Check out Debbie Wiseman's Warriors from 2000 and you'll get a much more elaborate version of this music.
I cant say that this chorus reminds me of anything I have heard Zimmer done before. And I have played all his scores to death.I agree that Gap is the best track. My main complain with this score is that it feels that Zimmer composed it on autopilot. For me those choirs sounded too much to Electro's Theme in TASM. Is too standard and has very few remarkable moments. The movie itself lacks of personality and the score is part of that problem. I think they just wanted "dark" and hired Zimmer for making his dark ostitatos.I thought I read somewhere Armageddon was the last bay film that hgw was a part of<br>===============================<br><br><br>Well, Bay and HGW were not exactly best friends during Armageddon. Bay is very demanding and tough. HGW is also not a shy dude. He is an opinionated guy who stands his ground, as you can tell by his interviews. He reminds me of Mancina…..He's not afraid to speak up and have his opinion heard. And just like Mancina, his relationship with the Bay/Bruckheimer family seemed to be...….a bit complicated. Yet, he worked on Bad Boys 2 and Deja Vu. Now, it is possible - tho not likely - that Bay didn't even know that HGW did some work on BB2. Maybe it was just a favor for Steve and Trevor. Under the table, so to speak..... Personally, I don't believe that's the case. Whatever the truth, this is a great example of how different those composers are. Trevor and Steve work great with Bay/Bruckheimer and they always deliver great results. While composers like HGW and Mancina have problems with more demanding filmmakers. And apparently they don't even like action cinema. I don't necessary blame them, even though Mancina certainly didn't do himself any favors by trashing the genre and the people who back in the 90's gave him a shot to prove himself as a composer.Love John Powell. But he is not even close to Williams. Williams made his mark on every genre of film scoring. He freaking turn a holocaust movie score into a masterpiece for the ages.<br><br>Today, that score would have been some generic sound design.<br><br>Powell is an incredibly gifted orchestral composer. But he doesn't have the dimensions of someone like Williams. <br><br>You fools, the tracklist was but a scam. The tracks simply wanted to EAT you.
Yeah, while this does have a great deal more substance than most of the work Hans has done the past few years, I struggle to say it's a genuinely *good* score.<br><br>I mean, within the first minute I'm reminded of Dunkirk, then we get a pretty standard Zimmer/Balfe buildup we've heard a million times since Inception... and it doesn't get hugely better from there.<br><br>I will definitely give Zimmer credit for the unique and genuinely creative use of female choir in some of the cues, though.Not to disagree for its own sake, but I think Powell has been up there with the greatest film composers since the first HTTYD score. I just wish he'd take on more projects.Yeah, Jesus. This is a prime example of why I'm tempted to think John Powell is more talented than even Williams (yes, I went there).There's so, so many great themes in the HTTYD scores. And he almost never lets a moment go by where he isn't stating or restating or developing one or more of them (although honestly that's true of a ton of Powell's scores and not an exclusive feature of HTTYD). You can never get bored listening to these, there's always something interesting around the next corner.I got confirmation HGW only wrote Haitian House Shootout (with the help of Mel Wesson). The same ideas were edited into the shorter cue Zoepound, so I'd say you can add this one to his credits.<br><br>Credits on IMDB mentions Paul Linford on the Main Titles.<br><br>Trevor Morris helped Jablonsky on the Ferrari Causeway Chase.<br>Jablonsky worked, for sure, on the Hallway and Helicopter Inserts.<br><br>100% sure Rabin worked on Tapia, Tapia Pissed Off, The Stuff, Wiretap Results, Ocean, Dead Bodies #2, Heart to Heart, Breaking Into Mortuary, Syd's Cover Is Blown, Tapia Has Syd (without Inserts), Prep for Tapia Sneak, Cuba Chase, Guantanamo (those tracks are on the Rabin only-bootleg).
Hoping for the Rocketman score to get a release. Loved the score in the movie. A masterful achievement by John Powell and his crew, as others have said!Just finished watching the movie, and while it's not much more than fine, it's sure as hell better than every other Star Wars movie that's come out since The Force Awakens (minus the ugly fucking visuals). <br><br>However the score is absolutely amazing. Powell's adaptation and development of the new Han Solo theme from Williams is flawless, the callbacks to other themes from the series are mostly appropriate (and good on him for not using the Force theme once!) and Powell's original material is fresh and exciting in a way that even Williams himself hasn't been able to pull off with the new films. <br><br>Powell might very well be up there with the greatest film composers if he continues to produce work like this from now on (which from HTTYD 3 seems very possible!)Some of the synth work throughout is definitely like Spirit. The first couple minutes of Coda are one example.It's only suggestions based on about few dozen listened scores of those composers.<br>By the way known that HGW was part of it.

I've been listening to the complete score for the past few days and I've been reading a lot of comments and articles about it...….And my conclusion is: this IS the greatest action score in film history. I honestly can't think of a better score for a straight-up action movie (though Armageddon, Eraser and Broken Arrow come close).

Most of today's action scores are, frankly, very forgettable and bland. No themes, no actual melodies, no consistency, nada. You can't even compare them to The Rock. The Rock seems to be in a league of its own. Completely untouchable.

Anyway, I would love to hear your thoughts on the matter, folks :) Is there a consensus among MV/RC fans on The Rock? Is it the best? Or I'm alone on this and I'm just an overreacting fan? lol.

One of the greatest action scores for sure. I love The Rock as a movie was well. The 90s had some of the greatest action movie scores ever. You got The Rock, Twister, Face/Off, Armageddon, etc.

But yeah, The Rock is awesome. The opening theme is probably Zimmer's best in the genre. Then you have "The Chase" and "Rockets Away" providing sustained entertainment.

