If the Snyder Cut comes out, who's ready to hear Junkie XL score Godzilla vs. Kong?

Edmund Meinerts2020-09-19 11:07:05
No way. After what Bear McCreary did on King of the Monsters last year I definitely want him back.

MrZimmerFan2020-09-19 11:26:45
I open to ANY composer in this movies.

To answer the question, YES, i'm ready

Specially to a guy, who loves G14, KSi and KOTM

superultramegaa2020-09-19 15:59:18
Yeah... McCreary's score is one of the best from last year so I'd rather have him again.

Hybrid Soldier2020-09-19 18:03:16
But the film was particularly bad...

So I rather have a whole other team do something ELSE lol...

Miralsice2020-09-19 19:14:07
It's true, there is completely different team from composer to director in crossover :)

Mephariel2020-09-20 01:04:37
Yeah besides the massive disappointment that is the movie Godzilla: King of the Monsters, the even bigger disappointment is that Bear McCreary won't be back for more.

Moggyman2020-09-20 04:35:21
Bear McCreary is a good composer but all he did for Godzilla KOTM was modernize the original Godzilla theme, which isnt super creative. Junkie, on the other hand, may give us a really creative score based on his eagerness to do the project.

MrZimmerFan2020-09-20 20:17:27
I disagree, the McCreary's score in that movie is really, really good... but I put this, as myself i listen very often the other two: G14 and Skull Island, also really, really good, can't put a score over another because one composer uses a theme (a very mytical one, if you are a movie monster fan), specially in that franchise.

Yes, Ifukube create a wonderful theme (and the original movie have a really tough score to listen isolated of the movie), but other composer make a wonderful themes (and polaraising), like Otani (which his score for GMK is FULL electronic, but really good) or Oshima (great theme, maybe the inspiration for Desplat's theme), even the most forgotten Reijiro Koroku create a terrific theme for the character in 1984

iamtommie442020-09-20 20:17:54
@Moggyman

If you think that all McCreary did was modernize the Godzilla theme, you clearly haven't listend to the score.
He indeed used and modernized the themes for Godzilla & Mothra.
Besides that he wrote new themes for Rodan, Ghidorah, Monarch, The Russel Family and a theme he called the Ancient theme.

Besides this, he used the orchestra, choir, soloist and specialty instruments in the best way they can be used.

His score was one of the best blockbuster and orchestral scores of the last couple of years, in my opinion.

Until I hear Holkenborg's score I can't really comment on if it will be good. But at the moment I am sad McCreary isn't coming back. But I am very curious what Holkenborg will do

MrZimmerFan2020-09-20 20:29:58
Before someone jump, i will said in this kind of movies, change a composer is very common, don't say i don't want McCreary will be back, only i prefer other people try other things.

Like i said, i listen very OFTEN the three scores in this movies, and i love each style (as for the movies... well, prefer G14 and KSI over KOTM)

Moggyman2020-09-21 02:28:03
I wouldn't disagree that Godzilla KOTM is a good score since it works very well for the movie and by itself. I'm just saying that Junkie XL can bring something new and interesting to the franchise which hasn't been done before.

Medigo2020-09-21 09:26:19
I do kinda prefer the 2014 score over the KOTM score, but McCreary's work does deserve more love than just being called a 'retreat of the original theme'.
It also deserved to be heard more, but the movie's sound mixing was terrible.

MrZimmerFan2020-09-21 10:54:01
Yes, the sound mixing in the movie is bad, you can't listen the music properly, is buried under a lot of sound effects.

It was one of those situations where 'the music is trying to overlook the thunderous sound effects',

johny555 reply Replies: 13 || 2020-09-17 22:29:11
@Hybrid, I was always wondering, what happened to composers like Thomas Farnon, Jasha Klebe or Christian Vorlander - why are they not working with Lorne/Junkie anymore? Did they get fired or did they just move on? I find it weird, that Lorne/Rupert/Junkie/Etc would fire their additional composers after all those years of collaboration.

Hybrid Soldier2020-09-17 22:45:10
Fired ?!

Haha no.

You gotta realize being an additional composer is not exactly an easy thing. Some jump ship after a few years or have other aspirations, try to work solo and so on.

Vörlander worked for Junkie from 2010 to 2015, then started his own business of writing for commercials, trailers etc. (it's called 2WEI, in Germany) He even did keep working on some trailers for JXL's scores after that, or helped on FIFA 17. Junkie had Aljoscha Christenhuß who worked for him from 2015 to 2018. Then Antonio jointed in 2016, Sara Barone joined more recently last year.

Thomas is doing his own thing too, he founded Chromium Music and is doing some solo projects now.

Jasha, after working for Lorne & Hans, "transfered" to Bleeding Fingers but after a while left to focus on his own solo career too.

Ultimately, everyone leaves, sooner or later... :)

johny5552020-09-17 22:46:55
Oh I see, very interesting! Many thanks for the answer :)

Hybrid Soldier2020-09-17 22:49:25
Interestingly, Aljoscha is collaborating a lot with 2WEI these days. The Junkie Team reassembles ! lol

johny5552020-09-17 22:57:16
That´s why I asked myself, why dont they ever re-unite like before, so yea, they sometimes do

Alucard2020-09-18 00:45:31
Tom's more recent work has received more love, but I personally love the Fury Road and Rise of an Empire type soundtrack more. I'm looking forward to this and I hope it's close to what Man of Steel and Dawn of Justice sounded like. Although, the snippet he shared doesn't really sound like it. We'll see.

Mephariel2020-09-18 01:24:12
I missed Jasha Klebe. I thought he did some really good stuff at Bleeding Fingers. I am looking forward to hearing more from Kara Talve. I think she is a really good talent.

What happened to Marc Streitenfeld? I was going to ask about Klaus Badelt, but I am pretty sure I am not going to get that story.

Hybrid Soldier2020-09-18 12:47:27
Marc just reunited with Ridley on the amazing Raised By Wolves series.

Klaus is more worried about his other businesses rather than film scoring, I think...

But Marc is no longer with RCP I am assuming. His scores are not advertised here.

Hybrid Soldier2020-09-18 23:18:58
Marc left RCP in like... 2003 ? lol

And yes he is, check his page, he just doesn't have much going on anyway.

Anonymous2020-09-18 23:34:31
Atli Örvarsson, Heitor Pereira, Guillaume Roussel and Nathan Stornetta ?

Hybrid Soldier2020-09-18 23:46:15
Atli still has his studio at Remote but mostly works from home in Iceland.

Guillaume game back to settle to Remote a couple of years ago (before he was splitting time between RCP & France).

Heitor still is at RCP as far as I know, haven't heard anything in a while.

Nathan Stornetta left Remote in 2015 (against Hans' will !! :)) cause he didn't fancy much that whole Hollywood business. He is home in Switzerland doing his own projects, but also touring with Hans...

SPECTER 2020-09-21 03:38:59
Are Steve Jablonsky and Rupert Greyson-Williams still apart of RCP or they went solo too?

J.R. reply Replies: 1 || 2020-09-19 19:55:32
In a recent interview, Junkie mentioned that he's bringing back themes for Superman and Wonder Woman, while everything else is new. I wonder if he's gonna make a new Batman theme.

