Cheers guys, much appreciated!<br>In my mind I had some video interview though, as I always like watching those as well. I do wonder if there was an extra section on the home release of the movie where ideally there might be.Hans Zimmer is one of the biggest film composers working in the industry today. He won an Academy Award for his work on The Lion King, and has been nominated for six other films including Gladiator, The Thin Red Line, and As Good As It Gets. With The Last Samurai he celebrates his 100th film score, and SoundtrackNet had an opportunity to talk with Hans a few weeks ago during a rare break in his busy schedule working on Something's Gotta Give.<br><br>You've scored many projects during your career, and The Last Samurai is being touted as your 100th film score…<br><br>Well, I'm terrible with math, so I'm not doing the counting. It could be more, it could be less – but apparently it's the 100th.<br><br>So how did you get involved with the project?<br><br>If you're lucky enough to get nominated for an Oscar, you get invited to the Oscar nominee's luncheon where they hand out these little nomination certificates. There are usually 150 people standing there, and people are invited up in alphabetical order, starting with the As. By the time they get to the Cs, everybody's already back at their table chatting and eating, and while the first people called get thunderous applause, you can imagine what it's like when your name starts with Z!<br><br>So Ed Zwick and I were standing there, waiting at one of these luncheons about four years ago, and we started talking to each other. I asked him what he was working on and he told me about this movie called The Last Samurai, which I thought sounded interesting and I asked him to send me a script. After the script arrived, I didn't hear from him for a long time and I thought he'd forgotten about me, not thinking about how difficult it is to set up a samurai movie these days. The other thing I liked about the project was that Tom Cruise was involved, so it was like returning home, since I've scored a bunch of his movies – I knew we were going to have a good time.<br><br>Did it end up that way?<br><br>Ed and his editor Steve Rosenblum are such gentlemen, so together and professional, and they basically did one cut of the film, screened it, and everyone loved their work. So after this, they had plenty of time to come and hang with me, and while I usually love the re-cutting process because it's a diversionary tactic to keep the director and editor out of my life, these guys were great to have around. <br><br>Of course, my sense of paranoia made me think that something was going wrong all the time, waiting for the other shoe to drop, as it were, but it never happened. Ed phoned this morning and I thought, "Oh my god – rewrite!" It's just how my brain works. But I think he and I feel a bit odd now: we've been seeing each other every day for months, and suddenly we're done. I completely understand why people have a problem finishing a movie, because there's something really nice about the process – completion is far more boring.<br><br>For Samurai, you used Japanese percussions and ethnic woodwinds, without getting too 'Japanese'.<br><br>My problem is that I feel Japanese music is really inaccessible to Western ears, and I was really struggling with this film initially, trying to figure out what I was doing. This idea popped into my head for using Western-style themes, but applying a Japanese aesthetic to them, which sounds great of course, until I had to ask myself what I meant! Actually, I think it's just my way of not overloading certain things with too many colors, or being geometrically precise about my cues and not making them too flowery.<br><br>The Tom Cruise character is one of those nasty drunks at the beginning, who obviously has some serious problems he's trying to deal with, or not deal with. He's obnoxious and restless, suffering sleepless nights and is very un-Tom. For me, this character's journey was about his need to earn tranquility and peace, so within the score there's this very romantic, overblown and passionate theme. It's like a juvenile way of dealing with life and death – the pain and liebestod.<br><br>However, to contrast with these very relentless themes, there are a number of stark, formal and sober pieces, because I wanted to take Tom's character on a journey. He comes from America and ends up in this foreign place where he doesn't speak the language or understand the culture. But at the end of the movie, I want the audience to think that there isn't a more beautiful place for him to be, that he is at home in Japan and finally at peace.<br><br>There are many useless acts of bravery we do out of misguided romanticism, and this movie is full of courageous and dignified acts of bravery. So I wanted to play off these acts, since both the American and Japanese cultures have a concept of heroism, and I just wanted to see if I could play with the nature of the two different concepts.<br><br>So you didn't want to do the stereotypical Japanese thing...<br><br>Absolutely not! Take Akira Kurosawa's Ran, for example, which has this brilliant score where Takemitsu writes Western music, but with an Eastern accent. Somebody asked me a few days ago why As Good As It Gets was European – why did I write a European score for a quintessentially American story? For me, it's because Jack Nicholson was crazy in the movie, and I felt one of the great things about America is how they always think we Europeans are crazy. So by writing a European-styled score, it's my way of saying that Jack is crazy, but it's alright!<br><br>How do you feel about people who criticize your work for not fitting into the time period, like Gladiator?<br><br>The reason I take these jobs is because I'm interested in foreign cultures, and every time I get to work on a movie I'm thrown into the adventure of whatever that culture is, the time, and wherever the story's taking place. So one of the things I'm very careful about is not to be historically correct to the culture, but, on the other hand, not to insult the underlying aesthetics of that culture either. I remember watching Chariots of Fire and thinking how brilliantly the music worked, never missing that it wasn't period instruments! I grew up listening to Bach played by a symphony orchestra – it's the wrong sized orchestra with the wrong instruments, but I don't think that's the point.