To this day I think this is the best score album Iv'e ever heard

LarsF reply Replies: 1 || 2018-10-27 12:59:53
I bought a release of the film Inception which had an extra dvd with bonus features - like the soundtrack above in 5.1 dolby.

But it sound so horrible in sound quality in between that I hope if normal cd stereo version is better.

Heavy distortion like lofi bitcrushing on passages. Fluttering strings and trashed all over. So bit of a warning from me if this cd is as bad. Maybe somebody can confirm what is the case? is publisher of this dvd collection I bought.

LarsF2019-07-12 08:06:08
This is a sad story, after sending WarnerBros 4-5 emails reporting this badly rendered Dolby 3/2/1 audio - not even a response in 10 months reporting every other month.

Something in the LFE channel seems to disturb Dolby encoding making compressing flutter in the same frequencies around 20-30 Hz.

I'm done buying warner bros productions all over. Really not what I expected - getting audio in the range of 96 kbps mp3 or something buying the soundtrack to the film.

Hans does some kinda interesting improv on the guitar in "Time" in this version (from 2:45-3:45). Check it out: com/watch?v=xdYYN-4ttDg

Frenchans reply Replies: 13 || 2015-04-04 21:46:26
Am I the only one not to understand the success of this score? I listened it again and again but except "Old Souls" and "Time", I'm disappointed.
Even these two tracks are not extraordinary !

I think that it has nothing to do with the masterpieces The Thin Red Line, King Arthur, Gladiator, TDK, The Last Samurai ect

Zimson2015-04-04 22:08:42
You don't have to like it. Music is experienced subjectively, the next person is going to tell you that Dark Knight or King Arthur for example, aren't masterpieces.

My suggestion: Get yourself some good speakers and listen to "Mombasa" and "Waiting For A Train" again. If possible get the files in lossless quality. It does make a difference if you play them on studio quality speakers.

Frenchans2015-04-04 23:08:30
Zimson, I agree with you, it's subjective but I'm trying to find out if some people think as me about this score beacause I'm not see a lot of other. I just find it strange that the Inception's soundtrack is more known (and renowned) than Spirit or Black Rain for example.

Adam2015-04-05 00:45:29
listen to the complete score. It's much better!!!

Ds2015-04-05 01:03:42
Frenchans, I think it also has to do with the success of the movie. Inception is one of the best movies in the last few years, combining a great original screenplay with blockbuster action and awesome cast. Its music was great a lot of people know it more than they know Spirit or Black Rain. If King Arthur had met the success of Gladiator, people would know and love its music as much as they love Gladiator ´s...

Frenchans2015-04-05 01:57:34
Ds I think you're right, it's linked with the success of the movie (amazing!) but I'm sorry to see that Inception is consistently mentioned in articles about Hans, by forgetting to mention Da Vinci Code, The Thin Red Line ect

But it's clear that I see again King Arthur ONLY to listen his wonderful soundtrack :)

Boldizar2015-04-05 15:26:47
Or you know... The score is just good

Ds2015-04-05 18:13:43
Boldizar, I think you're missing the point. Of course this score is good. Very good, even. But a lot of HZ score are also incredible, yet journalists and bloggers always mention Inception or Gladiator, rather than King Arthur, Broken Arrow, Spirit or Pearl Harbor. And that's not because Inception is better, it's only because Inception or Gladiator are much more famous and beloved by general audience.

Eleonora2015-04-05 21:11:51
same here frenchans, same thoughts about interstellar aswell. i just can't find the love for his newer scores. too much synth, too much "techno" rhythm in it, no melodies. just a huge huge huge hype.

i'm missing scores so much like thin red line, gladiator, pearl harbor, last samurai. and i always wonder why these are not so hyped.

sometimes i see how everyone screams about interstellar "woooooooooow the piano soloooo so amaaaaazing". i mean come on man, piano solo?! and i wonder if they ever heard anything else from zimmer and his past works.

Frenchans2015-04-05 23:36:35
Eleonora, I think that Hans wants to renew. Interstellar soundtrack is good but finally pretty empty; Like Chappie, Man of Steel, Inception (sorry :) )

The same musical chords which were used in The Last Samurai, Crimson Tide, POTC, King Arthur, (and more) were great !
Ok, that are alike, but it's so goood !

Eleonora2015-04-06 12:40:36
zimmer renew himself just like the whole music industry by producing only bad music. everyone wants to be "cool" by this mainstream techno thing out there. i'm always shaking my head when i see how zimmer is soooo proud to be with pharell together. to renew yourself is great, but to go that badly? to renew sth is like going a step forward, but he is going so many steps backwards. no beautiness, no epicness, no structure in his music nowadays. and the immense use of the fake orchestra is cheap. i'm sorry to say this, but it sounds totally like crap and like a cheap movie and not like something like a huge movie.

i hope he wokes up and start doing again his epic scores. because of them he became famous and not because of that techno shit. but glad to see that there are other users here aswell thinking like me.

