Don't feel bad. You've just summed up why Hans and Lorne make a good team. Lorne is by all accounts a fantastic arranger and can bring out the best in others' ideas but I sometimes find his own compositions are a bit basic or leave me cold. Hans on the other hand always nails the theme and the concept but his scoring to picture to me feels clunky and a bit amateurish, especially when the music is dense.

Both super talented in their own ways. :-)Is there anyway o get sheet music for Into the pie machine for orchestra?Just saw Maleficent 2. There is a lot more Newton Howard in the movoe than there is on album.
I actually can't really understand why they didn't include the reprise of The Christening (the dinner scene) & the finale in the movie.

Zanelli's score is wonderful and I love it very much. But would have loved this on albumI can't imagine how someone likes Balfe's part over Richters. As you said Thomas, Richters work sounds more like suites, and Balfes work is written more to picture. BUT, it sounds to me also like a typical RCP-work with Hans. While Hans gives the direction with his suites and melodies, Balfe and co are adapting those suites to the specific scenes and writing some "new" stuff to fill any gap if there is any need of it, so they become additional composers in the credits.

And here, we have the same. Richter shows the direction and some cues are real intense and beautiful. Balfes parts sounding like a gap-filler. I don't want to talk bad about Balfe, he's a composing machine, but still i can't find anything remarkable on those parts and so i can't understand how Richters work hasn't been used but instead the more colorless cues from Balfes part :/

Again, don't feel insulted guys, it's just my sensationBalfeís part is the best I think.
It also seems written to picture instead of just long suites.
My understanding is the Balfe wrote half of the score but the album doesnít seem to represent that for some reason.
I really liked Richterís score over balfesI listened Max Richter for years. He is the kind of select or minority composer who does his solo works and soundtrack for movies not so famous.
His solo works are really really good with quintet and piano and voice. "on the nature of daylight" is definitely the best.
His sountrack is not good as his solo, to be honest. I think "the Leftovers" (2014-2017, HBO series), "Miss Slaone" (2016) and "Mary Queen of Scots" (2019) are cool.
If you need some peaceful music for meditation or good sleep, listen to his work.Richter did his recording in january and june 2019. The Director himself is a fan of Richter, so the deadline and director are not the reason.
It seemed that producers were not satisfied with Richter's music and they wanted something new, that's why they got Lorne. It turned out Lorne brought a very limited new...@Cercei
Hybrid can definitely answer that best. Richterís score is used (alongside Balfeís material) as well as some source pieces. If I remember correctly itís a mish-mash of the two.I do know that piece, itís very pretty. Iíll check out his other works, thanks for the recommendation. In terms of minimalism I really am into Brian Eno at the moment. His ďMusic For AirportsĒ and ďThe Lovely BonesĒ are excellent if you like more introspective music.
btw, you're saying Lorne recomposed and reworked the entire score. as i haven't seen the movie yet, did the producers end up with not using richters score for it at all and just used the score from Lorne?thanks for your information. but i actually don't understand why they have done that. i've heard now Lornes cues and Richters cues. all those cues from Lorne, they sound very similiar to that what Richter composed, but somehow with less melodies. And you really have to work hard to not use fewer melodies then Richter, as he's a minimalist at its best ^^ with that being said, i can't hear any groundbreaking differences from Lornes part, so what was their idea on hiring it and getting the same style of music, but in a more "light" version? :/i really admire Max Richters work, he isn't that new in this scene. his style is that repeating minimalism. maybe you've heard once the cue "on the nature of daylight" which was used a lot by many other movies. his last score which knocked me out was "Hostiles". such an emotional and intense score, you need to hear that, and probably see the movie as well (with Christian Bale).

Really surprised at this album, Iíve never really heard anything from Max Richter but I really like what he ended up writing for this score. It surprisingly flows well for a stand alone listen. Itís funny that the producers wanted a different approach, I think Richter nailed it.