<br><br>With Gladiator, Pietro Scalia brought in a CD saying "this is Ancient Roman music," and I said, "Says who? You went to the Ancient Roman music store and bought an Ancient Roman music CD? Bullshit!" We're not anthropologists. Look at he costumes Ridley Scott had: they were more Napoleonic than Roman, which was perhaps fitting since Napoleon had stolen all of his good ideas from the Romans regarding how to make his generals look cool – and so did Hitler! So I got criticized for making the "Entry into Rome" cue too Leni Riefenstahl – but that was the joke! I am allowed to have a sense of humor in my music!<br><br>Earlier this summer your credit on Pirates of the Caribbean was "Score Overproduced by". What was the deal with that?<br><br>Well, I thought honesty was a virtue! But seriously, Jerry Bruckheimer quite rightly asked me not to give him "that old-fashioned Pirate music," and Gore Verbinski, who I adore and did The Ring with, said, "Well, it is a pirate movie, so we have to disguise it." In the end, I spent a day and a half writing tunes, Klaus Badelt wrote a lot of stuff, and we rolled up our sleeves, got drunk, behaved in a debauched way, and produced a score!<br><br>There was a lot of criticism regarding that score, but in the end it had to serve the film - which it did. You seem to get a lot of criticism on any project you do.<br><br>I had the misfortune of going onto the Film Score Monthly web site recently to look something up and vanity made me type in my own name. I suddenly realized that you can't ever get it right. Who do people want me to be? The guy that writes Matchstick Men? Or the guy that writes The Rock? Or the guy that writes Driving Miss Daisy? My need is ultimately to write for myself. I mock myself and I'm ironic about the way I speak about it because if I take it too seriously, it would be a pompous and boring thing to do. But at the same time I take each note I write very seriously – none of them are random.<br><br>The Internet Movie Database always lists you as being attached to multiple projects, so I was curious, what's Sharktail?<br><br>I complained to Jeffrey Katzenberg that I couldn't cross any more Red Seas, or deal with any more horses that can't speak – I wanted to do one of the fun animated movies instead. There's also a hip-hop element in Sharktail, and I haven't been there yet, so it's new territory! King Arthur is still in production, and I literally just got the first bits of footage just before you came here.<br><br>Are you working on all of these projects simultaneously?<br><br>I'm thinking about them! I'm also working with Jim Brooks on his new comedy, Spanglish.<br><br>And speaking of comedies, you recently did Matchstick Men for Ridley, which had a very Nino Rota vibe to it....<br><br>And I gave him credit! I thought, what if Nino had written the theme and I was just doing the variations? But I bet I'm going to get criticized for that because it's not like Gladiator.<br><br>So when did you last have a vacation?<br><br>Well, I went to Japan for a couple of days at the end of November for the Japanese premiere of Samurai, but look, I love what I do! In January I'll travel to Morocco because Ridley will be shooting his next movie, Kingdom of Heaven, so that's like a holiday!<br><br>My family and I are going away at Christmas, and what we used to do would be to rent a house in the mountains and go on these skiing holidays. It would be a crappy house, not as nice as the one we live in, my wife was still going to the market, and we're still washing our plates – so it wasn't a vacation, it was a lot of work! It's taken us a long time, but we just figured it out: we're not practical with vacations – we're staying at hotels! But while the Zimmer family isn't talented when it comes to vacations, we're talented when it comes to work!<br><br>I sat through Samurai the other day, and for the first time watched the whole movie from top to tail with everything finished and completed. It felt really good, better than a vacation. But luckily there were enough things wrong for me to think that I learned something from the experience, and now I can't wait for the next project to try these new ideas out.<br><br>The soundtrack to The Last Samurai is available from Elektra Records, and the film is currently in theaters. Matchstick Men is available on Varese Sarabande Records.<br><br>With thanks to Chet Mehta at Chasen & Co, Jason Cienkus at Warner Brothers, and Nina Lynch and Mark Wherry at Media Ventures for helping with this interview. And, of course, special thanks to Hans.Mulan get his release... through Disney+, 4th September.Mulan is being released on sept 4th. You can find an interview with Hans on his process for TLS on soundtrack.net somewhere, back in 2003 or 2004The tracklist they posted has 58 tracks and yours contains only 54<br>interesting thing, He never really spoke about Last Samurai. but you have to realize, even when He speaks, its not always the truth. <br><br>The only thing I know, in 2013 doing press for Rush, He really said the hardest job was Last Samurai, well its not true according to himself, if you watch the behind the scenes stuff from Matchstick Men from 2003, right there He says that he was working on 3 huge films, (tears of the sun / Pirates / last samurai) and Mathstick men was the absolute hardest for him.<br><br>also Ed Zwick talks about working with Hans on the dvd commentary sometimes, but nothing really fancy.<br><br>Im sure there is an interview for this film with him, since he was at the premierI am struggling to find an interview where Hans speaks about this soundtrack. Does it even exist? <br>I spent the last hours digging but nothing. I always desired to hear some comments about it, like he does for the other works he's done.<br>I know it's a far stretch for Hans To release docu scores, but am really curious as to what Brave Miss World, Believer and Jalous of the Birds sound like...<br><br><br>@Mephariel<br>You can find Great Bear Rainforest on bleedingfingersmusic.com under Anze Rozman