I love this score and I don't want that called into question, but I can't help thinking scores like Crimson Tide and The Peacemaker take the same basic sound and do a better job with it. Those two are mostly Hans, obviously, and they just sound more cohesive. I have nothing against any of the composers who worked on The Rock, but to my ears, the Nick Glennie-Smith stuff sounds obviously different from the Hans Zimmer stuff, and they both sound very different from the Harry Gregson-Williams stuff. And the transitions are a tad jarring at times. I've never seen anyone else post this opinion before, though, so I may be the only one!

Without a doubt. I grew up in the 90s and I was there for all of it. Truly one of the best decades for film music (and for cinema in general). I mean, it's the decade that changed action scores forever. Exactly because of scores like The Rock, Twister, Armageddon, Crimson Tide and The Peacemaker. Granted, Harold Faltermeyer kinda started it all in the mid-80s with his work on Top Gun, Tango and Cash and Beverly Hills Cop 2, but it was Hans and his team who really got the ball rolling. By the way, I'm super happy that Hans and Faltermeyer are teaming up for Top Gun 2. At least according to IMDb....

Agreed. It's the ultimate Zimmer power anthem. I know the younger generation knows Hans mainly from his work on comicbook movies like Batman and Spider Man, but for me, 90's Zimmer will always be the best Zimmer. And my favorite Zimmer :))

That's actually very interesting. Never thought of it that way. And you're right. For those who are well aware of the overall MV/RC sound, there is indeed a difference between the Zimmer style and the Glennie-Smith style. However, I think that the two styles blend pretty well in The Rock. The movie itself allows for that. So I would argue that, while watching the actual movie, the two styles work very well together and they complement each other.

But listening to the score alone, yes, I can definitely see where you're coming from. The differences are obvious. Having said that, I still consider it to be a masterpiece of action scoring. And not only action. The emotional bits are great too. JADE is an extremely beautiful and tender track :))

P.S. The Peacemaker is on my personal TOP 5 of the greatest action scores of all time. I can't believe the score is not as popular as The Rock. Same for Eraser, by the way. Watch the movie again on a good sound system and you'll be blown away by the awesome Silvestri score. I really wish those two scores were more popular with the public......

Though there are differences, I think HZ & NGS styles mix together rather well.

Tracks like "Fort Walton", "Goodspeed Tracks Jade" or "Jade" are exceptions for sure. Apart from these, most tracks blend very well, imo.
It's very different from Armageddon for exemple, when team Trevor and team Harry had very different styles (big anthems & guitars VS darker material and more subtle theme developments) and also different sound equipments (I can tell immediately who did what thanks to the sound banks they used). The Rock doesn't suffer from those extreme differences imo.

We fans here listened to those scores for over 20 years and we've learnt how to spot each composer (thanks to this website and all the infos on each track we got over the years). I'm not sure I could have noticed all those details back in 1996, or even 10 years ago.

Nonetheless, The Rock is one of the greatest action scores ever. While more coherent scores like Crimson Tide or The Fan grew on me over the years, The Rock keeps a very special place in my heart.

There was no time to make demos !

Hans started with "Seal Attack" in fact, before it even became the Opening Titles !

Don Harper left the project in the middle of it and had HGW redo most of his things !

HGW told me, back in 2006 during a chat, that Nick and Hans spent most of their time writing cues together for The Rock, while he wrote a lot of action cues from the middle of the movie.
He also remembered working on a "San Francisco Chase" with Don Harper.
The official credits found here by Hybrid confirms all this!

Well it's completely legit and 100% real, but these 2 cues posted here by Hybrid are missing from the sessions:

40.In The Tunnels (Alternate 2) (1:31)
41.Fort Walton, Kansas (Alternate) (1:40)

With these two cues the sessions would be complete.

This is not entirely legitimate. For one, it's partially made from an older fan edit which crossfades some cues. The real sessions have clean openings and endings to each piece. In addition the "demos", as far as I can tell, are almost all fake (or else Hybrid would have surely added them here). They sound nothing like The Rock score. The only real demos are the I, II and III pieces, which come from an old NGS promo.

Given that a certain someone keeps leaking recording sessions that more often than not end up getting an official release (Wyatt Earp, Jennifer 8, The Ghost and the Darkness, etc.), perhaps a label is going to release this at some point in the future? Who knows; the two occurrences may not be linked at all.

I always thought that the only two really Zimmer cues in the score are the opening and Hummel's speech. But come to think of it you must be right about Fort Walton, Kansas. :)

Little HZ comment regarding his involvement on The Rock :

"I ended up writing the main themes, the scene where they all get killed... I think I had a hand in most cues by the end. I can't really remember all that much. Jerry, M. Bay and Nick was just not a good combination. Yes, I seem to remember the Hummel speech, and Harry learned how to write a car chase. Maybe a hundred times :)"

Interesting timing. I was wondering about Zimmer's involvement here just a couple days ago. I imagine the album track "Hummel Gets the Rockets" has a lot of Hans in it, and I know his theme is used a lot throughout, but I didn't know he was involved with the cues, really. Thanks for the info.

Exactly. The cue I notice immediately is the love theme between Goodspeed and his wife. A slower and more romantic version of Fort Walton, Kansas. I believe would be titled "Marriage"

Played as Goodspeed and his wife talk about getting married in San Francisco just after making love.

@Anon: Recording sessions are not necessarily complete. For example, the Blade recording sessions by Mark Isham are not complete, but are still labelled as such as they contain alternate and unused cues. The alternates and film mixes on this disc have NOT been released before and are NOT on any other version. The name of "recording sessions" is therefore more fitting, to differentiate it from the "expanded" versions out there.