Balfeís contribution is excellent as well, I particularly like that repeating chord progression (which is starting to become one of his trademarks considering how many times he has used it). Itís disappointing that they didnít include more of his contribution though, since he apparently rewrote the entire score.Lorne said in his Twitter, the first album for His Dark Materials come 3rd November, no date, for the moment, for the second album.
Was the producersi haven't understood the fact, that Lorne was involved in this. Can someone explain it for me? Was the director not satisfied with Richters music? Was the deadline too near? Or what was the reason why they have brought Lorne to this project?"The Wanderer", "Event Horizon", "You Have To Let Me Go" and "Tuesday (Voiceless)" = WOW WOW WOW!!!Zanelli is no James Newton Howard, but he did a fantastic job with writing a large scale fantasy score. Iíll even say that, while I think the first Maleficent is stronger overall, I personally like the action writing better here. Also 2 little things Iíve noticed;

1. The new theme here sounds fairly similar to the Father/Son tune from KFP3
2. 2:20-3:30 sounds like it may have been temped from the finale of Fantastic Beasts. (Or maybe Iím just crazy lol)Great work of Zanelli, if is not as good like JNH's Maleficent, is a tremendous work, with a terrific writing and orchestrations, even the most tender parts are terrific.

@Hybrid
Since itís been awhile since this came out, do you know what the other suites are that Hans wrote for this project? (Excluding The Batman Suite
of course)

Ian McCarthy reply Replies: 2 || 2019-03-31 08:55:06
I recognize the official crediting on this is probably the result of the way the project was contracted, but man, it's still frustrating Junkie got cover & co-composer credit on a score he barely touched (seriously, he's credited here as having worked on SEVEN of 53 cues).

Personally, I'd credit things like this:
Original Themes Composed by Hans Zimmer [credited for all themes & cues]
Score Co-Composed by Hans Zimmer [see above] & Steve Mazzaro [31 cues; keep in mind Steve may well have been primarily responsible for a lot of the cues he and Hans are both credited for]
Additional Music Composed by Andrew Kawczynski [11 cues], Benjamin Wallfisch [9 cues], and Tom Holkenborg [7 cues]
Man of Steel / General Zod "Arcade" Theme Originally Composed by Hans Zimmer & Tom Holkenborg

(And yeah, this is borderline if not outright OCD-level, lol, but it just viscerally annoys me when creative works are credited this inaccurately.)

Hybrid Soldier2019-03-31 12:18:37
Well, the thing is the most important is the cuesheet, it's how they will get money.

And well, if you push your thinking, Tom would have deserved a bigger credit on MOS, imho... :)

So let's say BvS was some "aknowledgement" ! lol

e2019-04-01 00:56:57
Hybrid can you tell us more about the cue sheet process and what you can interpret from it?

Mr.Unbreakable reply Replies: 6 || 2019-03-29 22:56:17
The cut's Snyder exists !!! Snyder himself has confirmed it. The movie has a duration of 3:40 hours. it's finished and you just need some effects retouching and you have the movie in your possession although it depends on the Warner executives.

joso whedonite2019-03-29 23:34:14
literally everyone but the haters knew that. No one doubted it.

Mr.Unbreakable2019-03-30 00:46:39
I know, but the fact that Snyder confirms it, with his words gives me a lot of satisfaction

MrZimmerFan2019-03-30 14:57:39
But Holkenborg dosen't finish the score, maybe creates some demos of the ideas for the score

mpolonest123 2019-03-30 15:32:03
Considering how much time he had on the project before getting the boot, I would guess that Tom probably wrote a suite (like he normally does) and possibly demoíd some early score cues. Nothing was probably recorded but I feel like the music does exist.

