It’s interesting to learn that Powell actually would’ve scored the Shrek sequels, but his immature nature essentially lead to him being fired from those. Probably also the reason why he didn’t return to dreamworks until Zimmer brought him back with Kung Fu Panda.
What is this? Where are people getting this “immature nature” from?
Its from a recent video he was part of on Austin Wintory’s YouTube channel. He himself said he was maybe too unprofessional in the way he handled things from the eyes of Dreamworks which is why he was essentially silently fired from sequel Shrek films.
WTF John Powell is a legend
Why would possible fire a composer of HTTYD, KFP, etc…?
…Why would someone possibly fire…*
Errr…. If you read, we’re talking about what happened 20 years ago.
And yes John says himself that basically deciding to do Pluto Nash while doing Shrek pissed off DreamWorks, leading Katzenberg to “bench” John, until Hans brought him back to do Kung Fu Panda…
JP had hits before Shrek…
Hans & Lorne were at some point all over flopping movies and them are okay now…

John & Harry are still close.
They never miss a chance to compete with each other. Back then it was with co-compositions, now it's more with tennis… lol
But they've never lost touch…

Yeah it's gorgeous isn't it? A Harry Gregson-Williams contribution I believe. I wish it was a bit longer though.

I still remember how some people (critics, ugh!) were "complaining" that the Rabin's theme from Deep Blue Sea was very obviously re-used during the dragon sequences in Shrek.
I mean, yes, it kinda reminds me of Rabin's cue, but listening to the tracks now, it's certainly not as bad as some people made it out to be. Overall, I really like what Powell and HGW did with the Shrek score.
Speaking of Shrek, I really hope HGW returns for the upcoming fifth movie. Oh, who am I kidding – Lorne will probably steal this one as well…..lol.
