Come to Spain, please!!And that's why JNH never got a nomination for The Last Airbender.

Instead they nominated two and a half good scores. Critics didn't like it very much, but it got nominated for best score, because a part of the voters just LOVE Thomas Newman to death, and HAVE to nominate him no matter what.

So it's a mix of the movie's popularity with critics, and the composer's popularity with voters. Did Gavin Greenaway wright the melody for Devoe or did he just arrange Hans' theme?

Dawn2018-04-03 00:36:37
That's just my opinion but... If Gavin Greenaway had written the themes for Devoe, shouldn't he be credited for the other cues that contain those themes (Train, Chase, Peacemaker...)?
I think Devoe's Revenge is arranged by Gavin Greenaway, but it's mostly Hans content. Greenaway probably wrote many other tracks for this film (but they're not featured on this release).

Hybrid Soldier2018-04-03 00:51:20
Back in the days crediting worked differently.

If someone arranged a lot of music on a film, he wouldn't necessarly be credited on all those cues, but instead Hans would give them 100% of credit on one of the cues (even if said cue is actually using Hans' music). Like Devoe's Revenge here with Gavin, or Flashback & Fries for NGS on Drop Zone, or I Dreamt I Woke Up for Nick again on Beyond Rangoon.

Nowadays it's a little more realistic, the guy will rather get 25% or 15% or 10% or whatever of all he co-wrote...

Mike (OTM)2018-04-03 17:36:26
Wait, Hybrid, do they actually list those percentages somewhere, or is it a money thing?

Hybrid Soldier2018-04-03 20:22:01
It's rarely listed but on ASCAP or BMI, if let's say you have a Batman V Superman cue listed to Hans (ASCAP) & Andrew K (BMI), you can see that the percentage is 80% for ASCAP, then it's 80% Hans... ;)

If they both are BMI or both are ASCAP, you can't see, cause it'll be 100% for either ASCAP or BMI... lol

And yes, it's mainly a money thing. Percentages kinda depend. Let's just say the "convention" is mostly if an additional did a cue, like almost all of it, it'll be devided 50% / 50% with the main composer, cause the man basically for the additional the job. But sometimes it can be very precise, like 77,5% / 22,5% or whatever. Most of the time Hans will give 1 to 5% to various staff, music editors, a soloist or even a tech guy for he helped design Hans' gear... lol

8:30 of track 5 "Peacemaker" is absolutely incredible.
Such Emotion, Such Sadness, Such Passion.

Another classic from mr.Zimmer!!
I am very glad to own this album too.
Together with Crimson Tide and The Rock, this score complete a favorite trilogy of scores from the 90s".

Expanded release confirmed by LLL! Out on the 20th.

Anonymous2014-05-03 04:31:31
man, i just bought this one recently.... *sigh*

trent easton navarro2014-05-03 14:17:04
Excellent! My fave Zimmer action score. There's so much good stuff missing on the original release. And another bootleg I can toss out

Hispano2014-05-03 14:34:58
I never liked the cover, LLL might have changed this.

badbu reply Replies: 16 || 2013-12-04 11:46:01
never heard :( is it a must have? :)

Ds2013-12-04 12:53:27
I don't think so. If i had discovered it 10 years ago maybe it'd have a special place in my heart. But i discovered it a few months ago and there isn't anything really new in it. It's like a mix of Gladiator, Crimson Tide and a few others, but never as good as they are. Not unpleasing though :-)

Ds2013-12-04 12:54:37
(of course this is just my opinion, judging by the HZimmer.com rating, i guess other people are quite fond of it)

badbu2013-12-04 13:03:27
thanks for the info :)

Mikel Siw (a fan from Spain)2013-12-04 14:28:58
Masterpiece!!!

trent easton navarro2013-12-04 18:17:11
In my opinion one of Zimmer's best action scores. Hope LLL or Intrada will release an expanded version one dat

MacArthur2013-12-04 18:49:18
Love the score myself.