Another false alarm I guess?

I'm really not sure why people get so antsy waiting for complete scores to drop. It's a total mystery what gets leaked and when, there's absolutely no point in asking "when will Complete Score XYZ come out??". Sometimes you get it within a few months of the movie's release, and sometimes you don't get it at all (I don't think there's a legit complete Gladiator out there, for instance? I'd certainly rather hear that than BvS, and have been waiting a hell of a lot longer). Just go with the flow is my advice.

Medigo2018-03-07 10:21:49
there's plenty of decent complete gladiator releases already

Sherlock Holmes 2, now there is my holy grail

Edmund Meinerts2018-03-07 10:43:34
I'd love a good SH2 as well, that album was a complete fiasco that hides what is by all accounts a pretty good score. (At least with On Stranger Tides I could understand the hiding :p )

I can't say that I've ever come across a good complete Gladiator, though. Sure, between the already-pretty-decent original album and the More Music From album we have quite a bit, plus I'm sure the odd other cue may have appeared cleanly on this or that bootleg, but a full, clean complete score? If it exists, I've never heard it.

Lol

The score was made available to everyone on the Water Tower YouTube channel in 2016. Some people managed to save it, others did not stick to it because they never imagined it would become steam. The few who have it not need to feel obliged to share. I do not even know if this is possible on public platforms like YT.

