Yeah this is a pretty fair assessment.<br><br>While Iíve found myself liking it less and less now that weíre hearing things like ME or Alita from Tom there are still some excellent tracks throughout. <br>(The Dark Tower, Collateral Damage, Guardian, It Will Fall, Roland of Eld)<br><br>My biggest gripe is with the purely sound design cues. They honestly go nowhere and end up padding the album out. What this score needed was a solid villain motif and some more orchestral underscore. Itís like one-half of the score is the more traditional side of Holkenborg whereas the rest falls into his early habit of just making noise.I give it a listen after three years, and i still like it.<br><br>If isn't as good as Mortal Engines or Alita, have a interesting aspects to enjoy: his main theme for Roland, some of the action cues are strong, even the dramatic ones (The Creed or Collateral Damage), some of the sound design are interesting.<br><br>Maybe the weakest aspect of the album, is the middle, some tracks are not that interesting to listen.woooooow <3From the "No Time to Die" podcast description...<br><br>"You can also be the first to hear exclusive score from Hans Zimmer and brand new recordings from the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra from Bond 25 brought to you from Decca Records."<br><br>First of six episodes is released on Wednesday 30th September!!that would be great
@GR7 that sounds really cool care to share?Hi! What's the story with track "Into Space"? They really copy track "Planet Descent" and name it that "Into Space"?I agree guys. Yhis album and parts of the experiments are vey enjoyable. I tend to listen to OST prriodically, and each year there is one or severall scores that replace what I listen the most, and so on... but Dark phoenix is one I can listen every time. <br>I made personal suites assembling music from the OST and mixing it with expremients, and it results in a 50 min suites album, I really like it.Same for me. I'm so happy ! :DA Celebration? It's actually on youtube now.
Got it. I assumed as much for the first 3. Thanks.hahahaha ... crack, sorry. Well so far there is no news of anything. Only the video that one track and one with Dave, but it's a preview.<br>I'm not sure how to get news on this, I really would like to get it hahaha.Isabel Suite = Isabel the Strong<br>Thadeous Suite = Thadeous<br>The Quest Suite = Let Us Quest!<br><br>End credits is probably ripped from the film.> Fair enough, but I know for a fact that Steve was inspired by Harry Potter because of the complete score track "Tavern Fighting (Part 1)". The end of that track has a direct reference to The Chamber of Secrets theme from the second film.<br><br>Nice catch. Those are very similar.<br><br>Btw, I have some "expanded" version of the score, which seems to be identical to the complete score on this site, aside from the fact that it's missing the last 4 tracks. Do those have equivalents in the regular release?Yes, I was referring to A Celebration. "It's out there" as in "it can be obtained unofficially". Were you referring to the Sia track? That is on Bleeding Fingers' site.
no, but you can find it on the bleeding fingers page.<br>it also doesn't look like planet eart: a celebration has a release :(Well, it's out there. Looks like no official release?> He's just posted in his Instagram story that in 9 days he has more interesting stuff coming.<br><br>Today's status says it's his "first published film score". That sounds like awesome news. I really hope this starts a trend...<br><br>I imagine having your own label-thing helps for stuff like expanded releases and sheet music?can you produce track for me?How do I become your apprentice? tremblayliam@yahoo.com

So this is what Mondo had to say about their massive screw up. I've never heard something so stupid in my life. If I had a direct line to Hans Zimmerman himself I'd call him about this. I'm sure he would be interested to know they butchered his album.

"Hi James,

I talked with the soundtracks department and here's what they had to say:

Weíve been made aware of a discrepancy between how the audio sounds on our album versus how it was previously released in original releases.

Our masters came directly from the studio and from original recording sessions, and we did not do any adjustments to the masters in post other than standard vinyl mastering process. But it seems any previous post production on those original releases, and cues used in the film itself, are absent from our release and may account for the differences you notice.

We currently do not have any plans on remastering the score."

Considering the recent issues with the isolated score on Days of Thunder's 4K release sounding very inconsistent, I do wonder if Paramount has simply been poor in preserving stuff. Especially when they mention the studio and not the record label, which might've had a better copy on hand (they did finally put the OST on digital recently, after all).

