He suffered criticism at the beginning of his career by sounding like Zimmer, but soon showed substance. And much more than that created an identifiable style, which today is reference to other scores of modern animations (which may be good or bad to depend on of the point of view).<br>Today he is an established composer and it is common for these composers to move away for a few years or even close their careers without many explanations for the public. In recent years we watched the estrangement of Silvestri, Horner, Williams and in the past we saw Faltemeyer, Bill Conti and Brad Fiedel drop their careers when they were at the top of the game.<br><br>" Say anything you will about Lorne Balfe, but at least he is working his ass off and slowly getting better and better"<br><br>As they said in another comment, you're compared to newbies and veterans. Just listened to the whole thing, kind of a let down. Nothing interessting except for some action moments. Don’t even recall hearing some sort of theme. Overall it was like listening to Cars 4: Spanish World Cup.I have already listened to The Jumanji Overture and I must say it sounds really great. One more thing: if indeed the reason for Powell's semi-hiatus was to be with his family as much as possible, we may well see his activity increase again in coming years now that his wife has passed away and his son is close to graduating high school (I couldn't find an exact date of birth for him but I think he's 16 or 17). Him taking on a project as big and ambitious as Star Wars isn't exactly the sign of someone who wants to take it easy. It's too early to say yet though.hans should win the oscar for best sound effects and not for the best music/score. just as a statement.And it's also unfair to use Balfe to criticize Powell. He started working on American projects in 2005 with Batman Begins, and only after 2010 did he receive individual projects. Is it accurate to compare someone who entered the party at the last minute with two others who are in it for 20 (Powell) and 30 (Zimmer)?<br><br>I'm in a hurry and I put everything into a translator. Forgive the many mistakes.<br> <br><br><br>Composers do not need to worry about the attention, acceptance of the public of the same or the same intensity as pop music artists do. There's no need to do that. Occasionally some name draws attention to the public and causes many people to be in the genre, Williams and Zimmer are the main examples that I can bring the table. However it is not because Williams or Zimmer are extremely popular and perhaps worry about the material they are offering to the public who adores them that all the composers of the world need to do equal. Most of these men and women even enxeega as "celebrity". They are more like artisans or the rest of the crew of a film that occupies with the lights, effects and costumes and that will never have the same response from the public as the main actor. And they don't even expect it. So I think it's foolish to wait for Powell to occupy himself in 2,3 movies a year to please a fanbase.<br><br>I'll agree with you when it says it's deplorable to see CPR composers who talk so much about building a single voice and giving emerging talent the opportunity to use so many additional composers (many of them with a possible promise that in the future they will work with Zimmer and thus have the opportunity to show his face in Hollywood.The sense is almost always these.You start with a secondary composer, he arrives at Zimmer and gains some kind of notoriety). But Powell is not the only one who does this. So he should not be the only one criticized.Well...it's a film score. It has no obligation to provide a pleasant or enjoyable listening experience, and for an award like this that doesn't really come into consideration. So if it works in the film, it did its job and that's all that matters.<br><br>For me personally, as someone who cares about music first and films second, a score like Dunkirk has little value. A few years ago I probably would have been pretty mad about this score winning awards and acclaim (you should have seen how salty I got when The Social Network beat out HTTYD), but these days... *shrug*. I know what I like, Dunkirk isn't it, and that's fine. It wasn't written for me. Do I wish Hans still wrote the kind of music I like? Of course. But he gets to make his own choices as an artist, just as I get to choose what to listen to as a fan.
The score is already on itunes.This score... so many mixed emotions. Does it work for the film? Heck yeah. Does it improve the film? So much so. Did Hans do what he set out to do? Totally. Is it an award winning masterpiece? Um, not so fast.<br><br>Dunkirk, while super effective within the context of the film (I wouldn’t change a thing about it), I must admit, it doesn’t have nearly the same effect as a stand-alone listen. It’s literally the same textures and notes over and over again, just slightly rising and falling in pitch and tempo. Does that make it “award” worthy? I’m not sure. If based solely on the film, you betcha. If based purely on the music itself, I don’t think so. That’s where Interstellar succeeds so far and away over Dunkirk. As a pure listening experience, Interstellar is interesting, multi-layered and emotional. Whereas Dunkirk is just flat, void of any sort of feeling or “actual” music (again, works IN the film). It’s glorified sound FX (save for the end, which, no doubt, is in large part to Ben).<br><br>Hmm... I’ve never had a score tear me apart more than this one. I both love it and hate it. Maybe it did it’s job... lol.<br><br>Excuse me while I go listen to No Time for Caution yet again.I think most of us agree that he should've won for Interstellar but I think Dunkirk deserves it too. The work Hans and the music department did on this movie is just incredible. Must've been a lot of hard work. <br>An award is an award, Hans' 2nd Oscar is long overdue so I'd be glad to see him win. But it would be weird to see him win for THAT score, after all the greatnesses of the past 20 years. Same thing with Morricone who won his only Oscar for his very light and insignificant work on Hateful Eight. Good for the man, good for the fans, but doesn't really make sense. But have Oscars ever made sense? :-phaha hybrid :D made my day