Ahmad2018-02-11 22:33:07
Hmm... I get your frustration but all you got to do is wait. I wish complete scores were released officially instead of being bootlegs but that's how it is. It'll be out before you know it.

@Olive what are you talking about? The score was never uploaded to YT (by WaterTower) they uploaded the commercial soundtrack which I own and love very much but there are some interesting cues missing from it. Two tracks (I believe) were uploaded on SoundCloud but that's it.

Olive2018-02-11 22:47:58
I will consider myself wrong. I've been searching the internet for the full score. And I found one or other related news and the news that it was posted by WT on YT. But I did not find anything now. I promise to look more closely.

Someone uploaded a track (or mix of tracks) from the expanded score onto youtube last month or so. It wasn't an audio rip from the DVD, it sounded like it was straight from the album. I can't for the life of me find it anymore though, I guess it was taken down. It was a mix of Batman's unreleased tracks throughout the film, including the one where he's getting ready for Luthor's party (unveiling the car/staring at the Batsuit).

Anonymous2018-02-14 18:52:21

I have bvs and its amazing

JBSO99 reply Replies: 4 || 2018-02-03 13:41:13
I have realized that this tracklist is from the theatrical version of the movie, because in the extended edition, for example "The Desert" scene was longer, and there was more music in it, there is also several scenes that should be before and after "Half A Man". And in scenes like the Superman in the Capitol there was more music.

Also I wanted to ask. What is Quaker Steak & Lube and Ow, My Balls? This are strange track titles.

mpolonest123 2018-02-03 14:04:12
Quaker, Steak, and Lube is the cue when Clark receives the photos of the Bat Brand on the dead body. Ow My Balls is the Superman/Doomsday nuke scene. As to why they are titled that, probably some in-humour from Hans and co.

As for the extended edition, Hybrid said it was unused music that the editors pieced together for the release. I don’t know if Zimmer actually scored any of the extended scenes.

There's an interview with Hans and Tom where they were asked if they were involved with the ultimate cut and they said music editors are doing taking care of it so it is assumed that HZ and co. only worked on the theatrical cut.

^Too bad. One of my favorite bits is the variation of Lex's theme with the choir when Lois is in the helicopter after being kidnapped. It's so majestic. At least we might get the ending part which should've been included in "Problems Out Here".

JBSO992018-02-03 18:27:10
I could have figured out the Ow My Balls one because of where it's placed, but thank you so much for the other one.

So the score in extended scenes is unused music? I hope they release it (or it is leaked) someday because there are some great bits in those scenes, like the bit Ahmad mentioned when they kidnap Lois.

mpolonest1232018-02-03 18:49:59
If I had to guess (and this is totally hypothetical) Hans, Tom, and/or Steve wrote a sketchbook or series of suites which were chopped apart for the extended edition. There are variations that definitely aren’t in the theatrical cut, and I can’t imagine them being alternates.

Question for anyone whos actually heard this, are the world engine sound effects incorporated in the score like they are in the film?

Medigo2018-01-22 16:05:54
I am pretty sure they were not incorporated in the film either.
You just hear them whenever the engine fires. And sometimes its timed pretty well with the music

Rigby2018-01-22 16:29:44
I’m talking about the Bruce Wayne Dream sequences (and at the beginning of preparation montage). They use the world engine effect in the background, im not sure if it’s the score or just the sfx

I need this. I need this sooner than later. I know some people have it, and if any of you guys do, you should leak it. But I don't know how to do that

-2018-01-16 23:52:43
stop begging for free stuff

mpolonest123 2018-01-17 01:33:22
I’ll never understand why people are so rabid about this stuff. Like seriously, at the end of the day it’s just music, it has no real “value”. Don’t get me wrong, seeing BVS and SH2 leak would be awesome, but why lose sleep waiting or begging for it?

Ahmad2018-01-17 14:14:30
It doesn't matter if it has a real value or not. If I hear the music somewhere and I like it, I want to have it. I want to listen to it without all the sound effects and dialogue.