Frenchans2015-04-06 13:14:52
I didn't think that Hans is influenced by the musical actual trend, indeed it's very possible too.

I always hope he releases a real epic and melodious score every time. Maybe Batman v Superman ? We'll see...

Gerry2015-04-06 14:21:52
I really like this score! Hans rules!

Passerby2015-11-02 11:10:15
Eleonora: I love most of Hans Zimmer's works, but about your last comment, I have to say...this soundtrack is in the techno style mainly because of the film. Techno music just suits it better. Also, I do not think Hans Zimmer became famous because of his more orchestral works, but because of how well his music fits with the films they go with. That's the main goal of a film composer.

One question: Is the "Don't Think About Elephants" cue (Thx to Hybrid btw) exactly the one used in the hallway fight scene? I'm trying to do a isolated score video.

Zimson2014-11-19 02:25:26
I figured it out by now.

badbu 2014-11-19 09:29:12
Destabilization ?!

Medigo2014-11-19 12:16:38
Yeah "Don't Think About Elephants" is from later in the movie; the final action piece in the snow fortress
(and even then its not complete)

"Destabilization" sounds like it and it the right track for the scene. (although thats only available on the sessions, and the movie has an edit to the track anyway)

Zimson2014-11-19 13:17:27
Yep, Destabilization is the cue. Though, there is still a major difference between 1:09 and 1:16. It seems to be an alternate version of the cue used in the movie.

GREAT new trailer for Interstellar!!! I wonder if Junkie did any of the music for the trailer -- there a melody that's awfully similar to a track from 300 I seem to hear. Perhaps not.

Hybrid Soldier2014-05-16 23:12:39
The trailer music is the track "Evy Reborn" from V For Vendetta by Dario Marianelli...

...2014-05-16 23:12:53
Junkie didn't compose squat for this trailer.
The music is by Dario Marianelli and comes from V for Vendetta

badbu2014-07-15 19:44:18
any news about the score?? can't wait :( 4 month....

Anonymous2014-07-15 23:17:56
Hans just finished it, I was told from a friend of his

Saurabh2014-07-16 00:48:12
When can we expect something from the Interstellar front? Perhaps some mockups/demos on the official site like the version of Dream is Collapsing on the Inception site? The wait is becoming unbearable.

badbu2014-07-16 08:46:44
merci ;)

Lambegue2014-07-16 10:24:28
With Nolan and Zimmer, I suppose we won't know really what to expect until a few days before the release of the movie at best.
It doesn't bother me : first, I like the waiting. And then, there are enough good scores by other composers this year to fill the void :)

bro2014-07-16 11:41:03
Hybrid could you perhaps just figure out of Lorne has anything to do with the work on Interstellar? It wouldn't be the same to have a pure nolan-zimmer film without him around.

Hybrid Soldier2014-07-16 13:18:54
Lorne wasn't supposed to work on it, Hans wanted to do it alone, "very personal"...

In the meantime, what happened ? I can't know for sure, there are so many parameters that can change plans... So who knows... We'll see !

NM2014-07-16 21:59:00
I'm excited to see what he comes up with. The Spiderman 2 score was very inventive, despite being for a horrible film, and the interview where he said he's throwing the 'endless string ostinatos' and 'big drums' in the bin bodes well. Space and gravity and all that amazing stuff is so exciting and interesting to me, coming from a theoretical physics background, so I'm looking forward to November.

Lambegue2014-07-16 22:59:01
Hybrid, correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't it be the first time that Zimmer works all alone on a score ?

bro2014-07-16 23:02:37
probably not the first time, but it would probably be the biggest film he has done completely solo for the last 10 years

antovolk2014-07-20 00:04:09
So Hans may have been involved in trailer 2 after all it he may have recorded an additional organ layer to the Evey Reborn track which is not present in the original!

Tried to extract it from the 5.1 audio of the trailer. Then listen to the trailer. Then listen to the original Evey Reborn again closely...

Ds2014-05-08 19:49:52
Any word on Hans' involvement on the upcoming Interstellar trailer? :-) I read it is supposed to premiere in front of Godzilla next week.

Hybrid Soldier2014-05-08 19:51:41
Unfortunately Ds it won't feature any score... :( They keep it super secret so it'll just have trailer music or some other piece (which Hans told me was cool though lol)...