So this confirms that the music from the Snyder panel at the first FanDome was in fact Junkie’s!

Everan2020-09-12 19:29:10
Now that's a powerful theme

Hybrid Soldier2020-09-12 19:43:41
I like that it uses the Hero Fight from BvS in it, but in a more heroic / lighter mode.

I mean in BvS the fight was very dark, given the circumstances of the fight !

MrZimmerFan2020-09-12 19:55:58
Quite like it!

I can't wait to listen a full soundtrack

mpolonest123 2020-09-12 20:17:39
It’s really cool, I like that it is going for a more “Heroic” sound.

Just went back and rewatched the Snyder panel, if you listen closely throughout there is music playing in the background that is 100% Tom’s. Probably around 6-7 minutes from the score.

It sounds like a mix of Mad Max with heavy percussion, some emotional ambient/guitar portions, and his usual string patterns.

Scorefan2020-09-12 23:50:20
Now that's a justice league theme music

Makooti2020-09-14 10:04:27
Yeesh. That's not supposed to be the main theme, is it?

Sounds more painfully generic than most of Elfman's score, I'm sorry. I don't see what the fuss is here.

Randy Watson2020-09-14 10:29:18
It's as generic as it is forgettable. I listened to it a few times now but every time it's over, I've already forgotten what it sounds like.

Eobard2020-09-14 21:19:39
@Randy Watson Don't worry man it's just a 1 minute snippet and its been confirmed that the The Snyder Cut will be 4 hours long so the 1st official music release could be around at least 2 hours long I think, so just relax & trust him. And till then you can try Tom's other work if you haven't eg. Mortal Engines (2018), Brimstone (2016), Run All Night (2015) these are some of my favorites

antonius 2020-09-14 21:22:27
Sounds like “Raising The Sword” from Alita!

Makooti2020-09-15 20:04:02
@Eobard
I dunno, man. I've been warming up to the guy recently between Mortal Engines, Sonic, Scoob, and hell I'm one of the mad men that actually liked the Deadpool soundtrack.

But this sounds exactly like how I was WORRIED Justice League would sound back when Tom was first announced as the solo composer after Zimmer announced his superhero sabbatical. So all the "tHiS iS wHaT a ReAl SuPeRhErO sCoRe ShOuLd SoUnD lIkE" hubbub really rubs me the wrong way.

But fair point about the runtime. Hopefully there'll be more to it than this one WIP of synths and samples.

Scorefan2020-09-15 22:19:56
Remember Tom wrote some cues for the movie before he was erased by Wheedon. He is no starting from zero. He will develop some themes from Man of Steel and Batman v Superman.

Hybrid Soldier2020-09-15 23:25:36
Yeah but I'm also pretty sure he's changing a lot of things.

Take Steppenwolf, he was working on the compromised version, I'm pretty sure he's gonna scrap that and rewrite a new theme for him... We'll probably never know ! :)

mpolonest123 2020-09-16 18:45:45
@Makooti

That’s fair, I think it’s less about “this is the definitive superhero sound” and more just the appropriate sound for this established universe. Danny Elfman’s score, separate from the film it was attached to, isn’t necessarily bad. It just never fit the established tone or even the visual style of the film. At the very least Tom will deliver something that sounds like a continuation of MoS and BvS.

What excites me the most, personally, is whatever adjustments he’ll make to the music that was originally written back in 2016/2017. In the past few years Tom’s writing style has improved leaps above what he put out in 2014-2017. And if Conrad Pope is involved in some form or another that would be a good omen as well.

Hybrid Soldier2020-09-16 18:50:58
Well the big difference I think is 2014-17 he was assisted by Christian Vorländer, which was much more "electronic" like Tom himself...

Since 2017 a lot of the work is done with Antonio Di Iorio, which explains it's going more orchestral.

mpolonest123 2020-09-16 18:58:13
@HybridSoldier
That’s completely true. Do you think we will ultimately get a hybrid of Tom’s original score mixed with whatever else he is writing currently?

He says in the preview that there is much more to write, which is interesting considering the original cut was supposedly “mostly done”...

Hybrid Soldier2020-09-16 19:07:06
Well since the thing is completely going to be re-edited (series format, probably 4h movie after), lots of scenes added & altered (something even if Snyder had stayed in 2017, he couldn't have done freely), a lot of work to be done for sure.

Writing new cues, maybe changing others completely. Rewriting with all the edits probably making scenes longer etc.

You probably have the core of the score, the themes, the big ideas & cues done, but you have to readapt it almost completely ! And, as I said, in 3 years, maybe Tom can listen to something he wrote 3 years ago and go "ok, I got that completely wrong, let's try something else."

mpolonest123 2020-09-16 19:26:52
Interesting! It sounds like he’s almost starting from the ground up, which actually might end up sounding better than what we would’ve gotten had the original film been released in 2017.

I’m also interested in the theme suites/sketchbooks he wrote back then, and if they will still be used as a basis for the score. Either way the end result is gonna be cool I feel, hopefully we get a great score release from WaterTower!

Scorefan2020-09-16 22:21:51
@Hybrid besides Tom style, do you like the more orchestral style with Di Lorio or the more electronic style with Vorlander?

Hybrid Soldier2020-09-17 17:48:31
Tom's interview kinda exactly confirms what I said ! lol

"Besides the Man of Steel theme for Superman and the theme for Wonder Woman, which I have given a new spin, all the other themes for this movie are brand new,” he revealed. “Some of them I did the groundwork on four years ago, but as you grow as a composer, you look at what you did and maybe have a better way of doing it now or a better idea. It was inspiring. I would get an idea in my downtime and think, ‘Oh, let’s rework this thing. Let’s do that.’ Because I knew for a while that this was coming, I had the time and space to shape it into its best possible form."

MrZimmerFan2020-09-17 18:19:46
Also, a bit of GvK:

'A perfect example is the Godzilla vs. Kong movie that is coming out next year,” he enthused. “I’m such a Godzilla freak. I have all the Japanese versions of the movies. At a certain point, just for s**ts and giggles, I wrote something for Godzilla. About two years ago, I met the director because he showed interest in me as a composer. I asked him, ‘Do you know I’m the biggest Godzilla fan on the planet, and, years ago, I wrote some stuff.’ He was like, ‘You’re kidding me?’ So we started communicating, I tweaked what I did, played it for him, and he was totally in love.”

MrZimmerFan2020-09-17 18:20:55
And this

“On Godzilla vs. Kong, I said, ‘I think we need the biggest bass drum on the planet for this score. I know the guy who can build it, what do you think?’ They just said, ‘Let’s do it.’ So I said I want a bass drum that is at least eight feet in diameter,” he laughed. “The guy called me back, and he asked, ‘Is it okay if it’s only six?’ I said, ‘Could we do eight? Why can’t we do ten?’ The answer was, ‘Well, there’s simply no cow alive that has a skin big enough to cover for a ten-foot bass drum.’ So, we have to scale it down to eight.

