Hans Zimmer, Academy Award Press Statement
Conan Doyle realized that a successful lead character needs to play the fiddle. I wish all filmmakers did. It makes writing the score so much easier. With Guy’s great encouragement we took the orchestra out of the lofty spheres of the concert hall and brought them back to the pub, where they seem right at home. After all, There is no human emotion that has not – at one time or other – been profoundly expressed in a pub, and I’m so grateful that my peers at the Academy have recognized that. This is the year where we pit the humble banjo against the might of the orchestra.
Hans Zimmer

Franchement ces français, tous les mêmes, dès qu’il s’agit de râler ils se posent là ! :p
Indeed, the cd lacks some irish cues, like the one during the fight with the "electric shocker"… really felt like a pub fight, as Zimmer put it in his statement. Too bad it isn’t in the cd, there was room for it…

Dear Mister ZIMMER
I’ve been a longtime fan of yours for a longtime (french fan i must say), and a soundtracks fan too (goldsmith,Horner, Elfman and so on) / I’m writing here just to express my amazement (is that word right in english ?…lets just say i know the word "amazing but seeing a Z in amazement seems strange to me) so to express my amazement at your work for the Sherlock Holmes Movie soundtrack. I’ve just seen the movie two days ago and though i can say i have an ear for soundtracks composers (i like to guess who) i didnt recognize u at all of all the movie until ur name went on the screen at the end.
The score was a total shock, music fit to the XIX, violin for the detective, and the mix of Irish music and a sort of gyspsy music though gypsy is not the word i was looking for (in french we’re speaking of Tzinganes but i dont know if its the same word) music from the east…well it was outstanding…
I have but only one regret and it is for the CD soundtrack released : poor. there are some sections of the movie I cant find on the CD. score music, irish music….lets just say that once again, buying the stuff and being disapointed makes u feel like you’re part of the what i call suckers buyers.
where s the need to release a CD if not for having what u heard during the movie in its entire part. and not having to wait for a release of an "extra/bonus/complete/unrealesed/special/never heard CD
ahhhhhh these french people…..they are always complaining about something !
Anyway apart from the CD comments /// outstanding score, i was thrilled, thank you !
From Paris With Love !
I agree with Jaweco in everything, but not with "lazy Horner"…I think that he has lost inspiration…if you listen his score from 1988 (Willow) until "The Mask Of Zorro" or "Iris", he has been really original…but since "A Beautiful Mind" (even if is a good score) you can hear his repetition!!! "A Beautiful Mind" is the copy of the main theme from "Bicentennial Man" and so on!!! "Enemy At The Gates" present the classic theme of 4 notes with the French horn that he uses in every "war movie" (also in Avatar) so I think that he isn’t no more original…I consider original composer like Zimmer, Giacchino, Newton Howard, Desplat, Elfman, Silvestri, Marianelli or Powell (even if not so much)…That’s all!
Do you agree with me?!
Zimmer merits the Oscar for everything not just for "Sherlock Holmes" but for lots of scores that weren’t nominated…
Yup, maybe he has lost inspiration… anyway, he can’t or he doesn’t want to find new ideas, it’s a shame because he has done great things in the past. Concerning "Avatar", the "main theme" really sounds like a theme from "The Four Feathers", there is only a small change, the two are exceedingly close. I can understand that for someone who doesn’t know well Horner’s career, his "Avatar" may sound great, but for old fans, it’s a bit disappointing. And I do like Horner’s music, which makes it even more disappointing.
Concerning "Modern Warfare 2", well, I consider it a bit to be a side project. And I’m not a huge fan even if it’s quite cool. I know Zimmer hasn’t done everything in MW2 but, ah, honestly, I don’t really care. He may have written only themes, but it isn’t like he tries to pretend anything else. MW2 is a multi-composers project, given the nature of it (video game), why not ? I think "Holmes" is much more original, much fresher, trying, experimenting, etc (not saying that cymbalum has never been used before, but in action cues it’s quite daring !). On the contrary, in Horner’s case, it’s quite systematic, during the last years, he hasn’t done anything in which he explored new ideas, except maybe "Apocalypto". Auto-quoting wouldn’t be that frustrating if he didn’t do it almost every time…
