It hits all the same notes you would expect out of a feel good sports movie, but the performances and real life story really add a lot to it, as does Rabin’s score.
=======================

Well said!

Agreed.I've demanded for it to be removed a long time ago... Maybe in 10 years, who knows...RIP to a legend....

Just rewatched Coach Carter a few weeks back. It hits all the same notes you would expect out of a feel good sports movie, but the performances and real life story really add a lot to it, as does Rabin’s score.Listening to Rabin's two powerful "basketball scores" - this one and Glory Road. In memory of the great Kobe! RIP, legend!Honestly man, I never understood this site's ratings either.
For those of you disappointed in this score...remember...This is Bad Boys 3 lol....Have you heard Bad Boys 1+2? Cmon now...relax and take it for what it isI'd be surprised if we don't see some Wallfisch scores this year. He has been so prolific lately, would be weird to suddenly go an entire year without a single assignment.CD coming from LLL!Really liked this score, and the movie wasn't as bad as people claim as well... Benjamin Wallfisch does some very nice stuff, his horror scores are always on point like It 1 & 2, Annabelle: Creation, A Cure for Wellness...

I know he's gonna deliver it with Mortal Kombat even if the movie isn't that good. But kind of a bummer that his next scheduled project comes out in 2021 LOL'Cause maybe the expected all the cues from the sessions
I like this music!The #balfeness !!!! Has outdone himself on Bad Boys for Life.
A nod to the last but brought it up to date.
This and 6 Underground has blown me away with Balfe’s musici can't understand, when someone is saying "it REMINDS of mw2" when those mentioned cues are completely re-used 1:1. it's identical, sometimes layered with mancinas themes. it doesn't just remind you of mw2 when lorne seriously uses the identical tracks or parts from mw2 -_-

@bayhem: then listen to it. i'm not a fan of lorne, but his work there is real fun and some real good action cues. with the themes of Zimmer, it's crazy that it's just a game. one of or maybe THE best work of lorne!Colleague of mine (a film score fan too) asked me which new Balfe score is better in my opinion - Bad Boys for Life or 6 Underground?

Honestly - and as much as I praised BB3 - I couldn't decide......

Both movies have a lot of songs, which is something I don't like. Look at Transformers. There are songs too but they don't overshadow the score. The score is still the star and that's why people flood Steve's Twitter with praise. Day after day.

But sadly for Lorne, his recent work in film WAS indeed overshadowed by the random songs. If they didn't rely on songs so much, I'm sure that 6 Underground would've been the crown jewel for Lorne. It's a big, big movie that begs for equally big and memorable score (though we can't really expect Transformners-syze score).

At the end of the day, Lorne did good on 6 Underground but it was just a small sign of what COULD have been.....Some of the action bits, yeah......
This right here is my single biggest issue with Balfe as a composer. And with the recording sessions clips he posts it is truly a mystery. Tinfoil hat on I'd say he skimps on the budget and hires those musicians just for a couple hours to shoot those clips for PR and the actual score is all synth but that's a baseless claim of course lol...
....................

It's bigger than that.....

After all, this is a Bruckheimer production. His movies established Hans and the entire MV/RC sound. His movies are known for their awesome scores. Scores that are populrar with the ordinary viewers as well. But 2008 onward, things changed.....Back in the 90's and early 2000's every single Bruckheimer film had a spectacular score. Powerful, melodic themes, cues that stayed with you, scores that attracted the attention of the average Joe.

Nowadays tho, we don't have that. Hell, when was the last time a (newer) action score from MV/RC-related composer was praised the way 'The Rock' was praised?

Lorne's Mission Impossible? No. Not even close.

Personally, I like what Lorne did with BB3, especially with the emotional cues. But put it next to Mancina's work. I mean it's not even a contest. The Mancina score is one memorable, melodic track after another. There's not a single boring track. Every track is a banger.

But the newer scores? They have two or three tracks that are good and everything else is.......utterly forgettable.