Moggyman2020-09-17 19:06:16
Junkie's score for GvK is probably going to be better than his score for Justice League if he is that interested in doing a score for a godzilla movie.

Miralsice2020-09-17 21:31:59
"Besides the Man of Steel theme for Superman and the theme for Wonder Woman, which I have given a new spin, all the other themes for this movie are brand new,”

I hope Tom just forget to mention about Batman's theme and will reuse it too, because if he don't, then what's the point of it?

Miralsice2020-09-17 21:52:41
*forgot to mentioned

Hybrid Soldier2020-09-17 21:57:39
The theme he was supposed to write but didn't ? :D lol

Well don't take word for word what he says. He's being general, the interview was for Forbes afterall.

Just take the extract we got, it had a quote from BvS that had nothing to do with either Superman or Wonder Woman... lol

Is the music from the beginning of this clip Junkie’s? It sounds like a mix of 300 and Alita.

it very well could be, i personally didnt even think of that tbh or notice it

mpolonest123 2020-08-26 20:22:21
Didn’t even notice this before but you might be right. Everything from the percussion down to the sound design samples and brass library definitely sound like Holkenborg. If it’s not him then it is a great imitation!

I'm probably one of only 6 people on the planet who really likes Danny Elfman's score, but I can't wait to hear Junkie XL's.

HunterTech2020-08-24 04:49:45
There being potentially 3-4 hours of it is probably gonna lead to making a playlist heavily cutting it down to the highlights. But it's my primary excitement for the SC, since I'm really curious to see what Holkenborg does on his own with these characters and HZ's previous material.

GermanRCPFan2020-08-24 11:38:10
I hope Tom bring back all or most of characters themes (WW, Batman, Sups, Aquaman, Lex) and bring some new material for Cyborg, Darkseid.
In Eflman's score I don't remember any good themes in at all.

mpolonest123 2020-08-23 17:04:48
So much better than Joss Whedon’s IMO.

Since it’ll be split into four-hour long episodes (with a “complete” version also available) we’ll be getting at least four hours of Tom’s music. I have a feeling it’s going to be epic!

More info about the status of the score from Zack Snyder yesterday :

"Have you heard Junkie XL's soundtrack ?"

Snyder : "I have heard a lot of it. He's working like a maniac right now. You know because there's a ton that we had, already done, but there's a ton more of the movie that we need to detail out. I talked to him, I was on the phone with him this morning, frankly we were just going about "Oh we gonna make sure this ! And that moment ! We gotta have this happen and that !" and so, yeah he and I are jazz and we are working like maniacs. He is so inspired, it's just awesome to hear him on the phone, he's just gonna do something amazing."

I’m hoping that, due to the nature of this release, we might get soundtrack “Volumes” in the vein of other streaming releases. Supposedly HBO Max is looking to put out ZSJL in an episodic format to compliment the length of the project.

Anything that gets the most music out there of course...

NotSoAnonymous2020-07-26 20:22:43
I wouldn't be surprised if we do, honestly, if they decide to go down the episodic format. I would be happy to have volume releases for 'Justice League' in the same vein as HBO's 'Watchmen'.

Clark5952020-07-27 10:20:25
Awesome News!
Since it is an entirely new Movie, can we have a dedicated page for it?
Can’t wait to hear what Tom has concocted for The Flash!
And of course can’t wait to hear more of HZ’s Superman Theme (Batman and WW too 😜)

Mephariel2020-07-27 18:13:31
Is Zimmer involved in this in any way? Or is it purely Junkie XL's team?

Hybrid Soldier2020-07-28 10:31:52
No idea !

JohnF2020-08-20 22:57:22
Any word if there will be a soundtrack release for the Snyder cut?

Something is coming, Junkie XL aka Tom just posted this

#ReleaseTheSnyderCut

tilibro2019-11-18 09:30:52
Gal and Ben also announced their support for the Snyder Cut!

Anonymous2019-11-18 14:18:37
Even Snyder himself just tweeted it.

I bet the score of this version would be way better because Junkie/Zimmer worked on Batman, Man Of Steel and the Wonder Woman theme

What Elfman did was terrible butchering and ignoring all the themes and tonality of all the previous hero scores.

Ahmad2019-11-18 14:57:14
LOL! The only thing that’s coming is his brass library which he has been working on for quite some time.

Xavi2019-11-18 19:26:11
"LOL" Relax, Ahmad.

People are working really hard to release the movie and with it will come Junkie's score too.

MrZimmerFan2019-11-18 19:57:23
In a year, like Enos says

Ahmad2019-11-18 22:19:05
@Xavi I know. I also want the Snyder’s cut and JXL’s score to be released, but setting up expectations about the score when it’s clear that Tom’s post has nothing to do it is just kinda unnecessary.

Eobard2019-11-18 22:30:38
@Ahmad well my bad! I didn't know about this. It was just his post came at a time like this so...
Sorry guys.

Hybrid Soldier2019-11-18 22:47:32
Well for sure it became the worst timing ever for Tom...

He must be watching twitter sweating right now lol. Totally cornered...

Ahmad2019-11-19 01:33:18
don’t worry about it @Eobard
With the timing, I would’ve thought the same if I didn’t already know about the brass library :)

Omar2019-11-21 01:49:43
Tom's score for Justice League was basically a mix of Mad Max and Deadpool. Zack wanted to go with a different approach for the score and make it more "fun" than serious. He didn't want a Zimmer sound for the movie.

Knight2019-11-21 10:05:29
Citation needed

Ds2019-11-21 11:47:20
Omar: Well tried, but Junkie XL was replaced after Snyder was fired and Whedon came in.
And just in case Snyder actually wanted another sound, he would just have told Junkie at the beginning instead of firing him after he departed himself :-p

Ahmad2019-11-22 00:57:44
@Ds Omar is saying that this was the direction Tom went with / what the score sounded like not that he was fired because he didn’t deliver the sound he’s known for :)
Of course he was replaced after Snyder left the project.

And yeah citation is needed.

Junk is XL2019-11-22 14:45:33
Did Holkenborg finish his score and have time to record it? Is there an actual score? It seems to me he got jettisoned early in the process when Whedon came on board. It would be surprising if he had time to record an actual score with players and an orchestra.

Ahmad2019-11-23 01:55:53
He said in a recent interview that the score exists “full tracks”. Who knows how much of it was ready considering he probably left the project before the cut was finalized - so probably nothing was recorded. But knowing how Tom likes to do things and judging by his studio time videos, he can do amazing things with samples. And if it contains lots of sound design then it wouldn’t be far from the final product.

Omar2019-11-25 22:40:03
@Ds & Ahmad. Yeah like Ahmad is saying, the direction Tom took was the direction Snyder wanted, he wasn't "fired" because of his sound. I'm sure Whedon just wanted to work with Elfman because of their past collaborations and comfort. My only source is I used to intern for him during that period of time and Tom showed me a a few parts of the score he was working on (that I mentioned resembled Mad Max and Deadpool) and it was awesome!

