Well... Zanelli composed Tia Dalma and the percussive Island music from the past trilogy at the least... also the spaniards theme from OST which was my favorite new theme. <br><br>in a new interview Zanelli explains that he, both directors and Zimmer sat down to decide on the new music, so Zimmer is still present... search the interview in filmmusicmg.comno Eric sorry but there is nothing noticeable in the score for Barbossa. Nothing new i mean :/Does Barbossa have a theme in Dead Men Tell No Tales?Ok guys, I just saw the movie too, in "avant-premi&#232;re" in France. I must begin by saying i'm a huge fan of PotC since 10 years now, and especially thanks to the music, such original for a "hollywood movie". I remember myself earing the Singapore theme in the theatre, and thinking "ooh my god, I've never heard something like that before ! It's sooo coool !". And, I have never heard anything like this since in others blockbusters. The scores was very uniques.<br> Since 10 years now i'm a fan of Zimmer too and i know every single note of every Pirate film, and i'm not kidding. <br>So the movie was ok, great beginning, disappointing ending but LET'S TALK ABOUT THE SCORE !!!<br><br>First of all, Zanelli is not Zimmer. It's simple : after watching any pirate movie (even OnStTi) we had a new theme in mind (The Main Theme, the Kraken Theme, Davy Jones, Hoist the Colors, One Day, Up Is Down, Mermaids etc.). Here, we don't. The music "feels pirate" but that's all ; no remarquable new great theme... sorry guys. Well, the only really remarquable is the Salazar's theme, between The Kraken, BlackBeard and Davy Jones, but we just remember the rock guitar, not the melody ;-(<br><br>It's hard to admit, especially from a fan who expected a lot from Zanelli, but the Soundtrack is just another hollywood soundtrack, barely remarkable, without originality. The greats themes are these from the others movies, the Zimmer's ones. And very often that's almost exactly the same : "Day One" in the beginning ; "Barbossa Is Hungry" or the Beckett's Death music in "I Don't Think Now Is the Best Time" is steel for the climax of potc5...<br><br>So, i'm nor waiting the soundtrack anymore, maybe IF there is some suites in it, but I don't think so... Too Bad. I miss Zimmer and Verbinski ;-(Somebody on Reddit posted that the soundtrack is already on sale at Disneyland.
I loved Chappie . Why didn't he worked with the other composers from the film ?It seems to be a feature film I think but why not work with Zimmer again ?My heart definitely goes out to Zack Snyder, I hope his family will pull through. Regardless of opinion, I think he is an enormously talented director who never got quite as much credit as he deserved.<br><br>Now that Joss Whedon is taking over the finishing touches on Justice League I wonder how this will affect the sound of JXL's music. <br>Where can we find out about deluxe soundtrack releases, for instance if Dunkirk was also released in a "special edition" or whichever, where could I learn or hear about it?Salazar is just another version of Davy Jones and his crew but with no motivation. <br><br>Jerry Bruckheimer -<br><br>Before OST:<br>"Blackbeard is probably the evilest character we've ever had"<br>"It harkens back more the first one."<br>"The beginning of a whole new adventure... a whole new fresh look to the pirates movies"<br>"We've got these two beautiful new characters"<br><br>Before DMTNT<br>"I think Salazar is the head of the family tree of the previous villains. He is the most frightening weíve ever had because heís merciless."<br>"What's fresh about this is the fact we're introducing these new characters"<br>"It's so fresh, so different, so scary"<br><br>
Well for me sadly it is just a reminder of how great the original trilogy was. The best things in this movie are the returning characters, and the returning love theme from At World's End. Aside from that, it's just like the 4th movie: another forgettable round in the same old attraction. Except this time there are some naval battles, so at least it looks like a pirates movie, which makes it just a little better than the 4th one. But still far, far below the first 3 movies.Just saw the film. Was great by the way, much much beter than On Stranger Tides. Now on the score: I'm not blow away by it (Not all the new theme's are great) BUT... First the new theme for Carina and the stars is by far the best new thing in the pirates soundtrack universe. It's beautiful, something new and adventurous. The new adventure theme is actually a new variation on He's a Pirate or Jack's theme (can't really tell, need to here it again.) which has been used a lot in previous films during the action sequences. First time i heard it, it thought it was a little bit simple and unoriginal but hearing it for a multiple times in the film I really started to like it! It's good they made something new to use during the action sequences instead of the overused he's a pirate or jack's theme, It gives the movie it's own voice.