I honestly like this score a lot but man whoever mixed this needs to be fired. I feel like maybe Zanelli wanted so many things to be heard in the score which, in my opinion, muddled it up a bit and “frontloaddd” it, meaning there is a lack of depth to these tracks and makes it sound kinda flat :/ I’d pay good money for someone to re-master this score.

I am doing the private Complete Score With SFX album for myself, I am separating scenes, where the music is playing, I am holding the Original of the Film of course Pirates of the Caribbean Dead Men Tell No Tales - Salazar's Revenge. And I am asking, since I don't know how works are called, and in the film the music is probably interfacing, there are no breaks.

Honestly this score has been growing on me. Granted, it's definitely not in the same league as the other three but I do have to give Zanelli props for treating the material with respect and putting some actually effort into it. Even the themes, which I didn't really grasp the first few listens, have begun to stick with me (particularly the 'trident' motif). It's one of those scores where repeated listens definitely improve the experience.

I think one of the big issues that I've noticed is that Zanelli's writing style doesn't seem to mesh as well with the previous Pirate tunes. The recording mix certainly doesn't help either. The overall sound somewhat lacks that beefier Zimmer style which, to a degree, is understandable. Also, whoever forced the temp of Beckett's death in "Treasure" should be flogged.

Last but not least, I think this album certainly could have benefitted from some more suite type cues, assuming Zanelli wrote any. Say what you will about Zimmer inundating his albums with suites, at least it gives you an idea of the development of themes for that particular score. Just my two cents.

I keep wondering why anyone would feel like that about the new themes when Zanelli himself wrote several themes throughout the whole franchise?

His themes (at the least) includes Tia Dalma theme, the Music Island from DMC and The Spaniards theme from OST, and nobody said anything about not "meshing" well. I think if Zimmer had written them, maybe would have been criticized for not being as catchy as the main ones, but not for not matching with the rest.

Besides, I don't remember any of the main themes of the whole saga learned and sticked with me after several listens. I do loved them immediately the first time I watched the movies and listened to the albums, but couldn't humble them after a while (specially my favorite theme of all which is the AWE main theme. Same happened with The Force Awakens new themes).

So I think they are good-to-great themes, just wait a little longer.

I never said the themes themselves don't mesh, moreover the writing style/orchestration/recording mix of this particular score. Understandably, Geoff Zanelli isn't Hans Zimmer so obviously DMTNT isn't going to sound like Zimmer. But I do find it somewhat interesting that the previous Pirate scores, despite each having about 8 or 9 different composers on the team, always had a cohesive sound.

When listening to them as a whole (without the credits included) you can't always necessarily point out individual voices in the score as far as style or orchestration (such as that's a Zanelli or Jackman cue). That's one thing Zimmer has always excelled at, being able to write music in a group setting and always pull it together with one distinctive sound and cohesiveness. When I listen to this album I can obviously hear it not being from the same group that did Curse of the Black Pearl and so on.

It might sound like I'm complaining but I do like the fact that Zanelli wrote this in his own voice. I just feel like the reprises of previous themes do somewhat expose the differences in style and whatnot. But hey, that's just me. Overall I genuinely like this score, even the Salazar theme has grown on me (and to be fair I never really cared for Blackbeard's tune)

And to clarify one thing, I do know that you can hear some DNA of the different ghost writers in the previous scores, but each cue meshes insanely well together without feeling like a team effort as opposed to TASM2 or Rango.