Omar2019-11-25 22:51:29
@Junk is XL. Tom finished the score but didn't have the chance to record it

Serg2020-06-14 17:22:28
@Omar Did Tom reuse the previous themes for Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, and Aquaman from the DCEU? That you know of

Knight2020-06-14 17:53:30
From the sound of it, he interned at Tom's studio while he was still making the score, so he couldn't have used the Aquaman theme as that came a year later.

mpolonest123 2020-05-20 20:45:11
@scarecrow9

Yep! It looks like they will essentially be doing post-production work on the film, if Junkie’s music wasn’t recorded yet it probably will be by next year.

Hybrid Soldier2020-05-20 20:50:26
lol @mpolonest123

I should but actually I just rushed to create a new Junkie entry for 2021 : Zack Snyder's Justice League ! 8-)

Amazing, thanks!!! :D

NTNBC2020-05-20 21:32:15
Hybrid, so is Tom scoring it for sure? :D

Hybrid Soldier2020-05-20 21:49:16
Is there any doubt ?

He's scoring Army of the Dead for Zack, you don't think he would tweak a thing or two "on the side" for JL, in case he wasn't finished ? :P

NTNBC2020-05-20 22:24:46
Great! It is just that I still cannot believe this is happening.

Cannot wait to listen to JXL's score.

Hybrid Soldier2020-05-22 11:37:40
Only things I can say about the whole Hans / Superheroes / Justice League thing from a few years ago, or why Hans didn't want to return for JL, is simply because he didn't like doing Batman again. Just too weird, being committed to the TDK trilogy for so many years and have to redo it.

But the good part for him in BVS was that without it, no Wonder Woman, and he's glad to be expanding that since he was so close to production of the first score and did WW84.

But it's not like there was a problem with Snyder or Superheroes in general, more like just "Please, I'm done with Batman" ! :D

As for Tom's score for Justice League, Hans had not heard it, but he knew Tom was proud of it. So yeah, I'm glad we'll finally see that happening. Hans wrote enough material for Superman, Batman, WW and other themes in these movies, I'm sure Tom could have a lot of fun using all that and add his own touch. I honestly don't know if it was really finished or not, recorded, even partially (BVS was recorded in august/september 2015, 6 months before the film was released, and the score was reworked until the very end for the Ultimate Edition). Wait & see !

Bill Koufo 2020-05-22 15:43:48
It would be cool if Junkie has the chance to use Rubert's Aquaman theme as well now that we have it. It would make the score feel even more complete!

mpolonest123 2020-05-22 16:16:39
It’s encouraging to know that Tom was proud of this score, as excited as I am to hear his reuse of themes I am just as excited to see what new ideas he came up with for the project.
Someone who supposedly heard a bit of the music on here (I think they worked as his assistant) said it sounded a bit like Fury Road and Deadpool mixed, but who knows.

If the score hasn’t been recorded yet my personal wish is for Conrad Pope to be involved somehow lol

Dudu2020-05-22 16:56:14
@Hybrid to what extent was HZ involved on the first Wonder Woman?
He said in an interview for WW84 that he was reluctant to accept because he had « fought hard to get Rupert the gig »
Is it a case of the producers/director wanted him and he said « I can’t do it but Ruper can »? And was the first one a mess, hence the fact that RGW isn’t scoring the sequel?

Hybrid Soldier2020-05-22 17:52:43
Mmmh yeah let's say he acted like a music producer until Rupert was in, even as early as 2016 (right after BVS) he met with Patty Jenkins, he was never gonna do it because he was on tour anyway but he had the ideas as to who could/should score it. He had many ideas, submitted names etc.

Rupert got the gig in the end. Rupert I think could actually have come back to WW84, WW was a tough project but there was no problem (hell, he nailed it with Aquaman too, which was much easier cause there was no "legacy" to follow), but it really is Hans who showed interest to actually do it. Hans got really attached to Wonder Woman, playing the theme in his 2017 Live Tour. I think he wanted more than be the "WW Theme Writer", he wanted to have a full WW score.

Neptune2020-05-22 18:47:21
Any idea when can we expect a track list of Tom's score ?

Dudu2020-05-22 20:56:16
Thanks for the great insight as always Hybrid!

superultramegaa2020-05-25 01:00:22
So why exactly did Hans fight for Rupert with Wonder Woman and why is he scoring '84? Not criticizing, I just remember him thinking that it was better for more women to be involved as composers or performers on Wonder Woman projects.

I don't even necessarily agree with the concept that a woman needs to score a movie about women, I'm just curious why he wanted Rupert in and why he himself took over for the sequel if he felt that way?

Hybrid Soldier2020-05-25 13:05:01
Because there was no time for him to do WW 1.

He was on tour for months... Had 2 tours in early 2016/17 + Dunkirk to handle. Wouldn't have worked at all.

vced2020-05-25 17:41:09
Hybrid why is Hans taking on so many projects this year? Any insights into that?

Mephariel2020-05-25 20:12:43
I don't think originally Hans planned it that way.

Wonder Woman 1984 was supposed to come out November 2019. That didn't happen. No Time to Die wasn't on the radar originally and was originally supposed to come November 2019 as well. He was probably on track to finish Top Gun: Maverick early this year if it wasn't for No Time to Die.

If you take out WW84 and No Time to Die, he would only have 4 major projects this year (Spongebob, Dune, Hillbilly, and Top Gun).

mpolonest123 2020-04-07 18:15:18
@Hybrid
Snyder said on Vero a while back that the score was fully complete. Did Tom record with an orchestra or was it just the demos?

I have a good feeling we’ll see Snyder’s vision sooner or later, it seems like the push from the fans/celebs has genuinely had an impact.

Hybrid Soldier reply Replies: 6 || 2019-12-24 15:47:29
On Vero Zack Snyder seemed to confirm that Tom finished the Justice League score, and that he's scoring Army Of The Dead...

superultramegaa2019-12-24 16:19:04
And Danny Elfman seemed to confirm that Zack Snyder never even finished his cut because of his daughter's death. How would Tom finish the score if Zack hadn't even finished the movie?

At this point this entire Snyder Cut situation is just a he said, they said situation. Maybe Elfman is lying, maybe Zack is lying, who knows? We probably never will.

Paul2019-12-24 18:27:33
Danny Elfman is lying because he is confused that's why

HunterTech2019-12-24 21:51:54
Elfman only ever got to know the Whedon side of the production, hence being so unsure when asked. I doubt anyone hired to replace someone would look at the work that was previously done.

Ds2019-12-24 22:02:22
Elfman is not exactly "lying", he's just repeating the official version that was served by WB to save the face when they fired Snyder and hired Whedon to erase 2/3 of his work and replace it by Marvel stock jokes shot in front of a green screen with bored actors.

Hybrid Soldier2019-12-24 23:12:39
Elfman has no idea. Afterall he's part of the "Destruction Team", why would he go against the narrative ? He came on board to score a film, it's not like he was shown what they rejected...

And between trusting Joss Whedon, Danny Elfman, Toby Emmerich & Geoff Johns VS EVERYONE ELSE who worked on that film, my choice is clear.

