first, and Hans' score in context is incredible. It's just a little funny that they kept the 'flavor' of the theme with the Spanish guitars but never state it.

It's OK, he got to use it for the Kraken in Dead Man's Chest! ;)

Wow Edmund, I'm impressed... where do you hear this theme in The Kraken? They sound like completely different pieces of music to me :-D
Edmund Meinerts
2017-04-25 22:05:38
Sounds to me like the big dramatic Bach-like theme at the very end of the Kraken. Only a slight similarity though :p
mpolonest123
2017-04-25 23:11:10
@Edmund Hahahahaha..... yeah, I've always heard that too. Even the chopping string section in the background of both pieces is vaguely similar.
Mr Tweedy
2017-04-26 18:19:45
@mpolonest123 Actually, there's a small hint at the "spaniard" guitar theme after the sequence where he escapes his execution (track "Homecoming" on the More Music album).
mpolonest123
2017-04-26 20:53:22
@MrTweedy That is true, and you do get the guitars in "Barbarian Horde" (not sure where else though).
I have to admit, as revolutionary as Gladiator was at the time, I think it's one of Zimmer's more overrated scores. Not that I necessarily think it's bad, but IMO both Last Samurai and King Arthur show a much stronger balance of themes and action writing, yet unfortunately were never as recognized by the mainstream the same way Gladiator was.

mpolonest123 I totally agree with you. It's not that I don't like Gladiator (is an awesome score) but I think The Last Samurai is one of Zimmer's most underrated scores and for me is one of his bests'
Maximus is not on the Elysium, and he is not dead!!!
Ridley Scott:"I know how to bring him back... there is a way of bringing him back"
Who will compose the soundtrack? I hope you will participate again Lisa Gerrard.
Strength and honor!

What a terrible idea. I hope this doesn't happen.
Scorefan
2017-03-13 19:49:59
Maybe as a prequel, but it's a risk idea. And it's sure, Zimmer won't come back to score another Ridley film.

2017-03-14 23:40:04
Why come Zimmer not back to compose a ridley film?
Scorefan
2017-03-16 03:26:17
Because he said he wouldn't come back for another ridley film. It was Kingdom of heaven was initially for Zimmer and Madagascar for Harry. In the middle of time, they changed films. Zimmer said it was exhausting working on Gladiator and like Hybrid said before, it was a mess of Matchstick men. So, that's the reason.
METO
2017-03-16 03:30:57
But I find a pity. That the work on gladiator was not easy I knew. But is nothing new in the film industry. Ridley Scott and Hans Zimmer have been a great team for many years.

2017-03-16 13:56:44
If not Hans, Mancina should do it.
Mike (Old Timer Mike)
2017-03-16 20:05:35
I think Harry Gregson-Williams should do it, if Hans can't be convinced. (Well, actually, my first choice would be, don't make a sequel ;] ). But if anyone works on the film, Hans would be my first choice.

2017-03-16 22:04:09
If this happens (and I really, really hope it doesn't), Jed Kurzel will probably be hired, and then he'll be replaced by an even less known composer in the middle of production. That's how it works with Ridley these days, it seems...
Mike (Old Timer Mike)
2017-03-16 22:11:07
@Ds, do we really think Ridley - and the studio - would take such a chance? Gladiator's score was a massive hit back in the day. I can't imagine they wouldn't try to capitalize on its success, and on Hans' even greater popularity now.
asd
2017-03-16 22:39:41
if they do a sequel, then they should hire Klaus Badelt. He scored a lot with Hans on Gladiator. And please not Balfe again. He's a good score-filler, but not great in finding themes and melodies.
Mike
2017-03-17 00:15:27
Balfe can't find themes or melodies ????? Have you not hear Beyond, AC3 or Home ????? Full of great themes
Timmusic

Balfe's theme,s in The Bible are amazing .He could easier do it I think
God, Spotify is so messed up! It credits all the orchestrators as the composers of the score. Hans is not even mentioned.
Zimson
2014-05-19 21:30:25
Same with Thin Red Line btw. It's credited to Gavin Greenaway. I already contacted Spotify and they responded that they would take care of that problem, but didn't do anything about it, lol. I was told that they get all their information from the publishers.
I just watched the featurette about the music on the Gladiator blu-ray, it was very, very interesting and... my God, Hans looked so young, I couldn't believe my eyes.
Watch this interview, then watch the interviews he gave about Man Of Steel last year, it's a completely different world!