RealFfingMusic2014-05-08 20:45:50
As long as the score (and the film) is cool, we're cool with it.

Saurabh2014-05-08 21:02:58
If they're so secretive about the score then why attach a snippet of it to the teaser trailer in the first place? I'm fine with trailer music if it's in the vein of Mind Heist. And then they can pull out the big guns with the final trailer like MOS.

Hybrid Soldier2014-05-08 21:04:54
Well the first trailer was an old idea Hans did in early 2013...

Hans is working day (and mostly night :)) right now on the score...

Saurabh2014-05-09 00:01:51
I hope Hans keeps that idea in the final score then. It was quite ethereal, poignant and yet optimistic as it builds up to the organ crecendo when the rocket soars.

A quick thought crossed my mind, about the Oscars of next year. Among the potential nominations:

John Powell for How to train your dragon 2...
Hans Zimmer for his new collaboration with Nolan...
Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross for their new collaboration with Fincher...

It's 2010 all over again!

Mr. Knowitall2014-03-19 14:46:28

It's called Interstellar -_-

"Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross for their new collaboration with Fincher"

It's implied that you didn't otherwise you would have said Interstellar

Ds2014-03-19 17:43:49
I didn't write it because I was making a parallel with the 2010 Oscar nominations, and I wanted the comparison to be obvious. It's not the title that matters, but the combination composer/director.

Yes (though Paradox does use Zimmer's Time theme).

MacArthur2013-12-30 00:33:33
And 528491 also uses Zimmer's Dream is collapsing

Mike2013-12-30 02:38:51
Only the BRAAAAHM. The part of the track people actually care about is Balfe. :P

i know this is very, very premature but does hybrid or anyone know which "additional composers" are attached to interstellar? i know balfe did a lot on inception and i'm wondering how much an influence (if he's on the project) he'll have on interstellar's score.

Mike2013-12-29 23:31:00
Difficult to say. He did some heavy lifting on Inception, but he barely did anything original on The Dark Knight Rises; he just copied and pasted Hans' music onto the scenes. So it could be anywhere from doing a lot to barely doing anything.

Spence2013-11-30 22:08:20
TASM2 will have zimmer's music, he confirmed in an interview that he was asked to score the trailer. :) Not sure about intersteller. Hybrid?

Mike2013-12-01 23:20:33
According to the ever-reliable Wikipedia, Hans Zimmer had this to say regarding Interstellar:

“We had this sort of conversation about—you know, nine years we spent in our Batman world. The textures, the music, and the sounds, and the thing we sort of created has sort of seeped into other people’s movies a bit, so it’s time to reinvent. The endless string of sonatas need to go by the wayside, the big drums are probably in the bin. So right now it’s sort of the time where I’m pondering what else we can do.”

Edmund Meinerts2013-12-01 23:49:28
Sounds promising. But experience has taught me that Zimmer's words and his music rarely, if ever, match up...

Anonymous2013-12-02 00:27:38
Nothing wrong with Wikipedia so long as there's references cited

Mike2013-12-02 04:47:04

Edmund Meinerts2013-11-12 00:04:33
I agree, it's not a shameless rip or anything, just a small influence.

Mike2013-11-12 01:03:15
Well, the concept was in the script of the film itself. I mean, I guess you could say Zimmer had a hand in it, sure, but a BRAAAAHM at the very end of the track doesn't make that track any less Lorne, really.

MacArthur2013-11-12 01:36:29
Ok Thanks Mike

new X-Men Trailer featuring Time

Hybrid Soldier2013-10-30 09:32:48
Time ?

More like Journey to the Line... LOL

trent easton navarro2013-10-30 10:44:17
Looks like even the Zimmer fans can't tell one score from another :P

Frisbee2013-10-30 11:24:29
Speaking of these two cues, it's remarkable how every incarnation of Thin Red Line themes have become hits (again!) in later HZ works. Those were some gold notes.

el barto2013-10-30 12:20:16
Yeah and yet, those people who are making these new cues to these hits, don´t know about these gold notes.

a shame, his older work was so much powerful and beautiful than what we`re getting today...

Hybrid Soldier2013-10-30 12:26:12
Everyone forgot the shameful rip/temp in Matchstick Men, but HZ managed to make everyone forget ! ;)

Hybrid I'm a little confused about this one people are saying that Balfe did a lot of this score could you list the ones he had a hand on on this score cause usually I refer to this one. So if you don't mind could you list what Composer did what and if there were any solo composers work on this one.

Mike2013-09-19 01:54:13
I'm not Hybrid (obviously), but I can help here. I will add that now that I know you've been judging it by the contents of this 50 minute release, I can understand why you insist Lorne Balfe only did a bit. I thought you were referring to the entire film score, of which Balfe did a considerable amount. But I'll start with the CD.