Eobard2019-12-25 17:52:55
"... Vs EVERYONE ELSE who worked on that film..." hahaa... there's your answer @superultramegaa, couldn't have said it better. And to answer your fancy "who knows"'; Everyone Knows by now. Just go to screenrant dot com & search Justice League. A read through this year articles alone would fill you in with all the elements that were unearthed about the hell of a production this movie has gone through & quite surprisingly this digging was all done by fans, some not so big media trades like screenrant etc. and some frustrated crew members spilling the beans along with Snyder. All those little tid-bits thrown over the course of 2 years have clearly laid out the complete picture for the world & for the big media trades to have a story to write about (worthy enough for a click according to their mindset).

Kyle Webb Watkins reply Replies: 2 || 2019-12-02 01:25:02
It’s ashamed some Williams can be heard in this. I like Elfman but this was just him reusing old themes from the 80’s and reworking the Avengers theme for the entire score. Should have brought Junkie or Balfe or Giacchino.

superultramegaa2019-12-03 02:03:39
What sucks is the composition and orchestration is really good, but there's no memorable new themes! I can't tell you the difference between the Hero and Anti-Hero themes, and I don't think Steppenwolf even has a consistent motif. None that I can hear.

HunterTech2019-12-03 04:26:00
The Hero theme is so simplistic that it'd be hard to somewhat forget if you hear it enough times. I always assumed the MoS Launch temp track from the Anti-Hero theme was supposed to be the villain motif, but having not seen the film doesn't give me a sense on how its utilized.

I think the Flash motif is pretty good as a "running" theme of sorts. And the titular JL theme is fine, if not really strong enough to carry a whole score (though I do like it appearing once the team is presumably fully formed). I haven't any other themes, even though I'm told there's others.

Junk is XL reply Replies: 24 || 2019-11-22 14:56:14
Whedon has his particular tastes which are guaranteed to be more sensible than 'Anonymous' below. This was a case where Snyder was facing an uphill struggle and a personal tragedy. He left the project. Josh came on board and he does not think highly of the RCP school, as anyone with a sensible ear will do. So he hired Elfman who did Age of Ultron for him after Tyler copy-pasted himself too much. It's ironic that fanboys here lambast Elfman for not being Zimmer enough in scope while Tyler does whatever he does, sounding EXACTLY the same on all projects.

But it's also heartening to see that all of the good RCP composers like Jackman, Junk, Balfe are now going for scores that sound a lot like 1990s or 2000s - Silvestri (Jumanji), Jones (Alita), or Shore (Dark Materials), respectively.

superultramegaa2019-11-22 19:51:30
I definitely agree with your last sentence. I really like seeing the RCP composers going back to orchestral splendor and melody. Shame Jablonsky's been MIA because of his family. I would have loved to see him come back with the orchestral, melodic voice that Balfe and Tom have had lately.

Hybrid Soldier2019-11-22 20:05:19
If you ask me, that "personal tragedy" for Snyder, though real, was just an excuse for them to fire him. It was convenient for Warner. They saw his film and they probably got scared it was impossible to sell, too long, too much BvS, too much this, too much that... This irony is now they made a billion with the darkest DC movie ever... Nice call WB... The minute Whedon & Elfman were "in", you understood this film was not Zack Snyder's anymore. This film is so terrible, I rewatched it lately, you can feel pretty much 80% of it is Whedon reshoots (just look for actors that look nothing like themselves when they shot the initial film, "New Haircut" Amy Adams, "Bottox" Batfleck, "Mustache" Cavill... And you can see from miles away how they all act like they don't care, that they hated every minute of reshooting it. I'm really sad Geoff Zanelli had to participate into this travesty, but I hope he got a huge paycheck for the pain ! lol Especially since Geoff was at the very beginning of the DCEU since he started working on ideas with Hans on Man Of Steel, before he left early to handle The Lone Ranger...

#ReleaseTheSnyderCut

Oh and btw Brian Tyler was fired from Avengers 2. And not because of the music he was writing. Whedon brought Elfman at the last minute, first he was "additional music", then "co-composer", if he had, say, one more month, he would have replaced the entirety of Tyler's score... He just didn't get enough time to do that...

Anonymous2019-11-22 22:29:33
Hybrid, any insight into why Tyler was fired from Age of Ultron? I’ve always wondered but have never seen an actual reason. I’ve heard he violated his contract to work on Furious 7 or something?

Just was curious because he still takes full credit for that score, and the more I see of him the more annoyed I get with his arrogant attitude. The dude thinks he’s the greatest thing to ever happen to film scores.

Hybrid Soldier2019-11-22 22:39:44
I won't go further cause it's not exactly the place, but I won't say you're wrong either... :P

Scorefan2019-11-23 00:16:23
@Hybrid, do you think the SnyderCut will release soon?

Hybrid Soldier2019-11-23 00:21:24
I wish !

I have zero info, just following what's happening on social networks like everybody else...

If you asked me last week about it, I'd have told you "Sure, it will happen... in 20 years maybe, but it will happen..."

Now it seems it might be sooner than that... :)

HunterTech2019-11-23 08:45:30
I want the Snyder Cut to release, just so people can finally leave Elfman alone, as I think it's a very likable score when removed of this whole mess (and probably my favorite thing Zanelli has worked on so far).

I actually thought Tyler's original AoU score was his best Marvel work, though basically leaving out Silvestri's theme wasn't the best choice. The final cut of the film didn't do him and Elfman any justice.

Edmund Meinerts2019-11-23 13:07:35
Defending Elfman on HZ.com, HunterTech? You're a brave one...

mpolonest123 2019-11-23 13:23:05
I’m with Hunter on this one. Do I think Elfman’s score is appropriate for the universe they had set up and the style Zack was going for? Not in the slightest. Do I think it’s a fun standalone score with some catchy themes and good action writing? Yeah, I definitely do.

And this coming from a guy who’s been burned out by Elfman in the past decade (Wolfman, Terminator, and Alice notwithstanding)

Hybrid Soldier2019-11-23 13:24:18
Love Danny.

But his Josstice League score is just wrong, and the old Superman / Batman quotes are poorly used and laughable on screen. He's part of that debacle too. He's a key member of Whedon's destruction team.

"Elfman had its chance", 30 years ago, it was perfect then, because it was his Batman universe.

MrZimmerFan2019-11-23 13:51:02
I wish if we have a listen of what Tom write for the movie. As for Elfman's score, is wrong for the movie, but for a standalone listen, is good.

superultramegaa2019-11-23 19:12:27
Well, considering how much of a confused, unfunny, tonal mess this movie is, I don't think there is a way Danny or Tom could have scored the final cut to make it fit perfectly.

Joss tried to lighten the movie up tonally and make it more adventurous and quippy instead of brooding and dark, so it makes sense to use the older, more heroic themes for Superman and Batman. Just because Elfman had a shit canvas to paint on (so to speak), doesn't mean his score fits terribly.

Hybrid Soldier2019-11-23 19:41:51
Whedon tried nothing more than making a huge pile of shit of this movie, and he succeeded.

I'm glad Junkie was let go and didn't have to work for 1 minute on Josstice League.

#ReleaseTheSnyderCut

superultramegaa2019-11-24 17:49:27
I agree Joss made the film worse, but I don't think Snyder's Cut is much better. This is a studio monster. The studio wanted a lighter film than BvS.