Edmund Meinerts2013-12-04 19:26:18
I think it is. It's a very important transitional score for Zimmer, still written very much in that mid-90s MV style but also pushing a little bit in the direction of the pseudo-Holst/Stravinsky stylings of Gladiator. Has some great Russian flavor to it as well. Very solid score.

MacArthur2013-12-04 19:58:36
I've listened to holst/Stravinsky it's some weird stuff I think Zimmer's stuff makes more sense than the 2 I mentioned.

Edmund Meinerts2013-12-04 20:12:54
Oh MacArthur...you really are a goldmine of unintentional comedy. "Some weird stuff"...priceless :D

MacArthur2013-12-04 20:33:53
Heh it's what i'm known for. lol. :)

MacArthur2013-12-04 20:34:51
I meant Hey* pops :)

Lambegue2013-12-04 20:41:12
I agree with what Edmund said, it's an important transitional score. It is very interesting to listen as a Zimmer fan. But I don't think it is one of his best works overall, and for a lambda listener, it's maybe not really a must have.

Mike2014-01-10 18:07:58
I would say it's a must-have, myself. Sure, certain tracks are slightly obnoxious in their bombast (Devoe's Revenge, for example), but the unadulterated, masculine epicness of the score (particularly in "The Chase") and the interesting extension of the Crimson Tide sound make it worth having, especially for fans of the "90's action" Zimmer. To me, if you like Crimson Tide and The Rock, you'll like this one.

Edmund Meinerts2014-01-10 23:30:25
Devoe's Revenge is my favorite track!

Mike2014-01-11 00:12:26
lol....I'm sorry. It's definitely not bad at all, but it gets a little grating at points, imo.

Mortifer V.2014-01-24 21:37:36
definitely a must have.

MacArthur reply Replies: 2 || 2013-09-01 19:26:17
It's funny Greenway uses parts of Zimmer's stuff in Devoe's Revenge

trent easton navarro2013-12-04 09:26:37
Why is that funny? That part i basically one of the themes of the score, so seems logical Greenaway used it

Edmund Meinerts2013-12-04 19:23:10
Yeah, and it's funny how Balfe uses Zimmer's stuff in Inception, and how Zanelli/Jackman/Orvarsson/Balfe/Gire/Sponsler/Glennie-Smith/ Badelt/Jablonsky/Djawadi/Neely/Morris/Hendrickson use Zimmer's stuff in the Pirates scores.

No, wait, actually, it's perfectly normal. What was the point of this again?

Ds reply Replies: 2 || 2013-10-30 22:56:06
Re-discovering this score right now, it's amazing how it sounds like Gladiator! I had never noticed that before.

MacArthur2013-10-31 02:46:58
Agreed!

Mike2013-12-03 19:35:39
There's also a lot of The Rock and Crimson Tide... ;)

trent easton navarro reply Replies: 0 || 2013-11-16 22:34:10
Decided to give this one a spin today. Still a wonderful score, truly one of Zimmer's best action scores.

I remember when I bought this one, I was still in high school. The day after I got it, the day at school seemed to last forever. I just wanted to go home and play it again and again. Here's hoping La La Land or Intrada will release an expanded version soon

This is a great soundtrack. This is Zimmer's greatest action score to date! And the choir pieces rival those in Crimson Tide. Great score for any Zimmer collector.

We said that the piano composition that the little girl performs is Frederic Chopin's Nocturne (=Nocturnal) Opus 55 No. 1 In F Minor.
Also the other piano composition that the guy performs (because he has lost his spouse and daughter) is again Chopin's Nocturne No.20 In C Sharp Minor. These compositions ain't Hans Zimmer. Frederic Chopin is the composer. AND THEY AIN'T SONGS EITHER. THEY ARE NOCTURNES!!!!!! DO YOU COPY THAT?

Or purchase an album with Chopin's Nocturnes at www.amazon.com

I would like to inquire what the classic song is in the movie The Peacemaker. It is the classic piano song I am referring to and I was wondering if this is a Hans Zimmer track as well?

The best Zimmer action-movie soundtrack after Crimson Tide. Excellent to listen in a boring afternoon. Be careful. It's very militaristic.