And yes, I totally agree with you... it sounds different, but I think, by the interviews with Zanelli, you can tell is not by accident. In fact, for me at least, it sounds closer to a wider orchestral soundscape quality if you will than previous POTC scores. Which if you listen to pasts Zanelli's works you'll find more understandable (his personal musical preferences leans a little bit more towards classical than Zimmer's)

I listened the score with my Senn HD598 headphones and contrary to what others say, I found it to be a more breathable, wider, and orchestral recording than the previous soundtracks.

Yeah, I definitely agree. It has (for lack of a better word) a more swashbuckling sound as opposed to the faux rock style of the first two or the epic movements of AWE.

And DMTNT would definitely have sounded different regardless of who wrote it. Imagine a Lorne Balfe take on the idea. Or a John Powell. Or a Junkie Xl (lol)

Exactly! ... liked the expression; a bit more of a "swashbuckling sound" is just what I tried to say. If I recall correctly is part of the "freshness" they wanted to "reboot" with this franchise.

And yeah, definitely it would have sounded different with any of those.

Just saw the film recently and boy, what a mess. In some ways it’s worse than Stranger Tides, mainly because the writing comes across as fan fiction and you can tell that they put effort into making it, which increased my personal disappointment.

The score on the other hand, after hearing it in context, is incredible. While my issue with the recording mix still stands, Geoff knocked it out of the ballpark. Each theme is used correctly and actually receive development throughout. And there are SEVERAL unreleased cues that stood out to me. The only reason I want this franchise to continue is to hear what else he would write lol

Doesn't beat the first three films, however, I think this score is brilliant in its own right. I love the new themes Zanelli brought to the table (Carina/Barbossa theme, Salazar's theme, Adventure theme, etc.) and he did a fantastic job at blending old and new music to create something that sounded unique, yet classic at the same time. Cannot wait until the Complete Score is released.

I would say On Stranger Tides is my least favorite score (although it has some fantastic cues and themes (Blackbeard's theme, Angelica's theme, Spanish theme, etc.). Just felt like it was really missing the heart and emotion of the first 3 scores, which Dead Men Tell No Tales brought back. Honestly, it's still a fantastic score, and much better than the majority of blockbuster soundtracks I hear today.

Having gotten the chance to meet Geoff a couple months back at the ASCAP Expo (albeit very briefly) it was clear he was very enthusiastic about working on Pirates, and even The Lone Ranger which the Disney soundtrack executive tried to silence him on talking about lol While nothing will ever compare to the original trilogy, score wise and film wise, this is a very nicely executed extension of the music in the world of Pirates. It's on the scale of honoring the original style and themes while injecting some new material much like what Giacchino did with Rogue One, which I happened to have liked as well. It's not meant to be the kind of score that stands out as 'unique and different', it's about honoring the tradition. I look forward to hearing what else Zanelli has to offer in the future.

I must be the biggest weirdo in all of film score history, because the highlight of DMTNT for me was "I've Come With the Butcher's Bill." It resonated instrumentally, most notably that badass cello (?) at around the 2:35 mark, it was the perfect blend of old and new themes, and best of all, it sounded like a swashbuckling theme. As much as I loved the action cues in the first three, I sometimes felt that they resembled a Latin hell choir more than a traditional pirate piece, especially AWE. It's good listening, but sometimes it sounded more like Gregorian Chanters of the Caribbean. :P
I seriously blast Butcher's Bill out loud on the highway, I love it so much.

That 6:09 to 6:38 of "El Matador Del Mar" was clearly temped with 6:36 to 6:59 of "Barbarian Horde" from "Gladiator". It stood out so much that I had to do a double take and replay the track just to make sure I wasn't listening to the wrong album! But overall, I have really enjoyed this album: it is a nice extension and slight development of Hans' (and others') themes from the previous movies, and Zanelli's new additions (although a bit bland and generic) really fit in musically to the "Pirates of the Caribbean" sound we've come to know (and which some of us love). I actually also like the mixing work that was done on the soundtrack: it really gives the orchestral recording a big, thick, organic sound, much more so than the previous scores which were quite synthetic (even "On Stranger Tides", with barely any synths used at all, was mixed to a degree where it still sounded relatively unnatural and overly bassy).

I see nothing wrong with this score.

It doesn't have the gimmick of Tides with the Spanish guitar riffs, doesn't have a crappy album presentation, sounds pretty much like a pirates score...

and at least has a couple of decent themes in it, to boot.

At film number 5 I don't expect genius. I expect serviceable and respectful to what came before, and we get that here....