So similarly to Suicide Squad, we would have gotten a semi-dark film with lame, failing, awkward jokes, and underdeveloped characters who we rush through to meet (much like the final cut), as they had no previous intro to the universe.

The only difference is we'd have the pretentious, self-important dialogue, and Superman = Jesus symbolism we got from Man of Steel and BvS, along with Batman making lame jokes instead of being brooding (that shit was in the 1st trailer too before Snyder's replacement).

Hybrid Soldier2019-11-24 19:01:23
So you made it clear you don't get much of Snyder's cinema.

And you're judging a film you haven't seen... Nice ! Josstice League is a studio monster. Suicide Squad was (they screwed David Ayer, who's an amazing director).

MOS & BVS are great superhero movies, I wanna see the sequel to that. We got robbed. Thankfully, it was mostly finished before they fucked it up. Richard Donner didn't have this chance and had no choice but use some of the terrible Lester takes.

superultramegaa2019-11-24 22:27:17
No, I get Snyder's cinema. There's nothing to get, and that's not me saying there's no meaning in his films. There's nothing to get because Snyder and his screen writers tell you what the meaning of the films are.

Whether it's through Lois, Lex, Batman, Wonder Woman, etc, the characters are literally saying the meaning of the film and what each event in the movie means or symbolizes. I get why the jar of piss said "granny's peach tea" in Congress in BvS, believe me.

Don't immediately shut my arguments down as being unintelligent or "not getting" films just because I don't share your love of Snyder's cinema, Hybrid. That is so beneath you. I'm judging what the Snyder Cut is probably like based on the previous films, particularly Suicide Squad.

If you didn't like Suicide Squad, you probably won't like the Snyder Cut since the studio probably wanted similar changes.

Hybrid Soldier2019-11-24 22:58:53
The studio killed Suicide Squad AND Justice League. That's exactly why we want a Snyder Cut.

Oh and Junkie wrote a whole score for Suicide Squad, btw. As a back-up. Price's score got better test screenings... Would be interesting to hear !

mpolonest123 2019-11-25 01:06:20
@Hybrid
Wait what!?!? :O

Did he record the entire score? So not only do we have one but two unreleased Junkie scores now. Omg

tilibro2019-11-25 03:00:59
All this corporate backstabbing and executive meddling with Justice League is even worse than Superman's upper lip.

Bill Koufo2019-11-25 11:18:46
Well, the fact is that even the Snyder Cut isn't exactly the movie that Zack originally intented. After the BvS backlash they even forced Snyder and Terrio to make some changes on the script, so the tone of Justice League was a bit spoiled from the beginning.

I think there was a scene where Darkseid kills Lois inside the Batcave and this was what drove Superman crazy against Batman ("She was my world and you took her from me"). And WB didn't even allow this scene to be shot.

However, the Snyder Cut would be at least more consistent with the previous movies and as a movie itself.

Scorefan2019-11-25 16:10:26
@Hybrid. The most iconic superheroes of all time are from DC: Superman (movies and TV series, Batman (movie and TV Series) even Wonder Woman series in the 80's. Marvel welcome aboard with Raimi's Spiderman trilogy. Marvel began with Iron Man which for me is the beast movie in the entire MCU along with The Incredible Hulk. The tone of that movies are correct with no oversatured jokes. In fact those MCU superheroes began to show throw the movies, because people didn't know much about them. Disney and Marvel began to make a lot of money since Iron Man 2 and know they became so popular.
WB saw the potential (a lot of money) so they started their own universe. The contacted Nolan and he recommended Snyder. Snyder showed a complete DC universe to WB and he began with MOS. What was the problem? WB thought MOS did not do much money along with all the bad reviews with all those "critics" and starteg to get interference in the next movies. Remember when Snyder shows in a comic con all the movies in the DCEU?. Snyder shows superheroes in a realistic tone, serious, no oversatured jokes, the visuals are awesome. Many people complain about the "Martha line", but nobody is complain about the "Bucky is alive line". Many people said when Captain America The winter Soldier showed in theaters "Snyder, that's how you make a great superhero film". A bad joke.
I donk't know if this is importance but Disney and Marvel has one person in charge of every movie: Kevin Feige. WB and DC don't have a person like Kevin Feige, so WB got into every movie after MOS. Just to show how different are bot universe: The funeral of Superman was able to every people. The funeral of Iron man was able only to their universe.

Snyder dosen't show any movie, in July of 2013, the only movie annunced was BvS

@Hybrid Its so nice to read your thoughts on Snyders cinema and support of the Snyder Cut. Cant imagine anyone saying it better and Im really glad you are sharing the same thoughts as most of us.

Fingers crossed it will happen and we will finally hear Junkies score too!

#ReleaseTheSnyderCut

Ds2019-11-27 23:25:40
Clearly the most wonderful thing would have been to get the whole Snyder vision, with Justice League Part 1 having Superman resurrected on the wrong side, and Part 2 ending with Batman's death. Plus lots of exciting and bold ideas.
But Snyder didn't shoot that because of WB's panic. So this Snyder cut was already a truncated, hybrid thing. However, I'm absolutely positive it was miles better than what Whedon did with it. There's a fanmade cut floating around, with less Whedon jokes, snippets from MoS added as flashbacks and the whole score replaced by HZ/JXL tracks from MoS, BvS, King Arthur, Mad Max, etc. These changes alone made the movie significantly better, especially some action scenes which still had plenty of Snyder material. It's tragic how Elfman's score and Whedon's reshoots removed any kind of suspense of excitement from that movie.

On another topic, I find it surprising to read that Suicide Squad tested better with Steven Price's score. I wonder how test audiences even managed to distinguish a score in that movie - undermixed and polluted by songs.

Mr.Unbreakable reply Replies: 0 || 2019-03-29 22:57:16
The cut's Snyder exists !!! Snyder himself has confirmed it. The movie has a duration of 3:40 hours. it's finished and you just need some effects retouching and you have the movie in your possession although it depends on the Warner executives.

mpolonest123 reply Replies: 4 || 2019-03-26 15:00:24
Snyder confirmed that his cut of the film is essentially done, it’s just up to WB to release it.

Scorefan2019-03-26 22:21:48
I don't think WB release the Snyder Cut, because with the new way they take, it could affect the new movies.
But, i would like to see the Snyder cut

mpolonest123 2019-03-27 01:05:59
I could see it getting some kind of release down the line, it’s not uncommon for Directors Cuts to pop up years after a film has left theaters. What I don’t see is them shelling out money to finish/add effects or whatever other touch ups may be needed.

My personal hope is that (somehow) they get Junkie involved to finish whatever score he started, just to hear his take.

MrZimmerFan2019-03-27 11:02:55
'I don't think WB release the Snyder Cut, because with the new way they take, it could affect the new movies.'

The Snyder Cut was a toned down version of the ORIGINAL version (drafted between Snyder and Terrio before BvS release in threaters and was very dark, and adresses the Knitghmare vision of Bruce), but the studio wanted something more lighthearted and fun, Snyder says the original concept was still in the Snyder Cut.