Anonymous2019-03-30 22:37:00
If a 3+ hr cut thatís pure Snyder exists then I have no doubt JXL recorded plenty of music

Scorefan2019-03-30 23:03:51
Snyder, since the beginning of the DCEU, had a universe plan about 5 films. This five films will serve as the entry for every DC character, opposite as MCU. WB never trust in Snyder vision, change Batman vs Superman and got fired from Justice League. In the course of the anticipated main event (Justice League) WB got fired Snyder and bring Joss Whedon to reshoot the film, because WB wanted a happy film, not the dark and emotional tone from Snyder. The result: Justice League a.k.a. Avengers 1.5. (Maybe Whedon not to blame the result of the movie, he just did what WB indicated to him)
Wonder woman had her solo film and Patty Jenkins consulted Snyder
Aquaman solo film and Wan consulted Snyder
Flash Ezra Miller want a Snyder tone in Flash movie.
But WB wanted happy movies with tons of jokes every minute. Wonder woman was fun and dark at the same time.
Aquaman was fun and dark at the same time. Even had gore (The trench)
Shazam will be fun and scary
So, maybe, at the end of the time, WB will release the famous Snyder Cut and will continue the original vision of Snyder without Snyder. Maybe WB learned not copy the MCU.
As for the music, i hope Junkie has recorded the 3:40 hours music.

Here's a list of all the tracks in the complete score, and whether the tracks were unreleased or film edits of previously released tracks. In total, around thirty tracks - which make up over half the score - were completely unreleased. This amounts to around fifty minutes of unreleased music.

Also, for film versions that say (1/2) or (2/2) - that indicates the film version of a track from the original soundtrack is split into more than one track in the complete score. Feel free to let me know if there's any mistakes in this list. Enjoy!

Some minor alterations here
- Bullet is part of "Vigilante"
- Metropolis Library Fundraiser and Transfer Complete are "May I help you, mr Wayne?"
- You have to believe uses part of "Day of the Dead"
and there are some smaller tracks which use parts of existing tracks like Dreams

LS100Studios2018-03-09 15:17:28
Just caught that Medigo, thanks a bunch. :D

There were a bunch of tracks that used that motif from Day of the Dead, but since they're new renditions of the original theme I didn't label them. That includes Capitol Montage B, Time Is Running Out, Tick Tock and some other tracks too.

Medigo2018-03-09 16:13:27
doublechecked
Part 1 of Dreams is from 'New Rules'
Part 3 of Dreams is the intro to 'They were Hunters'
Also I think The White Portugese also uses part of 'New Rules'

Where's that cue after the capitol bombing, when superman got the victims out and was looking at lois and alfred cutting woods in the jungle?

darkknight12018-03-29 05:24:40
If you read the cue names, it's really easy to discern. It's "Aftermath", which is conveniently located right after "Capitol Montage (Part 2)".

Everan2018-03-29 15:27:24
Music from the extended cut scenes is not in this version. The bit of music darkknight refers to should start at 00:50 of the track you mentioned but it's not here. Most likely is that music from the extended cut wasn't recorded with this so, not here.

Like the Steppenwolf scene, that's not in this either.

Bradyn2018-03-29 17:20:50
The Ultimate Cut didn't have additional recording sessions and used either altnerate takes of preexisting tracks, previously unreleased material, or edited preexisting tracks to be longer (this is noticeable in Batman's warehouse fight and the moment where Superman is fighting Doomsday before saving Lois). That said, this release isn't the true recording sessions, as Hans usually has plenty of alternate takes and there are none here.

darkknight2018-03-29 18:21:22
@bradyn any chance of the ultimate cut complete score being leaked?

Bradyn2018-03-29 20:55:40
@darkknight, I have no idea, but I'd doubt it, since it doesn't technically have its own sessions. That said, the full sessions for BvS might leak, and, from there, someone could likely edit together the complete score for the Ultimate Cut.

Oh jeez. There are so damn many of these things these days, I've never really thought about ranking them. Gotta say I'm astonished at some of your rankings (if those are even rankings?). The Shadow and The Phantom at the very bottom? Those are two great scores!