<br><br>Salazar's theme was for me the most dissapointing, it sounded too much like Davy Jones and his crew, also I don't even remember it. Missed opportunity over here. But what really stood out for me are the old themes. Dear lord I got goosebumps at the end when One Day (Will & Elizabeth's theme from Pirates 3) is used, it's emotional and epic. Also the beginning of the movie has a some tragic variations of Will and Elizaberh theme from Pirates 3. Hopefully this will be on the soundtrack! Also somethimes the Marry Me suite is used shortly for Henry during action moments. <br><br>It's amazing to see that these themes, made 10 years ago, still have there effect as they are used in a new movie (it also helpes ofcourse that storylines from At World's End finally pay off in this film) and they are used in a proper way, they always fit the scene in this movie (not like in On Stranger Tides we're theme's are used in scenes that didn't have a connection to it at all). I really hope the score album will make a good represention of this films complete soundtrack, waiting another multiple years for a complete score? (the opening track in this film for exemple, or that short little string piece when Carina appolizes to Henry) I don't think I can do that. Looking forward to friday to hear what they will give us.Amazon has it listed for this Friday, May 26th.well... yeah. that's the purpose of film music... complement the images, not just being there... I had read that review, but only that critic I've seen trash the music as well...<br><br>But don't go to far.. that's exactly the type of criticism is being thrown at Spielberg/Williams lately.. and if you don't believe me, just search for WarHorse reviews.<br><br>That folkes, are how 80s and 90s film music used to work.Genius, to be fair, the score for At World's End got some, not a lot, but some nasty reviews as well, and for similar "reasons" as well: too loud, too bombastic, saying more than what's happening on the screen, etc. I think we just need to listen to the score and watch the movie to see for ourselves... because if anyone is like me, I love all the scores and movies except for On Stanger Tides... regardless of the poor reviews. I've been wrong before though lol
"Geoff Zanelliís score is one of the most annoying of recent memory, but maybe itís not the composerís fault. For slow, dull action scenes he scores loud, propulsive music to make the audience think itís seeing something that isnít there. We get the horns of profundity and the strings of sincerity, not to mention the soaring choruses that tell us that grand things are really happening now, oh boy ó and that these people are really feeling something ó and arenít we privileged to be swept away on this epic of joy and adventure? . . . And none of it is on the screen."<br><br>...<br><br>" In the midst of all the galloping, carousing and general crazy hysteria of the movie, the score by Geoff Zanelli acts as a metaphor for the movie itself, working so hard to inspire feeling, but sounding like clanging desperation instead."<br><br>Score getting hammered as well. =<br><br><br>Anyone know when the soundtrack will be released? I'd assume the day of the film's release, May 26, but usually the series' soundtracks have been released earlier. I haven't seen anything for the soundtrack on iTunes, which is a bit concerning.Any news what Oats is ??? And is Zimmer doing it alsoLoving it - I enjoy every momentIt amaze me how volatile we as an audience are.<br>First we love an actor for being good, new, and fresh. Then by that, that actor keeps doing what we love him for... then we get bored and then we hate him and doom him for being what he "has become"...<br><br>suddenly he is a "bad" actor, just for keeping doing what made him a good actor in the first place.<br><br>Yes, we are also part of why hollywood is what it is now. We all are part of the same game of shallowness.