I think it is a huge mistake that this is not on the score because it is (in my opinion) one of the best version of "one day". And its the full song and not just a short version like "my name is Barbossa". But at least you can say that the version in the ending scene sounded very very big and majestic.

Well.. I saw the movie, and I liked though not as much as the trilogy, but its very enjoyable in its own right. Capture much more of the firsts movies feeling that OST did. What I think I missed the most was Verbinski's weird sensibilities, grittiness and timming, but oh well as long as he doesn't want to return to this series, it will be something to miss for ever.

As for the Zanelli's score I loved it. I think is much better than Curse of the Black Pearl, which I think is the one we should compare with. Remember this new movie is, in theory the 1st one of a new part of the saga, so... compare it to AWE I think is very unfair... Not just the characters but the story itself must earn the epicness just as AWE did, thats how Zimmer desceibed it at the time. So this new one is the lowest end of Pirates epicness yet, or at least is the way I see it. If they keep doing more and Zenlli is still there, I'm sure it'll have to grow in scope and reach AWE highs and maybe even more.

I haven't seen the movie yet, but I will soon, but I've heard the soundtrack and I have only one thing to say. This is the best score of the franchise since At World's End. I had tears in my eyes every time an old theme played. I liked the score for On Stranger Tides, but I didn't like how it relied too much on older themes. I appreciate this score for not using the Ship battle theme and the rolling cage chase motif which I'm kinda tired of hearing them. I love the clever use of One Day as a theme for Henry Turner. Of course, everytime Jack's Themes (both the intro theme, the cello theme, and his DMC theme) and He's A Pirate show up, I can't help but smile and jump up and down. What about the new stuff? A lot of people have criticized Salazar's Theme for sounding like Blackbeard. It does don't get me wrong, but Zanelli isn't the first person to do this. The Winter Soldier is derived from Why So Serious. Optimus Prime's theme is IDENTICAL to the Knights March from King Arthur. Discombobulate from Sherlock Holmes, Absurdity from The Lone Ranger, and The Red Capes Are Coming from Batman v. Superman ALL SOUND THE SAME. They're awesome, but similar. Why is it so bad now? I like the rock elements in Salazar's theme and it makes it quite scary. Carina's Theme (The Brightest Star in the North) is also the main theme of the movie and it is perfect beyond belief. Her theme very much resembles past love themes, but it has a sense of herorism to it. I always gravitate to composer's themes for female characters (John Williams with my girls from Star Wars). The new adventure theme is epic! It does sound like He's A Pirate, but it is very catchy. I don't know what the score sounds like in the movie, but it sounds really good on the official soundtrack. To end this, all the action music is incredibly fun. Hans should be proud. Here are my top 5 favorite tracks:

I saw the movie tonight and I think that the music is great on the album, but in the movie it's fantastic. It gives something special and something extra to a lot of scenes. I think Zanelli did a great job on the score, with the use if new and old themes.

As "Hedon" said below, "Zanelli is a great arranger, but he is not a great composer". I extremely agree with him.
I believe if someone like John Powell had done this score, we would hear a far better soundtrack. All of us saw what a spectacular job he did in KungFu Panda 2 with Hans.
The obvious thing is people like John Powell, Harry Gregson-Williams, JunkieXL or Nick Glennie-Smith, their mind moves where Hans' moves.
I'm not saying Zanelli does not include this case, I'm saying there were so many better options to choose the right person to do this score.

I hope Hans will "return" to the Pirates franchise I mean he has not done "Dead men tell no tales" just because Dunkirk and his live tour were in the way. Even Zanelli said that they all sat together and felt ready to start the project. Because of the fact that Zanelli is responsible that the "he's a pirate" theme sounds like it does I would love to hear a Score by Hans Zimmer & Geoff Zanelli for the real Finale !

What I don't understand is why couldn't they at least aim for the best soundscape this franchise have had by bringing the rest of the team from AWE of composers, arrangers and orchestrators back. If we look at AWE, apart from Zimmer, there was Zanelli, Jackman, Glennie-Smith, Balfe, Örvarsson, Gire and Sponsler on board. If they could choose one lead composer in Zimmer's absence, then whatever some dude wrote would at least sound interesting because of the colorful instrumentation and big, fresh orchestral sound AWE had. Or maybe, just rearrange old themes from the other movies in true AWE style would work just as well. There's plenty of material from POTC 1 that hasn't been used in the other films, and much of it would shine if orchestrated and performed in AWE's sonic fashion rather than the cheap sound the first film had.