Off the cuff, a top 10 of mine might look something like:

1. Superman (John Williams)
2. Batman (Danny Elfman)
3. The Rocketeer (James Horner)
4. X-Men: The Last Stand (John Powell)
5. The Amazing Spider-Man (James Horner)
6. Spider-Man/Spider-Man 2 (Danny Elfman)
7. The Shadow (Jerry Goldsmith)
8. Thor (Patrick Doyle)
9. The Incredible Hulk (Craig Armstrong)
10. Hancock (John Powell)

But I'm sure I'm forgetting something, somewhere. (Not Zimmer though. He'd rank pretty high on other lists, but not superheroes for me...)

Edmund Meinerts2018-03-14 22:55:55
Judge Dredd by Silvestri should probably be in there somewhere, damn, forgot that one. And maybe put Rocketeer over Bat-Elfman after all? Eh. They make too damn many of these.

Scorefan 2018-03-15 00:21:43
I add:
Ramin Djawadi - Blade Trinity
Harry Gregson-Williams - X Men: Wolverine
Shirley Walker: Batman The animated series and some movies
Ken Thorne - Superman II y III
Alexander Courage - Superman IV
Dario Marianelli - V for Vendetta
Matthew Margeson - Kick Ass 1 & 2
Elliot Goldenthal - Batman Forever
Paul Leornard Morgan - Dredd
Chris Young - Spiderman 3
James Horner - The amazing spiderman 1

Olive2018-03-15 13:47:43
1. Batman and Batman Returns - Danny Elfman
2. Superman - John Williams
3. Spider Man 1 and 2 - Danny Elfman
4. The Shadow - Jerry Goldsmith
5. Batman and Batman Forever - Elliot Goldenthal
6. The Dark Knight - Hans Zimmer
7. Michael Kamen - X-Men
8. The Last Stand - John Powell
9. The Amazing Spider Man - James Horner

12. Ant-Man - Christophe Beck

I will see the David Newman's "The Phanton".

Beside "beautiful lie" I like "Ow, My Balls" maybe because Hans used the same tunes from the Dark Knight..

lol2018-03-13 14:28:58
are you high?

FaresTdkr2018-03-13 16:40:03
Go and listen to "watch the world burn" from TDK and tell me if it wasn't the same tunes?

Bradyn2018-03-13 17:08:44
I'm not the original person who questioned it, but I don't hear a similarity. They have a similar structure, but I don't think they're the same tunes.

Edmund Meinerts2018-03-13 17:52:51
Even if it did sound the same, those would be JNH's "tunes", not Hans. ;)

Radik2018-03-13 18:02:12
That theme what you talking is nothing less then dark krypton/superman theme. Listen "Look to the stars" or any others cues with that theme from man of steel and you gonna realize it too ;)

16112018-03-14 03:25:50
I thought the same thing when I first heard it, but @Radik is right. It's a twisted version of the Superman theme. It's got a strong Dark Knight vibe to it but it's actually a rendition of Hans' Superman theme.

mpolonest123 2018-03-14 13:07:10
I actually do think the tune from the last 5 minutes of the Dark Knight Suite (the ferry scene in the film) sounds very close to the dark variation on Supes theme in ďDay of the DeadĒ. Still, similar versions were also used in Gladiator and Crimson Tide so I guess itís a common progression for Hans.

mpolonest123 2018-03-14 13:12:40
Just relistened and yeah, they are pretty close. The key difference is that the Dark Knight version stays in place while the Superman theme gradually ascends the scale, especially in ďOw, My BallsĒ.

It's interesting that BvS uses Shostakovich's Waltz No. 2, and then less than a year later, Zimmer and Ben Wallfisch are both also involved in A Cure for Wellness, where the cue "The Rite" (which I'm pretty sure is the one Hybrid said Hans was involved in before he left the project) has a waltz in it that sounds definitely inspired by the Shostakovich (listen from 2:30 onwards). It's a pretty famous piece so most likely a coincidence, but you never know...