I'm surprised Tom Howe isn't on the album cover. He's supposed to be doing a lot apparently.

Peters882017-05-10 08:51:46
Where did you read this ? Are you saying that he came in a re wrote it ?whomis he anyway!

Micheal2017-05-10 12:16:19
So Howe is the co composer?

Joseph Solano2017-05-13 01:38:48
@Peters88 and @Michael The director tweeted a picture of Williams and Howe together saying he's providing additonal music. Not in the traditional RCP way, but like Danny Elfman with Age of Ultron. He's practically a co-composer.

Ando2017-05-13 04:21:27
Ant find that tweet anywhere ?

rockhound2017-05-13 06:11:02
on hows website he is just listed as additional composer, but on Hate From A Distance and A Most Peculiar Man it is listed as "co-write with Harry Gregson-Williams". so why should he get a co-composer credit on the front cover, when he is listed just as additional composer on his own website?

Joseph Solano2017-05-13 17:33:41
I looked everywhere. But nothing. Now I look crazy.

I'm guessing this is not going to be a complete score.

Anonymous2017-05-10 15:56:59
Complete score? No shit Sherlock

JBSO992017-05-10 17:09:21
Why they have to add a song, that will probably be boring, instead of introducing more score in the album? I don't understand this kind of things

Edmund Meinerts2017-05-11 02:56:24
Because 90% of people who buy the album will be doing so for the song

Waymann2017-05-11 08:36:20
Also Sia again ? I think at this point she can release another album with all the songs from the films she's been doing lately...

Hari Haran2017-05-12 19:15:34
Edmund- I'm pretty sure the theme alone will do most of the marketing pull. It's ridiculous how popular it's become. I don't regret it at all. :D

PetersUr2017-05-04 20:51:35
Thank goodness !!!no drones and boring electronics then

Ds2017-05-04 22:51:20
Lol... like The Boss Baby is full of droning ? Like there is any droning in Hacksaw Ridge? Like a track as "This is my world" from BvS is full of electronics? Just because a composer is capable of writing electronic music doesnt mean he only does that.

Edmund Meinerts2017-05-04 23:12:24
There's quite a bit of droning in Hacksaw Ridge, especially the track of that name.

Anonymous2017-05-05 07:00:51
Indeed. And BossBaby sounds all fake synthy too in most places.

PetersMusic2017-05-05 08:40:01
He isn't a very good composer . Nothing original

Ds2017-05-05 13:04:09
OK, fair enough for Hacksaw Ridge. Maybe Mazzaro is responsible for that track after all... or maybe not. Time will tell.

But what's wrong with sounding synthy? Aside from the fact that you personally don't like synths, of course.

rockhound2017-05-05 15:00:03
it sounds often just cheap and it also doesnt make sense to use a full orchestra, that sounds in the end like synths. then why hiring a full orchestra and waste alot of money?

Edmund Meinerts2017-05-05 16:30:59
I have no problem with synths. I do have a problem with scores that use synths to try and fake the sound of an orchestra - ESPECIALLY when there's more than enough money to get the real thing. The absolute worst thing is when they actually do get an orchestra, but then cover it up with synths anyway. Hans and the RC guys can be really bad about that sometimes. There's a certain charm to his earlier work where that was done mostly for budgetary reasons, but now that he's the biggest composer on the planet there's absolutely no excuse. Except, of course, that he gets too attached to the sounds of his own keyboards. :p

JBSO992017-05-05 17:09:11
So electronics sounding like orchestra is a bda thing? What about TRON Legacy? Because I'm pretty sur many parts were synth strings and so and it sounded amazing. Also, they manage to mix synths and real orchestra at parts (I think in Flynn Lives) and they nailed it!

JBSO992017-05-05 17:10:17
bad*
sure*
Sorry for the typos...

Gustic62017-05-05 19:47:36
There are good sounding synths ..... and cheap sounding ! Zimmer always used to sound original and then the likes of a Chappie started sounding not like hi and generic

Edmund Meinerts2017-05-05 23:03:14
Tron Legacy is a pretty bad example to be honest, because that score is great at keeping things clean. The orchestra is clearly an orchestra that is allowed to breathe organically, and the synths are clearly synths and have their own very distinctive textures and colors. None of this muddy mixing of the two in the middle somewhere that Zimmer likes to do.

If there's synths in there to specifically replace or sound like the orchestra, I missed them.

mpolonest123 2017-05-06 00:50:10
I don't understand the hate that Mazzaro gets (although I'm personally biased because I love synth scores and think Chappie is a masterpiece) and he has shown a great knack for writing purely orchestral music. Joseph Trapanese on the other hand.....

