Hans Zimmer plays the piano of the future
Hans Zimmer, the creative force behind some of Hollywood’s best loved film music, including the Oscar-winning Lion King score, adjusts his chair in front of a sleek black instrument that looks something like the control panel of a stealth bomber.
He raises his hands to the monochrome keyboard and presses gently. A familiar strain emerges from it: the opening lines of the Dark Knight theme, but today it sounds unlike it has ever sounded before.

I can understand why some people might react that way to Desplat's music, as he tends to be very restrained and doesn't really go for the BIG emotional moments ("Dragon Flight" from the second Deathly Hallows is a rare exception). Personally I have a bit of a weird relationship with his music; he's always very interesting and puts a lot of cool ideas into his scores but there's always that detachment that stops me from really loving him as much as I do Zimmer, Powell, Williams, Horner, JNH, etc.
Or Obliviate. Or bag of themes from Golden Compass.
Desplat has lots of great moments and in few years he will be first Hollywood league, like Williams, Horner, Goldsmith, Elfman or Howard. Or Zimmer.
Overall – composers should focus on melody. When they have her, they could experiment with skulls of animals (WWZ) or trashing pianola (Sherlock Holmes).
No problem, these are the different senses and it does't mean something negative :) Maybe you'll find your way over the borders of The HZs someday. Also for me the Zimmer sound gave me the direction into the filmmusic, but after several MV scores I explored more of it like Goldsmith, Williams, Arnold, Elfman and and and… This is my story ;-)
Well, i like Desplat, isn't bad, i can't wait Godzilla (but honestly, prefer Giacchino for that movie)
Same here Hybrid, Desplat has a lot of great ideas but his overall scores are just so boring imo. I wonder if I already have listened to an entire album of his :p
Cold? Listen to Lily's theme from Harry Potter! I love Desplat's work.
Kusi we won't agree on that topic, I can listen hours & hours of my fellow countryman Alex and it's colder than the North Pole to me…