1. Half-Remembered Dream = Zimmer and Balfe (Balfe arranging Zimmer's "Time" theme with the BRAAAAHM sound)
2. We Built Our Own World - Zimmer and Balfe (again, Balfe arranging Zimmer)
3. Dream is Collapsing - Just Zimmer. This one is actually a theme suite.
4. Radical Notion - Zimmer and Balfe (Balfe arranging Zimmer)
5. Old Souls - Just Zimmer. Again, this is a suite, not a cue.
6. 528491 - Just Balfe. It's a version of his Robert Fisher theme, though it does use the BRAAAAHM at the very end.
7. Mombasa - Just Zimmer. This is a suite, however.
8. One Simple Idea - Just Lorne Balfe. It's half of Lorne's so-called "Kick It" suite.
9. Dream Within a Dream - Zimmer and Balfe (Balfe arranging Zimmer)
10. Waiting for a Train - Zimmer and Balfe (Balfe arranging Zimmer)
11. Paradox - Zimmer and Balfe (Starts off with Balfe's arrangement of Zimmer's Time theme, then goes into Balfe's Saito theme).
12. Time - Just Zimmer. This is a suite.

Now, judging by these crediting, I can legitimately see why you insist Lorne only did a bit of stuff. The album is indeed mostly Zimmer music. It's the whole score, as heard in the film, where Lorne had a lot of influence. But I'll have to give examples later.

MacArthur2013-09-19 06:18:06
Ok. Thank you very much Mike. and from the Complete score It does seem like Balfe did arrange some of that for the scene and write some themes for the people. But just 1 question would you say for the complete score that Zimmer did at least 80% of that score with Balfe arranging like the dark knight rises?. (Of course I know Zimmer did the whole TDKR score). and that this cd is 95% Zimmer (The Original Release)

Mike2013-09-19 15:23:24
I would say that Lorne Balfe was notably more involved with Inception than TDKR. With TDKR, he only "wrote" music for one cue that I recall, and even that one had Zimmer music in it at the same time. The rest was arranging Zimmer material, often times just copied and pasted exactly as Hans wrote it, so all in all Balfe didn't do much in there. TDKR is 100% Hans Zimmer to me.

With Inception it's tricky, because not only did Lorne essentially do all the scoring to picture (under Hans' directions and using Hans' material), but as I've said, he wrote a few of the recurring themes. And in addition, many cues (like Thief and a Forger, Strategy, and Mr. Charles) are only loosely based on Hans' themes, being mostly Lorne. It's impossible to say precisely in those cases. But overall I would say (it might surprise you) that Inception is about 65% Zimmer, 35% Balfe.

Mike2013-09-19 15:29:54
I would say the CD release is 85% Zimmer.

MacArthur2013-09-19 17:40:54
Thanks Mike! So that's why he got the nomination is because the CD release was mostly Zimmer the Complete score is Zimmer & Balfe But Balfe Under Zimmer's direction. I get you.

Thank you very much.

MacArthur2013-09-19 17:42:05
But would you say that The 35% Balfe Did was Supervised by Zimmer. Last Question by the way and Thank you.

Mike2013-09-19 23:33:14
Of course it was. Zimmer has to give the music a pass before it's used in "his" score. ;)

got a question here...
the Oblivion blu-ray's got isolated score on it, at least that's what they say at
so if you have the inception blu-ray and you have a really great home theater system, then you know that the 5.1 DTS score on the bonus disc is sooo much louder then the movie. the mix is so much more powerful. the end credits song is Dream is Collapsing. so on paper, it's the same music, not an alternate version, both 5.1, both sfx free, no different version and this and that... nothing. same music, but still the end credits version is a fart compared to the bonus disc mix. it's simply not a question of volume level. with the bonus disc I can shake up the city around me.
so is it yust an isolated film mix score or is it the album version score mixed like the inception bonus stuff??
sounds fucking ridiculously stupid if you don't know what I'm talking about I know that, but it's completely different experience.
starwaves would be cool...

Ds2013-08-13 14:31:54
Matthew, i bought the blu-ray and as a bonus you can watch the whole movie with the score only (no dialogue, no sfx, only the music). It's not the album version.

There's an interesting alternate version of Time (neither Time itself nor "Welcome Home Mr Cobb") that the musicians are playing, at the end of one Inception video detailing the score.

cheesy2013-08-04 07:32:42
I don't think it's any different, it's just a raw recording session without the electronic elements mixed in.

But then I remembered who David was and what he did. And now I am giving him attention that he does not deserve.