Something like Chappie is definitely a throwback to Vangelis, where you do get that "faux-orchestra" synth soundscape. IMO Chappie is a great example of Zimmer doing a largely synth score correctly, as opposed to Inferno which conceptually was interesting but came out as a mess.

JBSO992017-05-06 12:08:55
I think the hate he gets it's in part from the people who feels like he doesn't have a proper own voice and he, most of the times, he just produces synths and so. For me Chappie had some very good parts, but at other parts I felt like I was listening to some noises, but then you have tracks like The Outside Is Temporary or We Own This Sky and this are truly great themes.
Also the tracks from Man of Steel & Batman v Superman were his name appears are some of the best of the albums, so I think it depends on what he is working on

Peteu2017-05-06 12:39:33
Hans needs to get back to working with people like Balfe. Actual composers - . Really looking forward to hear the wonder woman theme again in this film .

Hybrid Soldier2017-05-06 12:46:23
You might want to hold on regarding HZ's theme... I spoke with a bunch of people who worked on that score and the theme only appears a couple of times, it's not central or anything.

Everan2017-05-06 15:56:34
The theme is still in so that's great! Musical continuity is always a win.

Mike2017-05-06 16:15:39
That's a shame if that is true about the theme . Even the trailers are now strongly
Using the theme . It would be a mistake not to use it

Hedon2017-05-08 15:20:52
They should have gotten Steve Mazzaro to score it. Then the theme would certainly be used a lot, as Steve is very close to both Hans and Tina Guo who performed the theme in BvS. And we know Steve can create epic sounding music.

Hybrid Soldier2017-05-08 15:53:53
You don't get it, they don't use the theme much because it just doesn't work...

Honestly, think a second and try to develop that "theme" ! It's impossible !! It's not even a theme, it was just an action cue motif, an "announcement" of WW in Bat v Sup... It got popular but apart from an action scene, you can't do anything with it ! And Warner tried, believe me !!

Martiane2017-05-08 17:32:45
They are using it on every advert and trailer for the film . In my opinion , there is a lot you can do with Zimmers theme. It's one of the most memorable super hero themes in recent years. It's like The Terminator theme - powerful

Mephariel2017-05-08 18:50:04
The problem is, it is not a theme that can you easily transition in and out of. You can play it and play it...but that it.

Hybrid Soldier2017-05-08 19:36:12
Exactly, you can't slow it down, you can't really rearrange it...

mpolonest123 2017-05-08 20:07:49
You can hear the theme being played on strings at the very end of the "Alley Fight" clip they released.

I'm sure the WW theme will be worked in at the right moments (for sure the end credits) but Hybrid is right in it not being a developed idea. What I'm personally curious about is what tone the score will take, considering DC is trying to shoot for a lighter feel.

forced2017-05-08 20:11:32
Hybrid's right, it's a riff, not a theme. It was cool in context.

In the trailer it sounded forced in.

Edmund Meinerts2017-05-09 00:05:42
In full agreement with Hybrid. It's a cool riff for an action cue...but can you hear that theme being twisted into something that's quiet, intimate and emotional? Or stirring and heroic? It would be cool to hear them try, but honestly the best composer in the world wouldn't be able to make that sound natural.

David2017-05-09 00:33:01
Respectfully Hybrid, I disagree about slowing it down! Remember the scene when Diana is in her hotel room and Bruce emails her the photo of her and the rest of the files? Her theme is playing and it's slowed down. And it really works! At least I think it does. I think it sounds great :D

I hope this is as good as Hacksaw Ridge was. I loved this score and it looks like Rupert is able to create great heoric themes and good action themes (well, in this one he will use th Wonder Woman theme I suppose)

Edmund Meinerts2017-05-04 16:36:38
I hope it's as good as the second half of Hacksaw Ridge. First half was not that interesting to me. :p

JBSO992017-05-04 21:54:02
Well, yeah. The first part had some beautiful themes like Climbing for a Kiss, but the true highlights were in the second half. I specially love I Can't Hear You, Praying & Historical Footage.

By the way, I love the new cover of the album!