Totally, there are three versions of the same movie: the unmade, the Snyder Cut and WB cut

MrZimmerFan2019-03-27 11:06:57
And wasn't affect the new movies, because Aquaman is same character was intended by Snyder (Wan work with him in that aspect, and the movie happens after the JL events and begins with a element of the Snyder Cut, with Arthur going to save a russian submarine) and Shazam, well the movie tells other story with an another character, but BvS happen.

About the James Gunn's Suicide Squad, well see.

Hi every body. Any news about the composers of future DCEU films like shazam or green lanturn corps ? Is there any rumeors who will compose them ?
I truely like hans zimmer move on from DCEU to MCU and compose the captain marvel.

dirty_score2018-07-04 19:46:08
Pinar Toprak is scoring Captain Marvel. Hans Zimmer is with X-Men which is not in the MCU, yet.

Benjamin Wallfisch might be the one for Shazam since he worked with the director in the last 2 movies..

Mephariel2018-07-05 16:37:44
I am ok with Zimmer or Powell anchoring the X-Men franchise. But yeah, Zimmer needs to get as far from DCEU as possible unless he is asked to score for future WW movies or Man of Steel movies.

I really hated this score for not using Clark's theme from MOS but this particular track "Home" is really growing on me. Still nothing tops Zimmer's magnificent theme

Michael2018-02-21 13:49:20
I really hated the entire thing. Everything about it. Fuck WB, fuck Whedon, fuck Elfman.

mpolonest1232018-02-21 14:19:57
I couldn’t agree more. In context “Home” is really out of place, especially when there is already an established theme for Clark. On its own it’s not bad at all.

That’s how this score overall is. On its own it’s actually a pretty damn good superhero score, with a good balance of themes and solid action writing. In context of the film and the DCEU in general, it’s such a departure from the prior themes/style that was established.

meta2018-02-21 14:24:30
cmon bro whaddaya expect? these dc people blew their wad with the Dark Knight and Nolan leaving, so they tried to keep it dark by employing GameBoy enthusiast Snyder who turned it into a farce. Zimmer wiping his ass with this was another nail in the coffin.

By this point with the whole gritty dark theme being an overplayed hand, the merging of these Superheroes took WB to the only one place they probably could still dig out some hope to salvage it - by mining the Batman and Superman cartoon series, hiring Whedon to punch it up a bit, and getting Elfman back to bring back the nostalgia (Im guessing Shirley Walker would have been the first person they call, but obviously she is deceased RIP).

Didn't work for many reasons, but whatever...I dont say FUCK EM....Not necessary.

mpolonest123 2018-02-21 14:32:50
@meta
And maybe the film was already a mess before Whedon came in too. Unless people know the whole story no one can point fingers. This is why hardcore fanboys bother me. They get so worked up over things that really aren’t that big a deal. I understand not liking the film as is (and there are some truly bad moments there) but why start making assumptions before you know the full story?

Ian2018-02-21 21:34:54
@meta

I think Elfman is a phenomenally talented composer, and I agree with "the whole gritty dark theme being an overplayed hand", but nonetheless Hans's theme for Superman really, really works within the MoS universe. So yeah, dumping it didn't make any sense, IMO

meta2018-02-22 14:22:27
well i also think theres a little revenge at play with Elfman and Zimmer (Zimmer's dismissive insult to Elfman years ago about his music), which may explain why Elfman decided not to use Zimmer's music (outside of Wonder Woman, which was probably coerced by WB to include, albeit VERY briefly). I mean, if I was in Elfman's shoes I certainly wouldn't wanna use Zimmer's stuff after insulting my work.

Edmund Meinerts2018-02-22 14:32:07
These guys are pros and veterans, I HIGHLY doubt there's anything so petty going on.

Balfe2018-02-22 14:40:28
Well, they had to deal with JUNK xl as the opposite. Anything will probably sound more professional and appropriate after that nonsense this 'composer' would have analized. And to be fair, all of you critiquing the Snyder style forget that a big part of that style was the nonsense crap that Zimmer 'invented' for the genre.

Yes, Man of Steel is not bad and has some great moments of ingenuity especially when they are not destroyed by Balfe's banal inability to be creative. And Hans' work on the Nolan Batman trilogy is very stellar, but mostly when it references his other styles - the grabling nonsense of the Bane music not so much.

But remember that Snyder had Tyler Bates as his house composer until he sold out to Warner Brothers' demands for Zimmer.....

Interestingly, Tyler Bates is nowadays one of the most promising composers out there with his work on Guardians of the Galaxy and the John Wick franchise.

While exciting work is done by Bates and Goransson, Zimmer experiments with sound design like he is Gil Melle out of an atonal postmodernist movement that passed out of style forty years ago, sounding like an old man being cool (if you don't get the reference, don't worry, you are ignorant....).

Hybrid Soldier2018-02-22 18:50:36
Meta your comment is based on smoke...

Do you have any idea of what Hans & Elfman's relation is ? How many scores Danny mixed at Remote Control ? That when Hans was writing Batman Begins, Danny was in the next room and Hans invited him to check what he was doing ? How many people from RCP Elfman recruited to help him ?

Meta2018-02-23 02:14:13
Actually Hybrid my comment is based on their separate interviews years apart. Zimmer's arguably dismissive comment years ago and Elfman's arguably stern remark about his theme being the only Batman theme, of recent note.

If they are both good friends who go to each other's barbecues on Sundays and drink beer together, more power to them. If they have a stellar working relationship, well, I obviously am not privy to that, but good on them. However based on what I've heard my impressions don't lean towards the latter.

If I'm wrong, I'm wrong.

Mike (OTM)2018-02-23 04:39:37
Hybrid, what did Danny think of what Hans was doing? Since he tries to claim that no Batman composer after him wrote a "theme"...

Snoke2018-06-06 01:48:33
The DCEU scores basically became like the MCU scores. Few uses of old themes but completely new. Like the Avengers theme is recurring but is their a distinctive theme for Iron man in the MCU? No. What’s Superman’s theme in the DCEU now Williams or Zimmer. Elfman should have just compiled the two. I’ve listened to videos of people combining the MOS and Williams Superman and it is not st beautiful.

Hi Guys,

I am sorry to fail you guys. I tried out some Hollandic beats. Hans master told me to make it more real, more serious. For me, serious means hard core. Hard core means more pump. Sexy pump that makes my bold spot shine. I like samples from the 90s. They make me shit-snatch. My term, don't use it.

So, I made a groove for the team. It sounded like the car squel from the Dutch show Salamander. This is my main theme. In a Junkie World, you will listen to my groans as I navigate Amsterdam. Mad Max - fuck you, Slag X. That is me.

At the end of the day, the Zimmer style for Batman is now done. It had its ten years of glory but now sounds like bad advertising music as all of Hans' music tends to do after its cycle runs out.

Junkie does not have the skills to come up with a new style nor do any of the lackies Hans employs currently.

Good at doing additional, terrible at anything original.

Think back to the days of Powell etc and now we have Krazcynski. Fuck.

The Hans factory is dying finally. This is a positive thing for film art as Balfe was the epitomy of a drone/clone composer and now the industry is catching up.