Now, I personally didn't lose sleep because of it nor begged for it but the idea that we've got a detailed tracklist and the fact that it exists on someone's hard drive but I can't listen to it sucks. I'm not saying they should leak it though. The whole situation is bizarre to me.

-2018-01-17 22:50:16
yeah, you are definitely still begging

Olive2018-01-17 23:27:10
"Music has no value"
say this to all these artists who have made fortunes by simply opening their mouths to sing or playing an instrument

Ahmad2018-01-18 01:33:44
Well, call what you want.

Most people here (myself included) would be more than happy to support the artists and the people who worked hard on the music and actually pay for the complete score but unfortunately such releases rarely happen.

Novi 2018-01-19 05:35:41
Yeah, film scores are my passion. That's why I want this score so bad. I seriously would pay for this score. See it as begging, frankly I don't care what you see it as. Zimmer changed my life through music. It's my passion. This score means something. Music is value.

Meta2018-01-19 14:11:53
Novi - I'm sure at some point youll find this on youtube or something...But why so interested in THIS score? It's really not that great at all, by comparison. Junkie channels Mad Max while Zimmer tries too hard to not redo his Dark Knight themes...

mpolonest123 2018-01-19 16:13:41
Look, I’m passionate about music as well. And yes, seeing this leak would make me happy. But I also know that there are better things to use your energy on. Wishing for this score to leak, or asking anyone who has it to leak it is a waste of time. It’s going to come out when it comes out, be it tomorrow or a year from now. Hell, there are two of my favorite scores from the 90’s I grew up with that still have seen no release at all. I don’t spend my time worrying about them though, when they come they come.

And as for music having no value, I probably shouldn’t have phrased it like that. I was mainly referring to people who hold on to these sessions and think they somehow increase with age. It’s not wine for God’s sakes. I do apologize for making it sound like music has no point or effect on people. I just think there are more important things to stress over.

Kingfannypack/Milfcommander2018-01-20 07:14:38
And what 90's scores are those?

mpolonest123 2018-01-20 13:39:19
Timekeeper/Universe of Energy by Bruce Broughton. Being theme park scores though a release is incredibly difficult.

Novi 2018-01-20 21:43:31
You're completely right. Sorry if I came off kinda idiotic. My love for music got the best of me. I was patient with the Man of Steel complete score, but I was just overly excited for this one. I gotta have more patience

mpolonest123 2018-01-20 23:04:34
@Novi No need to apologize, at the end of the day we all want to see these recording sessions leak. In the past year alone we already got TASM2 and Rush. It’ll definitely come :-)

Kingfannypack2018-01-21 07:24:07
Don't listen to them, you want this album you can say it as much as you want. I just hope they release the Batman suite along with the release (although i'm sure its just "Men Are Still Good" with three or four minutes shaved off) any album with a suite is what i'm all for!

....2018-01-21 19:11:40
The bigger question is; how many more suites did Hans record. We know about The Batman Suite, but what about Lex, etc.

Darkknight2018-01-21 23:10:34
Hey man could any of you please help me find the film version of harry transformation from TASM 2 complete score? I got the 3:09 long one but that's the album version

Olive2018-01-18 21:15:41
A Imagine Dragons movie?

NotSoAnonymous2018-01-18 21:29:13
I think he's referring to "Believer" which is a documentary following a member of the band researching the Church's treatment of it's Gay community. I didn't know this was even going to be a thing until 10 minutes ago.

Music absolutely has value. Music is about storytelling, especially film music. To me, film music is the most emotionally inspiring music. The songs written by RCP detail the development of characters I hold dear to me. The evolution of Ramin Djawadi's Daenerys Targaryen theme, or Hans' evolving Will and Elizabeth theme or the chaotic theme to General Zod. Music has always had a place in the human spirit.

Idealistic tangent aside, I would very much like to see this album out.