I am not going to hold Mondo responsible for this, especially considering they normally do just press the regular OSTs onto LPs. I don't expect them to be fully privy to if a score sounds fine or not, since they're often just given the stuff prepared for them. Besides, repressing records would be a super expensive ordeal, especially with how limited they're often designed to be now.

And honestly: since no one has made the comparison to Sherlock 2 yet, how bad sounding is it really? I'd much rather it be slightly off than it being complete trash like the Perseverance release of Rain Man was. If HZ was able to let that slide once, then he won't be so worked up over a small tempo issue.

Hybrid Soldier2020-08-09 23:35:03
You gotta realize one thing, most of the time, Hans doesn't even know about these releases (and honestly I think he doesn't care). Only a few labels like LLL play ball and have him involved (but as Hans doesn't own most of his music, they have no other reason than courtesy to do so).

As for MI2, people who complained about the "content" instead of the tech aspect of it were goddamn wrong. Yes, the film mixes / OST mixes are pretty different. Because you have suites & sometimes material specifically arranged for the album or alternate cues.

Mondo having released the final mixes (and I know what Paramount provided them, it's just exactly the same 2 CD set copy that leaked years ago), I have no problem if the content is different.

And that's the topic on which they answered, James. Technically, they're not wrong, but they are ditching the REAL problem, for which they are responsible for ! The speed issue is on them, not on what they got.

HunterTech2020-08-10 00:53:37
I guess it's only fair that they do shoulder the blame, considering again that releases like these aren't really the norm for them. I still wouldn't expect a recall and replacement, since it'd be a lot of money down the drain there. Their loss ultimately at the end of the day.

A bit disappointed about the content being the exact same as the leak, as I would've liked some of the film edits or at least the alt mixes I've seen pop up. I guess I'll just have to hope Disney does end up cooperating with LLL sooner than later.

Randy Watson2020-08-10 13:14:43
Who is Hans Zimmerman?

James2020-08-10 21:16:50
I'm confident he would care. Not saying he has any control over it.
I don't think Mondo should be making any money from this release. It ought to be canceled and removed from their website.

It's more than just a tempo issue. The tone is entirely off, and parts that were once pleasing to hear, now sound awful to my ears.

Seems Mondo is lacking the proper quality control. Hopefully this is a wake up call for them. If enough people avoid buying this album or return it, they'll get the message. I like to see capitalism work properly.

Magnus Rex reply Replies: 11 || 2020-05-31 06:30:38
Comparing the track times listed here, it seems (at first glance) that many of the tracks are edited down from the complete cues as heard on the bootleg. Could the listed track times be simply incorrect, or have edits been made to make the score fit onto four sides? I guess we can find out when the record ships in July.

Additionally, for those without a record player it sucks that a CD release was not possible for La-La Land. Whatever the reasons are for that, it's a bizarre situation that one independent label can release the same material on vinyl but another cannot on CD. Quite perplexing...

Mr Tweedy2020-06-01 09:12:19
Maybe the different time lengths is due to tracks slightly overlapping each other (as in many HZ soundtrack releases)?

Magnus Rex2020-06-02 05:30:44
It could be possible, but there would be too many seconds of overlap between some of these tracks for that to be a possibility in this specific case. I really hope they haven't cut down the tracks to fit on vinyl, otherwise the bootleg will trump it in terms of content.

Per2020-06-02 09:58:33
In sound quality (regardless of what certain peope might say about how great LPs sound; it's an analog format) the bootleg already trumps it I guess...

AnimalCMan2020-07-25 05:40:07
I just received this and can confirm that all the tracks play slightly sped up, you can see how much by comparing the length of Mission: Impossible Theme and Injection which are identical to the original score and both shorter. Iíve informed Mondo about this, but have no idea if or how theyíll handle it. Pretty disappointing as this is one of my favorite Zimmer scores.

Magnus Rex2020-07-25 07:26:43
@AnimalCMan - are they just played faster or is the pitch altered? Or both? If you hear anything from Mondo, I am sure there are others besides me that would like to hear why this was done. Please keep us informed.