Joy reply Replies: 9 || 2018-03-08 10:28:18
Oof, what are the chances that two tracks named Capitol Montage won't have the bit I was looking forward to the most. The one in the Subway when KGB kills that lady. Also, the scene in the scoutship with Steppenwolf. All the rest I was hoping for are there, though. Wreckage, Emerald City, Hero's Park, You Have to Believe, Preparation Montage, My Blood, Dawn of Justice and of course... Ow, My Balls.

Ahmad2018-03-08 10:41:55
This is the score for the theatrical cut. There are some interesting cues in the ultimate cut but those were done by music editors.

One of my favorite bits that are not on here is the variation of Lex's theme when Lois is in the helicopter.

JBSO992018-03-08 12:33:09
Ahmad, I was also looking for that extra choir variation of Lex's Theme. It was amazing and it's a bit sad that isn't here, but we have the rest of the complete score so I'm not complaining

gringo2018-03-08 12:38:21
i was looking for the film version of "Our Hero". Where the piano starts at the end, in the movie it's played by strings and no piano. it's so much better. unfortunately not here. how can this be called complete or recording sessions, when cues from the movie are missing??

Joy2018-03-08 12:53:56
Oh, good point. I guess since I regard the ultimate edition as the only version of BVS, I automatically assumed this would be the complete score for the complete version of the movie.

Medigo2018-03-08 13:38:03
Gringo. Maybe that track was edited after the sessions were made.

Ahmad2018-03-08 13:49:06
Again, @gringo that's how it was in the THEATRICAL CUT. Maybe some day they will leak but you should be grateful that we even got this much of music.

@JBSO99 When I first watched the UC, it really took me by surprise. I didn't expect it at all since I'm used to the TC/album version. Still, I'm extremely grateful that we finally have most of the unreleased cues.

gringo2018-03-08 13:54:44
@Ahmad: I haven't watched the theatrical cut, only the ultimate cut. haven't thought that they've used different cues or alternate cues in both movies. so thanks for explanation :)

Ahmad2018-03-08 15:12:06
@gringo
No problem :) It's funny how I prefer the album version with the piano abruptly cutting the strings. Oh, and I kinda hate how that piece is cut in half because they put the communion scene (Lex and Steppenwolf) right there. A very awkward shift in tone and it feels so out of place. I guess it's because I'm used the theatrical cut (Seen it twice in theaters).

Suanzimma2018-03-12 03:07:03
It's disappointing that the last part of "Dreams" (the piano bit, aka "They Were Hunters") is seemingly incomplete, as the version in the movie includes an extra bit of piano at the end of the track that's not on the complete or official score!

Could someone with good ears please do a piano tutorial for Heroes Park and Ow, My Balls? Iíve been dying to learn how to play these!

Those of you who have had the chance to go through this set here, could you name some of the good tunes here that you think should have been included on the official album?

JBSO992018-03-09 11:21:12
Just naming a few:

Hero's Park, Fundraiser Invitation, Do You Bleed?, Preparation Montage, My Blood, Dawn of Justice or Ow, My Balls.

I say this because they have interesting variations on themes and I think they would have make a better album listening, instead of tracks like New Rules or Vigilante

Looks like Steve Mazzaro should've been listed as co-composed here :D

JBSO992018-03-08 19:00:49
Even Benjamin Wallfisch appears in more tracks tan Tom Holkenborg. I don't know why he is credited as co-composer on the album release but he did very little in comparison to the other three.

Edmund Meinerts2018-03-08 19:03:00
It seems to me like the original idea was for Hans to do the Superman parts and JXL to handle Batman (since Hans had tackled the character already) but that's not at all what ended up happening. Maybe JXL's Batman stuff wasn't up to scratch? I guess the co-composer credit is leftover from that.

Medigo2018-03-07 12:25:42
seems to be unfortunate timing of an actual score release and a SFX rip

I think. I cant listen to the music yet.

Nomolos2018-03-07 12:55:20
Oh wow, you're right Novi!
My apologies for acting condescending earlier, hopefully you can understand why I thought the wrong way!