Does that mean Now We Are Free is actually from Badelt?
Mike
2013-12-18 18:59:52
Hans and Badelt, I think. Because look, "Elysium" lists Badelt only, while "Now We Are Free" lists Hans Zimmer and Klaus Badelt. I think with Now We Are Free, Zimmer took what Badelt did in Elysium and used it.
Zimson
2013-12-18 19:19:59
Yeah but basically it would be Badelt's theme then, like "He's a Pirate" is Zimmer's theme.

Mr Tweedy
2011-08-18 19:30:01
Dear Hybrid, here is my "exposé" ! =)
The film version of Air Battle (the "orchestral version") is such a mess. The recording session of this track was pure chaos : some instruments are playing wrong notes (trumpets !), the cue sounds very weak (small orchestra) and especially rushed (last minute change ?).
I'm glad Klaus put his original synth mock up on his website instead of the film version... of course it's not exactly what you hear in the movie, but at least these are (nearly) the same notes, it has some raw power with Zimmer's trademark orchestral samples, the "waltz part" which was unreleased until now, is eventually available... I don't see any reason to complain here !
@Smith I think Hybrid is doing his fair part of contribution to the Zimmer fan community (Inception bonus tracks, anyone?). Finding some new source of music doesn't mean claiming it to everybody here within the next few minutes... especially when you know that most people here are gonna make bootleg CDs out of these new cues and share them on forums, not even buying Zimmer CDs and so on...

Wow, Gladiator is on top now in the top 50. I wonder if this got voted up or if HTTYD got voted down.

This is one of Zimmer's greatest works. Even though he may have copied Holst's The Planets for some of the cues, this soundtrack cannot be topped and the track "Honor Him" is one the greatest themes to ever come out of Hans' mind.
That's pretty cool. "Strength And Honor" is my favorite track from this album, and it was really really late at night when I was watching the deleted scenes, so I thought I was just hearing things. But it's really in there....
If anyone has the Extended Collector's Edition of Avatar, there's a deleted scene on Pandora that uses the track "Strength And Honor" from this Soundtrack.
Yeah apparently someone likes Zimmer and Co. enough to use their music as temp music for the deleted scenes. I also heard some John Powell from what I think was from The Bourne Identity or Supremacy. Not too sure unless I'm completely wrong. Then there was a track from The Thin Red Line in there too.
Damn, that's disappointing. You're definitely right on the whole plagiarism thing. So do you add everything, or just some? Cause I'm wondering if you added The Dark Knight 3-Disc. And if so, you're telling me that's real =)
1.) I like that each track is listed as to who did what, so thank you. 2.) Wikipedia states (I take info from wiki with a grain of salt, as anyone with a grudge against Hans could have added it) that Hans was sued beacuse "the music for many of the battle scenes has been noted as similar to Gustav Holst's 'Mars: The Bringer of War', and in June 2006, the Holst Foundation sued Hans Zimmer for allegedly copying the late Gustav Holst's work.' Is this true? 3.) Where is the COMPLETE score for Gladiator? There is a 3-disc with 21 tracks on each disc. I have it, but I'm just wondering why it's not on the site. I see it everywhere, literally.
Though, to me, it was a bit ridiculous... Of course the Gladiator Waltz is inspired by Holst's Mars, but there's definitely no plagiarism. I mean, if THIS is plagiarism, then a million of film score composers, the Horners, Williams, JNHs or Poledouris should have been sued for ripping classical music... :P
And as for that bootleg... Well, I know how it's made... But I think there are enough fake Gladiator complete scores on this site... :P