AnimalCMan2020-07-25 08:48:35
@Magnus Rex - From what I could deduce comparing runtimes or a few tracks, there seems to be a speed up of about 7% and this also seems to naturally raise the pitch slightly. Whether or not this is easily noticeable to listeners who arenít familiar with the score is debatable, but I personally found transitions in certain tracks to feel off or jarring and especially faster tempo tracks to feel too fast. Iím still not sure how all this could have slipped by Mondo, but Iíll post an update when I hear from them.

Magnus Rex2020-07-26 05:52:27
@AnimalCMan - hmm, that is disconcerting. I have yet to play the album but judging by the track times (which I commented on in May), the producuers may have tried to squeeze more music onto a side by time-compressing it a little. Ideally, you want about 18 minutes per side of a 12" for optimum fidelity (the sound gets worse the nearer to the center the needle drifts) and they are already pushing that if my math is correct. Still, I am just theorizing; it would be interesting to know if Mondo have anything to say about it. Thank you for reaching out to them.

AnimalCMan2020-07-28 21:50:49
Well, Iíve gotten a response from Mondo and this situation is quite interesting. Having talked to their creative director, it sounds like there was no manipulation on their part. They were provided the original session recordings and transferred that exactly as it had been received.

I donít know how the process works of creating a master plate for records and if something could have gone wrong there, but according to what I was told it sounds as if these original recordings are faster, as strange as that sounds. I have no idea why theyíd be faster than the music in the film and on the original soundtrack, but there it is.

Thankfully, it sounded like some follow-up research would be performed on their part, but I donít know what this means in the long run. If anybody else has listened to this, feel free to provide feedback here or directly to Mondo as speaking up when something is wrong is always valuable.

Magnus Rex2020-07-29 04:21:25
Thanks for that, Animal. A very curious situation. I haven't opened my LPs yet and if they are sped up, I have no real interest in playing them. I might drop Mondo a line and see what else they have to say.

James2020-07-31 02:58:54
I sent Mondo an e-mail as well. Its definitely sped up.

James2020-08-01 23:08:06
Mondo only offered to send me a return label and a refund. No info yet on if they plan to fix it. :-/

Per2020-05-27 00:00:21
So useless really, yeah... :(

AlitaFan2020-05-27 00:46:56
Why only expanded?

The product page says:
"Mondo Music, in conjunction with Hollywood Records, are proud to present the premiere vinyl pressing of Hans Zimmerís complete score to MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 2."

So, it's the complete score... isn't it?

HunterTech2020-05-27 02:17:32
Thanks to the way certain cues have to correspond to their album titles instead, it's hard to tell currently if this actually has everything from the film. Doesn't help that certain album suites are most certainly not here, and there's likely alt mixes that could've been included. We'll just have to see.

I get the feeling the reason this is LP only for now is due to Disney (who own Hollywood Records) being allowed to fully oversee this specific release. Any digital and CD re-releases are probably in legal lingo with Paramount, hence why the OST isn't available for streaming currently.

Jasper2020-05-27 10:56:44
Time to buy a record player guys!

Honestly couldn't be more happy about this.

Jerry2020-05-28 07:23:02
Any chance of a CD or Digital release?

Hybrid Soldier2020-05-28 07:42:33
No.

Randy Watson2020-05-28 09:26:06
@Jerry

At the Film Score Monthly message board, MV said that La La Land has been trying to release this one for years but got shot down by the studio. So sadly, a CD release won't happen for now

Nicolas, Webmaster2020-05-28 09:48:36
Next time, we can expect a wax cylinder release... :(

Per2020-05-28 09:59:02
.. and people wonder why there's "bootlegs" out there...

Ds2020-05-28 22:01:59
Why would a studio allow a vinyl release but no CD or digital release? That's utter nonsense. Almost like they're refusing to make money.

Scorefan2020-05-29 15:45:05
LLL made MI 1 Complete. So they are trying to make MI 2 Complete. That could move Varese to make MI 3 Complete. But studio (Disney) don't want it.

Kalman2020-06-06 11:11:04
Nostalgia has its place but when it turns into stupidity it gets annoying. Vinyl only release, c'mon!... I was so happy when CDs replaced vinyls and now we should be glad that that dated and impractical technology comes back? It's a NO for me!