No man I completely get it! I heard the news and all I found were dvd rips and was kind of angry that I had been lied to, until I found some real tracks! Cheers mate, we finally have it! One of Hans' last Holy Grail!

Yahzee2018-03-08 18:05:40
...it's been crappy for DC ever since Whedon took over Justice League from Snyder and the movie released proved all my fears. Finally listening this music brings me back to a joyful place. So many beats were missing from the album and now I can enjoy whenever I want. I still wish we got the extended Luthor theme variation from the kidnapping scene, but I'm pretty happy nonetheless

Hari Haran reply Replies: 5 || 2018-03-07 16:54:10
Is it me, or does the mixing sound a billion times better in the complete score? The initial album releases were fucking dreadful in terms of mixing.

mpolonest123 2018-03-07 17:18:03
Thatís how I feel too, it seems like certain instruments are completely under/overmixed on the album release.

Granted, Itís not as bad with Zimmer scores but itís funny to hear Henry Jackmanís Civil War sound so bland on album and 100 times better on the sessions.

Nomolos2018-03-07 17:36:27
Yup it sounds much better now! Though I will add that I prefer how the official release combined the two Lex's fundraiser songs into the "May I help you, Mr Wayne" song. It sounds like it should be one song.

Huanz Immer2018-03-07 17:43:32
I love how "You Have to believe" starts off with the Superman theme and transposes into a corrupter version of Supe's theme (to show that Lex and Doomsday are connected to Superman).

mpolonest1232018-03-07 18:41:20
My personal favorite moment from the sessions is the interpolation of the Krypton theme and Lex's theme at the end of "My Blood".

Despite all of the criticisms I and others may have, this score is actually fairly intelligent. The album just didn't do a great job of showcasing that.

Ahmad2018-03-07 20:07:20
I disagree. I think the album sounds way better than the recording sessions which sound muddy and unbalanced at times. I actually find it hard to believe that all of you believe otherwise :)
In some tracks the strings are a bit too low, some tracks are more brass heavy, some tracks have vocals/choir that is a bit too loud in the mix and a bit too dry compared to soundtrack album.

I gotta say, it's cool to hear the differences between the two versions.

JBSO99 reply Replies: 0 || 2018-03-07 19:40:37
I now have listened to most of the nex tracks and I must say that I love it. I was especially waiting for the Preparation Montage, Dawn of Justice and the whole final battle and they are absolutely amazing! I love it.

Ahmad2018-03-07 16:43:18
I wonder if the second would've been used in JL if JXL was still on board.

God, how much I love that sad rendition of Supes theme:
Heroes Park, Day Of The Dead, Time Is Running Out, Ow, My Balls
It's in so many cues and it's so beautiful.

And too bad Photograph is kinda damaged.

Nomolos2018-03-07 17:39:13

Another false alarm I guess?

I'm really not sure why people get so antsy waiting for complete scores to drop. It's a total mystery what gets leaked and when, there's absolutely no point in asking "when will Complete Score XYZ come out??". Sometimes you get it within a few months of the movie's release, and sometimes you don't get it at all (I don't think there's a legit complete Gladiator out there, for instance? I'd certainly rather hear that than BvS, and have been waiting a hell of a lot longer). Just go with the flow is my advice.

Medigo2018-03-07 10:21:49
there's plenty of decent complete gladiator releases already

Sherlock Holmes 2, now there is my holy grail

Edmund Meinerts2018-03-07 10:43:34
I'd love a good SH2 as well, that album was a complete fiasco that hides what is by all accounts a pretty good score. (At least with On Stranger Tides I could understand the hiding :p )

I can't say that I've ever come across a good complete Gladiator, though. Sure, between the already-pretty-decent original album and the More Music From album we have quite a bit, plus I'm sure the odd other cue may have appeared cleanly on this or that bootleg, but a full, clean complete score? If it exists, I've never heard it.

mpolonest123 2018-03-07 12:24:45
Donít worry, itís real ;)