Adam reply Replies: 0 || 2018-01-17 05:54:57
You're absolutely right. Music has no value. To some people it's priceless and it means more than anything to them. If a picture says 1,000 words, how many emotions does music evoke?

Olive2018-01-14 11:51:31
Hello, Louise!

The expanded score has leaked somewhere and few people have access to it (I'm not one of them). There is no forecast when the official album will come out.

Anonymous2018-01-14 14:48:43
Yes there was a forecast for the official album coming out. Almost 2 years ago. It leaked in February 2016 when a few people got their hands on the digital release. I was one of them.

Kingfannypack2018-01-16 22:39:59
You “were” one of the people who received it?

Novi2018-01-16 23:19:59
You should definitely put it up online mate. We all need it

Yeah no! 2018-01-17 00:16:42
I think he meant the official album. There are no plans for the complete score to be released officially. This is a leak/bootleg. Some seem to have it so it definitely will leak soon.

It's unfortunate that the majority of complete scores are bootlegs instead of official releases that could be purchased.

Mike2018-01-07 22:38:20
Wonder Woman's theme should be on track 48. The Girl

mpolonest123 2018-01-07 23:45:22
And 31. Photograph
(I also think 39. Dawn of Justice is the “Justice League” sequence which uses WW’s rhythmic motif)

Surprising. So, Steve and Andrew did more than Junkie on this score and yet he gets the composer credits? How does that work, Hybrid?

Edmund Meinerts2018-01-08 22:35:23
Not Hybrid, but I know what he's going to say: Contracts! ;)

Olive2018-01-08 22:52:23
I'm not Hybrid, but I'll answer:

blah blah blah

Junkie was the second major contributor to the soundtrack of Man of Steel. Zimmer brought him to BvS and the two made an agreement that Junkie would be the one to continue working with Skyder.

He may not even be the author of most cues, but the whole score sounds like something done by him. There is no denying it. And half of the major tracks, those that were released on the two original records, have material composed or arranged by him. So there's nothing to complain about.

Still, did he deserve the main credit? Maybe yes. All the sound with the MoS percussion was produced and conducted by him. And probably the same thing happened in BvS

Olive2018-01-08 23:01:02
So it is difficult to understand these credits anyway. These cues where there are shared names like HZ, SM, AK or HZ, BW, JXL., sometimes I imagine as a team work, or a crude demonstration produced by Hans and improved by (put the name) guy, or, still , that all this is taken from a suite like in TDKR, or that they are 80% originals ideas of these men produced with the material that Zimmer makes available. Anyway, it's a puzzle. Sometimes it's best not to stick to it too much.

Ian2018-01-09 09:32:22
^ My intuition is that Hans did some of the big cues/suites alone or with minimal help (the credits reflect this), and then oversaw the rest, with Steve, Andrew, Ben mostly generating variations of Hans's work. It's honestly not at all clear to me what Tom did here, other than The Tower Falls (which is just a variation of Arcade).

Nomolos reply Replies: 9 || 2018-01-02 06:16:11
I think people will receive the score more favourably if they listen to the expanded score. I thought the exclusions they made for the regular were odd, and the choice of songs for the deluxe were even more head-scratching (I'm looking at you, "New Rules" and "Vigilante").

Nomolos2018-01-02 12:46:38
Also, are these track titles for real?
46. "Ow, My Balls".
49. "I Love You, Muffin" wtf? Hans came up with these titles?

Ahmad2018-01-02 12:51:18
LOL yeah what's up with that? :D
I mean one of Dunkirk's cues was named "Sauerkraut Sauce" so anything is possible.

mpolonest123 2018-01-02 13:45:34
I’m still puzzled about 22. Quaker, Steak, and Lube. What is that?

As for the complete score, it’s nice to hear more fleshed out variations of each theme as opposed to the album, which was lacking imo. My favorite is definitely the Krypton/Luthor counterpoint in My Blood.

Bou2018-01-02 14:48:42
Quaker : Superman
Steak : Batman
Lube : Wonder Woman
