AR Rahman on Collaborating with Hans Zimmer for ‘Ramayana’: ‘It Is Terrifying’
Composer A.R. Rahman talks about his experience scoring ‘Gandhi Talks’, and his upcoming collaboration with Hans Zimmer.
Academy Award-winning composers AR Rahman and Hans Zimmer have come together to create the sound behind Nitesh Tiwari’s two-part epic Ramayana, one of the most anticipated films in recent years. Fans got a glimpse of their creative partnership in a teaser that was released last year. But what is it like for the two legends to collaborate on the epic?
“It’s terrifying for both of us, scoring something so iconic and so important in the world,” Rahman tells The Hollywood Reporter India. Starring Ranbir Kapoor as Rama, Yash as Ravana, Sai Pallavi as Sita, Sunny Deol as Hanuman, and Ravie Dubey as Lakshman, Ramayana: Part One will open in cinemas this Diwali, followed by the sequel in 2027.
When asked how the two of them create, Rahman explained, “In the teaser, he had a soundscape, then I took that and added the Sanskrit verse and everything. What is complicated is that we’re taking something so epic, something that every Indian knows, and we’re giving them something new, from India to the world,” he adds.
As he continues to build the score alongside Zimmer, Rahman says that there was much he had to unlearn, casting aside conventional ideas of what Ramayana means, to create something unique. “While also absorbing a certain timeless quality that’s there in the culture. That’s our process, we are having fun.”
Hans Zimmer, Kara Talve & Anže Rozman set to compose HBO’s “Harry Potter” original score.
Hans Zimmer is set to compose HBO’s “Harry Potter” original score with Bleeding Fingers musicians Kara Talve and Anže Rozman.
“The musical legacy of ‘Harry Potter’ is a touch point for composers everywhere and we are humbled to join such a remarkable team on a project of this magnitude. The responsibility is something that myself, Kara Talve and Anže Rozman do not take lightly,” Zimmer said in a statement. “Magic is all around us, often just beyond reach, but as in the world of ‘Harry Potter,’ you simply must look for it. With this score we hope to bring audiences that little bit closer to it whilst honoring what has come before.”
Hans-Zimmer.com back on track
As you may have noticed, the website could not be maintained over the past 18 months, mostly due to technical issues. But after a few months of hard work we’re pleased to show the brand new version of the site for its 25th anniversary. Catching up is a long process but we could at least bring up to date our dear Hans Zimmer’s career. Others will follow. Feel free to give us any feedback or ideas, and we hope you enjoy it !

BLACK RAIN (REMASTERED EDITION)
Quartet Records, in collaboration with Universal Music Enterprises and Paramount Pictures, presents the restored and remastered 2-CD reissue of Hans Zimmer’s iconic score for Ridley Scott’s 1989 action-suspense film BLACK RAIN, starring Michael Douglas and Andy Garcia as two New York City cops who arrest a Yakuza member and must escort him to Japan for extradition.
BLACK RAIN was the first collaboration of Hans Zimmer with Ridley Scott, kicking off a creative partnership that would go on to produce some of the most thrilling film scores of the next two decades. For this new release of the BLACK RAIN score, we were fortunate to access archival studio materials that had been transferred within the last decade—sources that were unavailable for previous editions. These included the original 24″ and 32″ multitrack recordings. With these elements in hand, the score was carefully restored, cleaned and remixed to achieve vastly improved sonic fidelity. Among the discoveries in these transfers were several unexpected bonuses. This expanded edition has been a long time coming, and we’re thrilled that fans can finally experience Hans Zimmer’s early action score in its most complete and dynamic form to date.
Painstakingly produced by Stéphane Humez and Dan Goldwasser, mixed and mastered by Maxime Marion with the supervision and approval of the composer, the package includes detailed liner notes by Kaya Savas, including an exclusive interview with Mr. Zimmer.
