It is with deep sadness that we learned of the passing of the incredibly talented and respected Nick Glennie-Smith on Sunday, August 16. This great composer, who left his mark on the 1990s with soundtracks such as Rock and We Were Soldiers,The man in The Iron Man (…), collaborated extensively with Hans Zimmer—a friend since their youth in England—as well as with Richard Harvey and Mel Wesson. Among other projects, he contributed to the scores for The Lion King, Cool Runnings, Drop Zone, Crimson Tide… and had served as his trusted choir director, arranger, and touring musician since 2014′ Hans Zimmer & Friends london concert.
With his passing, a significant chapter in contemporary film music has come to a close ; his work brought a modern influence while also being guided by the depth of his orchestral arrangements and his compelling themes. Always prioritizing deep inspiration over a desire to take on more projects, he leaves us with a magnificent last soundtrack, Heaven Is for Real, which dates back to 2014.
As a devoted admirer of Hans Zimmer’s music, he devoted his final years to this art form, emerging from the shadows of the composition studio into the spotlight of the greatest stages in Europe and around the world.
We were very proud to have met and known him. Beyond his music, he was a humble and charming man who brought respected expertise and professionalism to his art.
Our thoughts are with his loved ones, especially his wife Jan, whom we are thinking of very deeply at this time.
