What was it that happened on this score so that all these RCP folks (including the Z himself) had to jump in and assist the composer?
The Aardman guys wanted Nott on Chicken Run (he even wrote some demos) but were overruled by the suits at Dreamworks who didn’t trust him with a full feature film for whatever reason and preferred to get their known RCP guys from Antz instead. My guess is that Aardman was able to talk them into a compromise for Wallace & Gromit whereby they got Nott back but RCP was still there to help and supervise on the Hollywood side of things.
Google search “Julian Nott’s nice music” and you’ll find an interview where he explains the situation.
What I heard was that Nott’s initial score was not much cohesive as a whole full length-feature. It worked more like short film scores one after the other for the scenes. So RCP’s intervention was to take that score and readapt it and indeed, make it more modern.
Thanks, guys