They can get either a computer/Balfe to do the same thing or find someone who has actual skills and talent.

Maybe we can finally get some real composition here.

Mike (OTM)2018-02-23 21:59:33
Oh, hey, Balfe turned into Danny Elfman, guys!

That being said, I agree with some of the above points.

MrZimmerFan2018-02-23 22:03:18
Can somebody erase the troll?

Meta2018-02-24 12:00:24
Honestly, I do feel bad for Elfman, because for Chrissakes hes been doing 50 Shades of Grey these days, and the last memorable scores I have of him are from 2012. But I don't think Zimmer or even Elfman for that matter are done as yet. I predict by the end of this decade Zimmer will have a new wave in popularity wash in. I'm just waiting for Elfman's wave right now...not quite seeing it yet.

Olive2018-02-24 17:52:31
Yeah, Silvestri, Newman, Goldenthal and JNH too. The six most popular "new" composers, along with Horner, of the 80's and 90's.

Olive2018-02-24 17:53:31
Seven with Zimmer

Ahmad2018-02-24 22:29:35
Yeah... I'm not sure about Elfman's wave. The guy decided to bring back his old Batman theme instead of actually writing a new one. He has to re-invent himself.

Olive2018-02-25 01:37:48
It was a missed opportunity.

Meta2018-02-25 03:31:13
I agree. His Justice League theme is just a deconstruct of his Batman theme. Clever, yeah sure - he's done similar things with the Men In Black sequels and I'm sure there's others I can't think of right now - but I personally dont consider Elfman's involvement in this new DCEU to be very welcome. Zimmer paints a different canvas than Elfman, and I love both their works.

Ian2018-02-25 05:27:28
I think it's worth noting that Zimmer's popularity at this point is largely under his direct control - meaning that if he were to decide to stop touring, go back to writing full-time, and return to his 'epic' thematic style, I think we'd see a surge in his popularity of the sort we saw from Batman Begins through til Interstellar. However, I just don't think he's interested, which is totally his right.

I certainly agree that the RCP proteges at this point are, frankly, shit compared to how they used to be. I mean, even a guy like Steve Mazzaro (who I genuinely like and who wrote some of the coolest cues in Chappie, and basically co-wrote BvS - a score I actually like) just utterly pales in comparison to the Powell era.

Actually, I have to take that back a bit; Wallfisch is a very, very talented guy, honestly so much better than someone like Junkie that I weirdly tend to forget he's under the RCP roof now.

Edmund Meinerts2018-02-25 10:27:13
Wallfisch is a good composer indeed, but BR2049 (and Dunkirk) were absolutely the wrong place for him. He's not a synth guy. He was originally a protege of Dario Marianelli, for heaven's sake - he's got a far more classical/orchestral sensibility. A score like Cure for Wellness is a much better fit for him. I'm not sure why Hans thought it was best to bring him of all people in on BR2049 when the more electronically-inclined Mazzaro/Kawczynski duo would have made more sense for a Blade Runner score (I say this based mostly on Chappie).

Miguel2018-02-25 11:58:25
It would be good to see Kawczynski doing more.Chappie was excellent

Olive2018-02-25 22:20:09
Yeah, Mazzaro and AK would be more interesting choices, even Balfe.

Maybe Zimmer has more confidence in Wallfisch? He delivered Verbinsky's "Cure" gratuitously for him and then tied him up on two of his major projects last year.

When I refer to security, I talk about the "assurance of delivering a good job".

Ian2018-02-26 09:27:23
1000000% agreed that Wallfisch was the wrong choice for Blade Runner; I'd have been genuinely to hear a Zimmer/Mazzaro collaboration (Andrew K.'s stuff tends to be extremely grating, IMO), but they were both on tour last year, which might explain Wallfisch's involvement.

Now that I think about it, if Hans and Steve were on tour, and Wallfisch and Lorne were working on Dunkirk and BR2049, where was Kawczynski?

Ian2018-02-26 09:28:00
*genuinely curious

Medigo2018-02-26 10:22:26
Considering IT. I dont see Benjamin as a bad choice for synthetic music myself.

Edmund Meinerts2018-02-26 10:25:51
Kawczynski did work on Wonder Woman last summer...as well as Mark Mothersbaugh's Thor Ragnarok, strangely enough.

JBSO992018-02-26 10:37:51
About Wallfisch, I agree with Medigo. IT had several cues with synths and those were great. And BR2049 was also great and I think a big part of the score was created by him and maybe Zimmer helped with the overall sound or with the themes.

That being said, I prefer Wallfisch doing orchestral tracks like A Cure For Wellness that in my opinion is one of the best scores of RCP from the previous year.

rockhound2018-02-26 10:44:58
the funny thing with BR2049 is, that they hired someone, who couldn't deliver what the filmmakers wanted. then they hired someone, who had no time to do the movie, so they had to hire a third guy, who was also at the end the wrong guy for that project, because the music added nothing to the movie, just in a very few moments. the music was loud, but didn't create atmosphere. the music was just there. the one theme, that sounded a bit like the the theme from The Fan was pretty nice and also effective, but that was all....sadly.

Hybrid Soldier2018-02-26 11:38:35
Because Kawczynski had 2 solo films (one being one of my fav' action scores of 2017) to score.

Medigo2018-02-26 12:43:18
I'd say the music added a lot to the movie myself
But then I dont know why we're talking about BR2049 here

Ahmad2018-02-26 15:45:05
LOL what? Nonsense. The "not a synth guy" wrote the bulk and the heart of the whole score, the horse theme. It is featured in so many cues (2049, Sapper's Tree, Someone Lived This, Sea Wall, etc...). It is one of the most beautiful themes ever written. I've been listening to those tracks since October non stop. Don't think they could've done a better job. It's perfect.
As much as I love the movie, I don't think it would've had the same impact on me if it had been scored differently.

Wallfisch's contribution to Dunkirk was also great.

Edmund Meinerts2018-02-26 16:10:24
Wallfisch's contribution to Dunkirk was playing Elgar's Enigma on a 30-year-old keyboard.

,2018-03-10 00:35:57
Yeah I sometimes think Hans can be over-generous with the crediting/praise for others.

mpolonest123 2018-03-26 21:11:53
Apparently he did actually compose a good chunk, although it’s a big possibility that it was just score demos for the completed scenes. So yeah, there is a good chance that they are on his hard drive.

Bondo2018-03-26 21:41:31
Fingers are crossed that WB and DC realizes the terrible mistake they made in replacing Snyder/JunkieXL with Whedon/Elfman, and uses some of their DVD and Bluray sales to fund a Snyder cut. What's interesting is that Snyder has been leaking images from his deleted scenes on Vero, and there has been no reprisal from WB over ownership...

jewen2018-03-26 23:06:24
Thanks a lot for response. I know that now is the promotinal campaig for the dvd/bluray...but sooner than later I strongly believe that WB will make an anunce. It is possible that they says we'll never see the original cut/work from Snyder and Co. or maybe they listen to the fandom and release what thousands of people are claiming more and more.
And the same to Tom Holkenborg's work to this movie.