I blame it on the lack of themes. Orchestra or not, more scores need to have actual themes.Some cues sound like Speed 2Guess I'm the only person around here who hasn't listened to the Modern Warfare 2 score. So I can't really have an opinion on this matter..... lolThis right here is my single biggest issue with Balfe as a composer. And with the recording sessions clips he posts it is truly a mystery. Tinfoil hat on I'd say he skimps on the budget and hires those musicians just for a couple hours to shoot those clips for PR and the actual score is all synth but that's a baseless claim of course lol...Everyone keep mentionning mw2 but those drums reminded me of...skylanders giants lol! Just listen to the track « Arena battle » and let me know

Finally had a chance to listen to this. It's a good score, and I have to say Zanelli did a REALLY good job painting with JNH's colors, so to speak. There is surprisingly not that much direct quotation of Maleficent's themes but the stylistic imitation of that score and of JNH's style is on point. The choral and woodwind writing is especially lovely (it's rare to hear this many woodwinds in an RCP score) and the whole thing feels very organic.

However, I also found it strangely forgettable. Lots of well-executed underscore cues but no lasting highlights really, and Zanelli's new themes don't exactly stick in my mind. The action cues kind of stop and start rather than establishing a consistent flow the way I like. So I'm not sure how much I will be revisiting this one in the future.

Just saw Maleficent 2. There is a lot more Newton Howard in the movoe than there is on album.
I actually can't really understand why they didn't include the reprise of The Christening (the dinner scene) & the finale in the movie.

Zanelli's score is wonderful and I love it very much. But would have loved this on album

After listening to the whole thing, I can say that, while not as great as Newton Howard, Zanelli did a great job in here, adapting the original themes as well as creating some new ones.

The first half of the album drags a bit, but the second half is really fantastic!

Mephariel2019-10-19 08:06:25
I only listened to the first couple of cues so it is too early to form an opinion comparing it to JNH but I disagree the first half drags. Maybe because I love tender themes.

MrZimmerFan2019-10-19 14:08:39
Great work of Zanelli, if is not as good like JNH's Maleficent, is a tremendous work, with a terrific writing and orchestrations, even the most tender parts are terrific.

Zanelli is no James Newton Howard, but he did a fantastic job with writing a large scale fantasy score. I’ll even say that, while I think the first Maleficent is stronger overall, I personally like the action writing better here. Also 2 little things I’ve noticed;

1. The new theme here sounds fairly similar to the Father/Son tune from KFP3
2. 2:20-3:30 sounds like it may have been temped from the finale of Fantastic Beasts. (Or maybe I’m just crazy lol)

21. Hello, Beastie! (3:42)

Geoff Zanelli will be haunted by the specter of the PotC franchise until the day he dies, lol

Yeah lol one way or another... :P

I'm cautiously excited for this. Disappointed JNH didn't return but I trust Zanelli to do a good job here.

MrZimmerFan2019-10-10 11:29:45
I agree with you, Edmund, specially as a fan of JNH score

Andreas2019-10-17 16:19:21
Saw the film yesterday, the score relies heavy on JNH's themes and are used a lot throughout the film. Great choral work and a few standout action moments from Zanelli. For me this one felt similar as his approach to Dead Men Tell No Tales in case of using established themes.

mpolonest123 2019-10-17 16:22:55
@Andreas
JNH did such a great job with the first score, I honestly didn’t expect them to return to the same themes. Super happy to hear this!

MrZimmerFan2019-10-17 16:36:20
From what i hearing from the samples, it seems Zanelli make a great score.

JBSO992019-10-17 16:47:06
Just listened to the first track, "Mistress of Evil", and Zanelli kept some of the themes from James Newton Howard!

I'm so happy about this and if the rest score is like this, it could be one of the scores of the year.

Really excited about the full thing!

mpolonest123 2019-10-18 14:39:05
Really fantastic writing here, definitely taking inspiration from JNH’s style without trying to copy. And the adaptation of Maleficent’s “curse” theme from the first score in “The Phoenix” is definitely a highlight.
